5. Dream Pipes This figure presents the results of the river fragmentation and flow regulation assessment by Nilsson et al ., (2005). Of 292 of the world’s Large River Systems (LRS), 173 are either strongly or moderately affected by dams; while 119 are considered unaffected. In terms of areas, strongly affected systems constitute the majority (52 per cent or about 4 367 km2) of total LRS catchment areas. The grey color represents potential LRSs in Indonesia and Malaysia that were not assessed due to lack of data.
