Task:
Your group has been hired as an expert urban planner to investigate San Antonio’s status on the SA 2020
goals. As field researchers, visit the areas of the community that are addressing these goals. As experts,
create a critical analysis of this plan of action that shows how San Antonio is doing in meeting its goals.
In your analysis, give recommendations on how San Antonio’s strategy can be improved or mirrored in a
neighboring community.
Enduring understandings:
Sustainable development involves investment in community members.
Future growth is dependent on the quality of education and citizen’s health and safety.
The design of cities affects human health, and migration and population patterns.
Student Objectives:
To identify the reasons for setting specific goals for SA2020
To demonstrate the effects of investing in certain community development projects
To internalize why these investments are important for future sustainability
To navigate the transportation system within a city
To effectively communicate with community members about a focused topic

How has San Antonio been addressing the issues within the local community? How do cities successfully
create sustainable development? What areas should cities invest in for future growth?
Content:This project will incorporate multiple concepts learned throughout the disciplines and grades at
the International School of the Americas.

SA2020; analysis of site visits and photographs taken

conference over water; Visiting SA’s new downtown developments; Volunteering at SA’s Haven for Hope;
Interviewing students and administrators at a local charter school; Speaking with a University professor
of Sociology about urban development

potential map of The Pearl Brewery; Onsite Interviews with local community members
Summative: Group-presentation of proposal; Individual-Reflection Questions
