4. Resources for Educators - Journals
• Journal of Research on Technology in Education
The Journal of Research on Technology in Education (JRTE) is one of the journals from ISTE that
provides articles related to the use of technology in the field of education. The journal focuses on
the use of technology in Pre-K through 12th grade education, though there are applications for the
field of education outside of those parameters. The journal covers topics that are applicable to
general education teachers as well as special education teachers, including a recent article about
learning analytics research for students with disabilities.
• Journal of Digital Learning in Teacher Education
The Journal of Digital Learning in Teacher Education (JDLTE) is another journal that is available
through the ISTE. This peer-reviewed journal provides articles and information related to the use of
technology in teacher education. The articles focus on current teachers, as well as those who aspire
to be teachers and teacher educators, as well. One of the journals most read articles discusses
whether teacher educators, those who educate teachers, are competent in digital literacy skills.

Read title...
There are many different reasons. One that's important to me is the professional development opportunities, but also the information about new or changing laws and policies, as I don't normally have the time to stay up to date with all of those things. I also appreciate the availability of being part of a professional community, having a place where I can learn new things and bounce ideas off of people.
Truly, being part of a professional organization provides a number of resources for educators.
One of those resources is the availability of podcasts. I appreciate being able to hear about what things may be working for others or what trends are emerging. I especially appreciate the asynchronous approach to podcasts, so I can listen to them when it is convenient for me.
Another resource that I utilize is access to research journals. ISTE has two specific journals. One is the Journal of Research on Technology in education, which publishes articles related to research in technology in education, (hence the title). The other focuses more on teacher education and the use of digital technologies. As a special educator, ensuring we have empirically based practices is important, so the research journals provide me with peer-reviewed articles and research about effective practices, as well as those that are anecdotally effective but that may be lacking in the evidence.
One other resource for educators available through the ISTE is blogs. The blogs through ISTE cover a number of different topics and provide a less than formal approach to many things that matter to educators. While I do appreciate a good case study or research article, I also appreciate the more personal nature of blogs, as well as the bits of humor that can be added in. Again, as a special educator, there are many things that can be difficult to address, and reading about either someone else's success or failure can be supportive for addressing those difficult situations.
In addition to the normal resources offered, ISTE there is also holds virtual and face-to-face events aimed at bringing educators together. This year, ISTE is holding its ISTE Live 22 event in New Orleans, Louisiana from June 26 - 29. There will be over 800 program sessions, with both face-to-face and virtual events covering a wide range of topics. In looking over the program, there are a number of program sessions that I would be interested in attending.
One of those sessions is "Take Your Data to New Heights with Google Tools". As a significant portion of my job is centered around data collection and analysis, I am always looking for ways to simplify the process or even enhance what we can do with the data.
Another session that I have interest in is a panel discussion called "So You Want to Work for an EdTech Company?" Although I being a teacher, I am also interested in working for an edTech company in the future. Leaders of edTech companies are going to be discussing the types of things that they are looking for when bringing educators over to the edTech world, which is important information to have when trying to transition over.
One last session that I wanted to cover is called "Future Forward, emergent technologies impact in education". We already know that technology keeps advancing and that new technologies continue to emerge. This particular session discusses emergent technologies, as well as ways to utilize them in the classroom.
So, back to the original question, why should teachers join a professional organization. As shown in this presentation, the short answer is simply the plethora of resources available for use.
