The North and South By: Dallas Hull, Brianna Winton, and Dakota Hull
The North and its People. In the north the people moved to the cities to work in factories because of jobs since all there was in the south was cotton fields and slavery. After the potato famine in Ireland most of the Irish moves to the cities by steam boat . Some Germans also move to the north because they wanted to get away from the war In the north you would see factories, trains, and steam boats Once many moved to the north the buildings became tall and they grew in size as well, and so did the cities. Since the was and over population and no sewage well they dumped there waste right out of the homes onto the street. Also in the factories since there was no laws stating that it was illegal In that time children could work in the factories Back then the was no law about the safety of others in these factories either. And so back then since the cities were getter larger so did the increase of money which meant your whole family had to work just to get by on the bills.
Northern jobs Working in the city was hard since many moved north because of all sorts of reasons . Plus since there was no laws and safety rules in factories it was okay for your whole family to work in mills and textile factories. Today you see that there are rules and safety laws. We all know that in the north slavery was not an issue but if you were caught helping an escaped slave you were put in jail
The South and its People In the south many of the people were farmers. There main interest in the South was cotton, because the country demanded more cotton to make more clothes and it was easier to farm in the south. This made a perfect opportunity for farmers. But when the demand for more cotton grew so did the expectation for the farmers. When the farmers got overload they fell behind. And started to use slaves to do the work for them.
History in the South During the era of slavery, cotton was the major cash crop. When Eli Whitney was asked to revolutionize cotton production he invented the cotton gin in 1793. The cotton gin was a machine that removed the seeds from the cotton making it easier for workers to clean. With this a worker could make 50 times more than what he or she would have made in a day. This changed the way that farmers looked at slaves and also added to the demand for more slaves in the south.
Slavery in the South Enslaved African Americans endured brutal conditions , hardship, and misery. They earned little to no money at all, but worked hard at what they do. With little hope of freedom they continued to work hard in hopes of not being separated from there families and sold as a piece of property as some plantation owners took them as. In the south there were few brave people to try to escape these plantations would led to conflict and this made the plantation owners mad.
Escaping Slaves Escaping slaves was an issue considering the fact that these slaves were worth as much as a car nowadays. So when they started to get mad and want there slaves back. There were codes to help the escaping slaves know which houses were safe for them to rest and keep on heading north. The local police usually caught on soon enough so they kept changing them so that they didn’t risk getting caught. When people got into free states they weren’t completely free. To be free and independent they had to go all the way to Canada for the government had established the Fugitive Slave Act. Which meant that if Northerners caught the runaway slaves they would be sent back to there owners and be forced to turn traitor exposing all that had helped them and the secret codes used in the Underground Railroad.
