How to work with our stereotypes and prejudices
KONYA
Dear participants!
We are happy you will join our meeting. We are waiting for you impatiently! We prepared this reader for
you to give you all important information concerning the whole meeting. We recommend you to read it
carefully!
This info pack will provide you some useful information that you might need before arriving to this
meeting to Turkey, in Konya. We provide you details on travelling arrangements (how to get to the
location), accomodation and some general information about the area where you will stay.
After reading this document if you have more questions or problems don’t hesitate to contact us.
This project is organized by PREVENT civic movement in cooperation with organization Erasmus +
program and its National agency in Turkish Republic.
Agenda outline:
You are going to spend 5 days in Turkey by discussing and experiencing your program and find a way
out with participants from following states: Turkey and some countries. We are going to visit characteristic
places which help you to break stereotypes about Turkey, you will not be tourist here! During the week we
are going to speak about our own project topic and find a way out and experiences, we will discuss the way
how to work with adult and find a way out in working teams or in class and we will play many games and
enjoy a lot of fun of course!!!  At the end, you will try to prove your new skills in real.
Mode of transport of travel:
We need to know your travel expense and exact arrival time as soon as possible. Please, contact us! Hotel
also provide your transfer from airport, bus and train station. Your hotel money will include this, hotel will
able to pick you up from where you will arrive.
Meeting point:
We will be in Konya your project time. We will meet you at the bus station or at airport. At the
meeting point you will get more information about how to get to the place where our course is going to take
place. If someone arrives earlier, please contact us, we'll find an accommodation where you want stay in
Istanbul, Cappadocia, Antalya for you. Also you will find information about all your trip and assistance way
below this e-mail.

How to travel in Konya:
AIPORT: Konya has a small airport but if you want to come to Konya firstly you must arrive in Istanbul.
Istanbul is easy reachable and has a big airport. If you want to go on domestic line you should change airport
for Konya. You will walk inside the Istanbul airport about 20 minutes. You will take Konya’s plane from the
domestic airport. You should find your gate for Konya’s plane. Ask the staff about more information; they
will kindly answer your questions.
TRAIN – there is a train station in Istanbul at other part of Istanbul. You will use subway (Metro) under the
Istanbul airport. You will go Aksaray and you will use sea way for Marmaray then go to Haydarpasa train
station or Pendik for fast train but nowadays Konya have only fast train for Ankara. First you will arrive in
Ankara then go to Konya with fast train. if you will arrive Haydarpasa, you can go to Konya normal, basic
train directly. It is an old train station and it is at the Asia part of Istanbul. Haydarpasa train station is not
near Ataturk airport. It takes two hours from Ataturk airport to Haydarpasa train Station. You need
reservation for Konya trains, you can find normal train and wagon lit train.
BUS – there are two Bus stations. You know Istanbul has two parts; European part and Asian part. Esenler
bus station is in the European part. Harem bus station is in the part of Asia. You will use ESENLER BUS
STATION. You can find subway (METRO) under the Istanbul airport. It is so easy to arrive at Esenler bus
station about 20 minutes by metro and about 1 Euro by metro. What is the available travel agency for
Konya? First; KONTUR travel agency; second OZKAYMAK travel agency; Metro travel agency; Kamil
Koc travel agency. Kontur is a comfortable travel agency for Konya and also there is wireless internet,
hospitality is so good for you. All prices is for Konya 70 Turkish Liras about 25 Euro. If you buy return
ticket, you can ask for a discount in the price.

We have Turkish Liras – Turkish Lira, the current rate to euro is about 2,8 Turkish Liras per one euro.
Normally you cannot pay in euros. On some touristic places you can. There is exchange office at the airport
and in the city center. Normally no commission is charged. Or you can use a cash machine to withdraw
money in our currency.

OUR CITY: KONYA
Iconium" of the Roman times is 263 km from the capital
Ankara. The land is a wide plateau and has been
continuously inhabited even extending back to the 8th
millennium BC.
During the 12th and 13th centuries, the city acted as the
capital of the Seljuk Turks and advanced rapidly to
become a great cultural center. There are many other
interesting places to visit in Konya such as Alaeddin

mosque And palace, Karatay Medresse, The Ince Minareli Medresse, Sircali Medresse, Iplikci Mosque,
Archaeological Museum, the lake of Beysehir and so on. Konya is located in the Middle Anatolian
Region between the north parallels of 36.5-39.5 and in east meridians of 31.5-34.5. In the east Niğde, in
the north Ankara and Eskisehir, in the west Afyon and Isparta and in the south Antalya surround Konya.
Konya is the biggest city in Turkey according to its area which is 40.249 km2. The city is linked by air
with Istanbul and by road with the principal urban centers of Turkey. "Iconium" of the Roman times is
263 km from Ankara
MEVLANA
United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)
are associating the celebrations of anniversaries of internationally
distinguished characters since 1996. 2007 is the 800th anniversary of the
birth of Mevlana Celaleddin-i Belhi-Rumi. UNESCO describes him as
Eminent philosopher and mystical poet of Islam; Rumi advocated tolerance,
reason and access to knowledge through love. His mystical relationship with
Islam produced masterpieces that have marked Islamic culture and Religious
beliefs, well beyond the borders of Turkey. His work and thought remain
universally relevant today. He is the founder of universal humanism and calls
all people.

Cappadocia which is unique in the world and is a miraculous nature wonder is the common name of the field covered by the
provinces of Aksaray, Nevsehir, Nigde, Kayseri and Kirsehir in the Central Anatolian region.
In the upper Myosen period in the Cappadocia region as a result of the vulcanic eruptions occurred in Erciyes, Hasandag
and Gulludag, in the region was formed a large tableland from the vulcanic tufas and together with the erosion of the
Kizilirmak river and wind over ten thousands of years there appeared the chimney rocks which are a wonder of the nature.
In the old Bronze Age the Cappadocia which was the population zone of the Assyrian civilization later has hosted the
Hittite, Frig, Pers, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman civilizations. The first Christians escaped from the persecution of the
Roman Empire in the 2nd century B.C. came to the Cappadocia over the Antakya and Kayseri and they have settled here.
The first Christians finding the underground cities from Cappadocia have been hidden in these underground cities which
gates were made in such way in which they couldn’t be easily observed and they have escaped from the persecution of the
Roman soldiers. Due that they had live in the underground cities for long duration without being able to go out they have
developed these underground cities by making provisions rooms, ventilation chimneys, wine production places, churches,
abbeys, water wells, toilets and meeting rooms.
In the prehistoric periods the first human settlements have begun and the humans have constructed the underground cities in
the volcanic rocks in form of tufa due to protect themselves from the wild animals and they lived for long times in
theseunderground cities. There are so many underground cities on the Cappadocia area of Turkey but the biggest
is Derinkuyu Underground City
In these cities made in form of rooms connected to each others some of the rooms were connected to each other only with
the tunnels tight and permitting passing of just a person. At the access gates of these tunnels there were huge stone rollers
used for closing the tunnels for security reasons.
The first populations of the region of Cappadocia were Hatties, Luvies and Hittites. In the 3000-2000 years B.C. the
Assyrians have established trade colonies in this region. The Cappaddocian tables with cuneiform in Assyrian language
founded at Kanes which are lighting the social and politic life of the period and were in the same time the trade and
economical agreements are the firs written tablets of Anatolia. According to these documents in that period in Anatolia were
founded small local kingdoms non-depending from a central authority. These had in generally in their hands a little area and
were living in peace. The region creating the core of the Hittite Empire later has go under the domination of Phrigia and

Pers. The Pers civilization has called this region Katpatuka and its center was Mazaka. When Datames the Satrab (Starab:
little district administrator at Pers) of Cappadocia has bear arms against the biggest king of Pers, the other Anatolian Satrabs
have been supported him but the revolt has been raided. In 33 b.c. the Big Alexander has captured a big part of Cappadocia.
In 188 B.C. The Cappadocia which entered under the Roman domination has been captured in 100 B.C. by the Mithridatesd
the king of Pontus but in 63 B.C. Pompeius has defeated Mithridates and took again the Cappadocia under the domination
of Rome. In the period of Tiberius the Cappadocia gainded the status of Roman district.
