6. Aim of Vatican II
♦ _____________________________________________________________________________ ♦
The Church earnestly desires that all the
faithful be led to that full, conscious, and
active participation in liturgical
celebrations called for by the very nature of
the liturgy. Such participation by the
Christian people as “a chosen race, a royal
priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own
people” (1 Pt 2:9; see 2:4-5), is their right
and duty by reason of their baptism.
Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, no. 14.

7. Aim of the Liturgy
♦ _____________________________________________________________________________ ♦
The Church, therefore, earnestly desires
that Christ's faithful …should not be there
as strangers or silent spectators …they
should take part in the sacred action
conscious of what they are doing, with
devotion and full collaboration. They should
…learn also to offer themselves [and] be
drawn day by day into ever more perfect
union with God and with each other, so
that finally God may be all in all.

9. What is Liturgy?
♦ _____________________________________________________________________________ ♦
The word “liturgy” originally meant a
“public work” or a “service in the name
of/on behalf of the people.” In Christian
tradition it means the participation of the
People of God in “the work of God.”
Through the liturgy Christ, our redeemer
and high priest, continues the work of our
redemption in, with, and through his
Church.
Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 1069

10. What is at stake?
♦ _____________________________________________________________________________ ♦
“Faith grows when it is well
expressed in celebration.
Good celebrations can foster
and nourish faith. Poor
celebrations may weaken it.”

2007

11. Liturgy and Devotion
♦ _____________________________________________________________________________ ♦
. . . But these devotions should be so
fashioned that they harmonize with
the liturgical seasons, accord with the
sacred liturgy, are in some way
derived from it, and lead the people to
it, since, in fact, the liturgy, by its very
nature far surpasses any of them.
