eXchangeFun is a community-based website that people could exchange items that they don’t used anymore with their community. It builds upon the trust and closeness in community. Since it is in a neighborhood, exchanging things are easy. People get to see it in real before they decide to buy. And, community members interact as they exchange things!
Compared to existing reuse option, people could remove their posting easily when it is sold; they could upload picture easily; they have information to help them to set price and write item description. The system also helps them to remember their forgotten items. People exchange things within the community. Therefore, logistic is easier. Stuff got destroyed when they are being thrown in harsh weather or into the dumpster. When item is being reused, the life of the item is lengthened. Therefore, the value increases. Forgotten items in the garage, closet or storage become more valuable when they are passed into other hands that are in need of these items.Meaning and value are created through community and treasure hunting experience, through stuff that people do not want anymore.
This is a birdfeeder that my father made during his visit to Bloomington out of the case of the clementine oranges, some woodsticks that he picked up, a yogurt cup. The birdfeeder is so successful that he attracted many birds including nuthatches, woodpeckers and cardinals to visit. He knows how to reuse things very well, coming out of his childhood life. However, it was difficult when we were trying to find materials to build this birdfeeder.
