Highways Expansion
This 60km highway project dictates that a
efficient collaboration is needed to inform and
provoke decisions by all the stakeholders –the
ministry, smaller divisions and municipalities, all
residents that are in the project zone area, and all
patrons and area directors. Developing
consolidated models including quantities, costs,
GIS and other data has helped in coordination
and communication. The BIM models have much
more information, and can be delivered in higher
frequencies. This includes information that
previously only
was delivered in lists.

Flyover on Abule Egba
Junction in Lagos
Design of multilevel junction, modeled in
InfraWorks 360, envisages concrete dual
carriageway flyover to be constructed over T

show in great detail the design in the modeled
environment gaining consensus on the plan by
the municipality.

NP Avenue Bike Lane
Concept Model
The City was looking at building NP Ave
to fit a new Biking initiative for this
street. They wanted an overall
visualization for 2 options so they could
bring it before City Council. Houston
Engineering completed the work over
the period of 2 weeks. The team
derived a surface from the linework
provided by the city and turned it into a
full 3D view of what the corridor will look
like with a finished project. This
intelligent model was used to present
concepts to the city.

Providence 6/10 Connector
The 6/10 Connector is a heavily utilized
transportation system and is currently slated for
repairs for an estimated cost of up to $500
million. Model based workflows allowed the
highway design team, landscape architect and
visualization artists to collaborate on the model
while using multiple software solutions. They
could to immediately recognize potential
conflicts, get real-time access to production
images, and reduced human resources needed
for completion. Project team was able to
compare all the alternatives, with the same level
of detail,
in a 3d space instead of trying to compare them
from 2d paper plans.

The team used BIM process to improve the
communication and collaboration across all
the disciplines and with the client for this
project. With BIM, the position and
dimension of each pipe and underground

owners could now control and manage the

could express the position, dimension and
other properties of pipelines and facilities in
detail. The Revit pipeline model
revolutionizes the pipeline operation and
maintenance process and saves time and
money.

Sabine Street Reconstruction
The conversion from raised curb & gutter to
promenade street style where the drainage is
achieved through surface sheet flow was the
major issue. The desire to achieve the

replacement & roadway improvements
This project consists of Replacement of two
aging bridge structures and reconstruction of
existing two lane roadway to include the addition
of a two-way left turn lane, and turn pocket.
With constraints of right-of-way, existing
features and a desire to avoid too much impact
to surrounding areas, the team decided to
employ BIM workflow to more efficiently run
iterations of horizontal and vertical alignments to
see impacts and adjust design elements quickly,
saving time, money, and avoiding costly
changes during construction. And visualizations
in 3ds Max helped with community awareness.

concrete slab in steel framing. With
Advance Steel and AutoCAD the team was
able to visualize problems with design and
correct before fabrication. steel members
designed
did not allow access to the bolts for
entry and tightening. able to see
this by looking at the model from the
underside of the framing. i would not
be able to do this with
conventional detailing.

contractors. Revit 3D models exist across all
disciplines and project components. Visual
communications helped to improve project
efficiency and promoted cooperative work
resulting in 25% reduction in construction
timelines and estimated 30% cost reduction.

Owner mandated digital planning (reliability,

InterCity commuter rail network connecting all
major cities in eastern Norway. The project has
an expected total cost of approx. 3.9 billion Euros
and will serve 2.9 million commuters annually.
Innovative tools and workflows helped to
establish a trustful model-based workflow for all
stakeholders to meet the owner’s requirements,
but also to go further and be at the very frontier of
merging software, technology and knowledge to
improve project efficiency, quality and
environmental impacts.

showing live, up-to-date information displayed
using Revit’s scheduling and tagging tools the
team views items in 3D ensuring that they can be
understood more quickly and comprehensively,
streamlining the comprehension of risks and their

electrification design tool based in AutoCAD
environment (ELFF system) on Great
Western Main Line and in South Wales
Electrification. ELFF is used by design
subcontractors in 12 countries. Users create
3D models and 4D simulation videos of the
route to be electrified which becomes key in
signal-sighting exercises to determine the
impact on visibility and reaction times of
safety-critical signals from the driver’s
viewpoint.

This is a large-scale rail mass transportation

The pilot project investigated applying and
integrating the science and math of sound
attenuation with design using Revit and
Dynamo. The result of geometrical exercises
and mathematical calculations helped
determine the required increase in the path
length from each source to each receiver
position such that the desired level of
attenuation is achieved (noise reduction up to
the 125 Hz octave band).

This new greenfield airport, replacing the current
one which is at capacity while traffic is increasing,
is designed to be one of the world’s largest. The
design included three runways and all the related
taxiways, platforms and support buildings on the
44 square kilometer project site. Design work
includes all necessary infrastructure like
drainage, lighting and other utilities for a working
airport. The first phase will be capable of
handling 50 million passengers a year with a
future expansion to 6 runways and more than 100
million passengers.

The Ore Export Wharf
Project of Konta, Guinea
This project is the first waterway engineering
application of BIM technology in Africa.
It has two 8000DWT~12000DWT ore export
berths and annual throughput 4000000 tons. BIM
workflows helped improve communication, visual
construction simulation and coordination – all
helping to reduce rework, improve understanding
of design intent, and improve project delivery.
The estimated time savings on the project was 30
design days and 45 construction days.

The Second-line Shiplock Project
of Mengli Hydro-junction
The Second-line Shiplock Project of Mengli
Hydro-junction contains a new 1000t single-line
and single-stage shiplock, of which the grade
level is Ⅲ according to Chinese shiplock
standard. The designed ships are 1000t inland
dry cargo ships and 1000t multi-purpose
container vessels and the net spacing is 220m
length×23m width×4.5m height. The maximum
one-way lock capacity each year is around 16.89
million t (First and second line shiplock in total).
BIM was employed on this project to improve
communication, find issues with the project early,
analyze and understand impacts of the local
program adjustments on the whole project – all
resulting in 15 days savings; and roughly $8m
USD savings.

This project includes the following: 7 container
berths, capable of berthing all kinds of 1000 DWT
– 150,000DWT container vessels; shoreline
length - 1826m, land width: 460m, total area:
736,000 m2; throughput capacity: 20 million ton;
and total investment: approximately CNY 4 billion
Yuan. The team optimized the project with BIM in
design and construction of terminal, basin and
channel and helped to reduce the change of the
original shoreline and submarine topography as
well as the impact of construction on the marine
environment – in all saving 60 days and 10 million
Yuan on the project.

metres of fill; six hectares of naturalistic
bushland; an underground water re-use system;
and preservation and adaptive re-use of a 1900’s
sewer pumping station. BIM helped to foster
confidence during team interactions, standing
alongside full size wall projections of the models
during rapid review and sign off sessions with
senior leaders staying on budget and on time.

more knowledge about 3d Visualization and
how it can be used to inform citizens about
future projects the team created a 3d Model
from the typical 2D plans.

Created a working BIM Infrastructure model of
the City of Bangkok using InfraWorks 360, based
on GIS information, 3D models from various
sources including Autodesk Revit to show to
customers the power of Autodesk InfraWorks for
city planners. Using the new model for analysis,
they are able to approve new buildings,
environmental impact analysis, urban planning
along the Chao Phraya river and the direct impact
to urban projects to the local districts. The team
says this is a highly beneficial model for Bangkok
administration and other government agencies to
approve building projects and for environmental
impact studies.

The housing development located in Boituva is
an allotment involving urban infrastructure
studies, water network , sewage and drainage.
Challenged with making several preliminary
projects in a very short timeframe, the team used
InfraWorks 360 to speed the proposals. The
team needed to show that they could protect and
respect the land next to the project site; with
modeling they were able to show the best
networks (water, drainage and sewage) and
identify potential issues with quick and quality
results.

This project shows how to bring a
stakeholder’s project to life with real
world terrain, location and infrastructure.
It provides real-world scenarios of a
completed project in 3D. To do this, the
team created a vehicle animation along a
path in InfraWorks 360. There are 3
Autodesk software platforms used in the
process, Civil 3D, InfraWorks 360, and
3ds Max. The purpose is to save time
and money because you make less
changes later in the design process.

Hydropower
The station is counter-regulator of Bureiskaya
HPP. This allows to remove operation mode
restrictions of Bureiskaya HPP, eliminate
flooding of downstream villages during winter
and provide additional accumulative flood-
control storage tank for protection against
flooding. The acceleration of development,
approval and issuance of documentation
helped reduce fixes and quality of design with
improvement of time on project by 80% and
overall waste defects reduction of 30%.

Treatment Plant
This is a surface water treatment plant for
Huntsville Utilities initially rated at 24 MGD
but expandable up to 96 MGD. The project
includes raw water pumping (from the
Guntersville dam reservoir) with flocculation,
sedimentation and deep bed filtering. There's
also granular activated carbon filters and
chemical injection along with chlorine contact
into a clearwell for storage and pumping. BIM
helps improve design, collaboration and
stakeholder review – making the project 1 year
ahead of schedule and $15m in savings from
original engineering estimate.

The station is counter-regulator of Bureiskaya
HPP. This allows to remove operation mode
restrictions of Bureiskaya HPP, eliminate
flooding of downstream villages during winter
and provide additional accumulative flood-
control storage tank for protection against
flooding. The acceleration of development,
approval and issuance of documentation
helped reduce fixes and quality of design with
improvement of time on project by 80% and
overall waste defects reduction of 30%.

Shek Wu Hui Sewage Treatment
Works
The Shek Wui Hui Sewage Treatment design &
construction project will be the first for large scale
sewage treatment works in Hong Kong to follow
a BIM approach. AECOM is providing services
for the design and construction of the in-situ
expansion and upgrade. The two-phased project
will double existing treatment capacity and also
upgrade the facility from a secondary level to a
tertiary level treatment plant to improve its
treated sewage effluent (TSE) quality for
reclaimed water use. A primary objective of the
project is to deliver all 3D models and designs
via the owner’s current facility management
system to
help improve maintenance and
future expansion.

Expansion
Stantec’s team is developing the Plant D
expansion with sub consultants supporting the
work – CH2M Hill, AECOM and WPC Solutions.
With all of the complexities of the project and the
large design team, it was critical to employ BIM
workflows over previous tools and processes
that were a combination of 2D and 3D but not
parametric / intelligent components. BIM
workflows helped to improve collaboration and
efficiency of model reviews, design changes,
clash detection, etc. Also visualization helped to
improve reviews with the
client – providing much easier
understanding of the project
than could be done with
2D plan sets.

Project
This plant will supply the running water for Jinxia
District, Dingzi Town, Qiaoyi Town. The design
capacity is 9×104 m3/d (first stage), 20×104 m3/d
(second stage), 30×104 m3/d (third stage). The
team employed a BIM process to make digital
product data accessible downstream in
manufacturing/ assembly of structural systems;
because site limitations made 3D modeling of
existing conditions and preliminary designs
necessary for communication and collaboration;
and
because proposals could be analyzed and
simulations performed quickly. With BIM,
the team anticipates 30% savings in
time across teams and project stages.

Developing consolidated models including quantities, costs, GIS and other data has helped in coordination and communication. The BIM models have much more information, and can be delivered in higher frequencies. This includes information that previously only was delivered in lists. Watch video

CeS COWI d.o.o. | Nigeria Agency | City of Lagos, Nigeria Location | Lagos, Nigeria Concrete Dual Carriageway Flyover on Abule Egba Junction in Lagos Design of multilevel junction, modeled in InfraWorks 360, envisages concrete dual carriageway flyover to be constructed over T junction on the ground level. With strict engineering requirements, the team was able to show in great detail the design in the modeled environment gaining consensus on the plan by the municipality.

They wanted an overall visualization for 2 options so they could bring it before City Council. Houston Engineering completed the work over the period of 2 weeks. The team derived a surface from the linework provided by the city and turned it into a full 3D view of what the corridor will look like with a finished project. This intelligent model was used to present concepts to the city.

Imagery courtesy of VHB VHB | United States Agency | Rhode Island Department of Transportation Location | Providence, RI, US Providence 6/10 Connector The 6/10 Connector is a heavily utilized transportation system and is currently slated for repairs for an estimated cost of up to $500 million. Model based workflows allowed the highway design team, landscape architect and visualization artists to collaborate on the model while using multiple software solutions. They could to immediately recognize potential conflicts, get real-time access to production images, and reduced human resources needed for completion. Project team was able to compare all the alternatives, with the same level of detail, in a 3d space instead of trying to compare them from 2d paper plans. Watch video

China Machinery International Engineering Design & Research | China Location | Hunan, China Changsha Underground Pipeline BIM Management System The team used BIM process to improve the communication and collaboration across all the disciplines and with the client for this project. With BIM, the position and dimension of each pipe and underground facility is explicit. The government and pipe owners could now control and manage the concealed pipes delicately. The BIM model could express the position, dimension and other properties of pipelines and facilities in detail. The desire to achieve the promenade, festival style street required the transition. 3D was the best way to represent design intent helping to shorten review time/understanding and make collaboration design feedback much more efficient. (SSCIP) Location | Chengdu, Sichuan Singapore-Sichuan Hi-tech Innovation Park The project provides BIM counseling service for the first large-scale park construction in Southwest China. The aims of the project are to build a BIM model for such park, to establish infrastructure modeling analysis and collision supervision, and to provide consulting report and service. A BIM process helps improve the coordination process across multiple contractors helping to manage the work associated with the complex structure of underground network of pipes, the road surface, sidewalks, bike lanes, bridges and drainage. Project intersection project between two important avenues of Goiania city (Goias capital) in Brazil. The new BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) line is over Perimetral Av that has many kilometers of extension, linking the south and the north of the city. Intelligent modeling workflows helped improve accuracy and speed between design and visualization and helped improve client and stakeholder communication.

With constraints of right-of-way, existing features and a desire to avoid too much impact to surrounding areas, the team decided to employ BIM workflow to more efficiently run iterations of horizontal and vertical alignments to see impacts and adjust design elements quickly, saving time, money, and avoiding costly changes during construction. Autodesk product used for 3d model and detailing of new steel platforms. One of the unique challenges was that they had to modify install of an access hatch made for concrete slab in steel framing. With Advance Steel and AutoCAD the team was able to visualize problems with design and correct before fabrication. steel members designed did not allow access to the bolts for entry and tightening. able to see this by looking at the model from the underside of the framing. i would not be able to do this with conventional detailing.

The team employed BIM workflows across 3 design firms, 5 BIM consulting firms, and 10 construction contractors. Revit 3D models exist across all disciplines and project components. Visual communications helped to improve project efficiency and promoted cooperative work resulting in 25% reduction in construction timelines and estimated 30% cost reduction. The project has an expected total cost of approx. 3.9 billion Euros and will serve 2.9 million commuters annually. Innovative tools and workflows helped to establish a trustful model-based workflow for all stakeholders to meet the owner’s requirements, but also to go further and be at the very frontier of merging software, technology and knowledge to improve project efficiency, quality and environmental impacts. With automated creation of Designers’ Risk Assessments and hazard notes on drawings showing live, up-to-date information displayed using Revit’s scheduling and tagging tools the team views items in 3D ensuring that they can be understood more quickly and comprehensively, streamlining the comprehension of risks and their implications during design coordination and health and safety workshops. ELFF is used by design subcontractors in 12 countries. Users create 3D models and 4D simulation videos of the route to be electrified which becomes key in signal-sighting exercises to determine the impact on visibility and reaction times of safety-critical signals from the driver’s viewpoint. (Controller) Istanbul Kabatas Mecidiyekoy-Mahmutbey Metroline Civil and Electromechanical Design and Construction Works Imagery courtesy of Alarko Contracting Group Alarko & Prota | Istanbul Location | Istanbul This is a large-scale rail mass transportation system including approximately 22,5 km mainline tunnels and a total of 19 stations of cut-fill, viaduct and borehole types. Also, the project has 1,5 km depot area connection line and depot area. Model-based workflows helped reduce the orientation time for new designers and provide better coordination across all disciplines – architects, structural engineers, civil and survey engineers and MEP. The result of geometrical exercises and mathematical calculations helped determine the required increase in the path length from each source to each receiver position such that the desired level of attenuation is achieved (noise reduction up to the 125 Hz octave band). The design included three runways and all the related taxiways, platforms and support buildings on the 44 square kilometer project site. Design work includes all necessary infrastructure like drainage, lighting and other utilities for a working airport. The first phase will be capable of handling 50 million passengers a year with a future expansion to 6 runways and more than 100 million passengers.

Location | Santiago de Chile Remodelación Aeropuerto Internacional Arturo Merino Benites This project consisted of the remodeling of 170.000 sq meters of the existing terminal and the construction of 175.000sq meters of a new International Terminal. The existing terminal must remain in operation 24/7 with all the levels of services. BIM workflows on this project improved communication and collaboration across entire team (trades) with more transparency on modifications between the trades, improved understanding of the design proposed by architectural team helping speed design and coordination process. CCCC Second Harbor Consultants Co., Ltd. | Africa Agency | Guinea development company Location | Konta, Guinea, Africa The Ore Export Wharf Project of Konta, Guinea This project is the first waterway engineering application of BIM technology in Africa. It has two 8000DWT~12000DWT ore export berths and annual throughput 4000000 tons. BIM workflows helped improve communication, visual construction simulation and coordination – all helping to reduce rework, improve understanding of design intent, and improve project delivery. The estimated time savings on the project was 30 design days and 45 construction days. Watch video

CCCC Second Harbor Consultants Co., Ltd. | China Agency | Guangdong Investment Limited Location | Shaoguan, Guangdong, China The Second-line Shiplock Project of Mengli Hydro-junction The Second-line Shiplock Project of Mengli Hydro-junction contains a new 1000t single-line and single-stage shiplock, of which the grade level is Ⅲ according to Chinese shiplock standard. The designed ships are 1000t inland dry cargo ships and 1000t multi-purpose container vessels and the net spacing is 220m length×23m width×4.5m height. The maximum one-way lock capacity each year is around 16.89 million t (First and second line shiplock in total). BIM was employed on this project to improve communication, find issues with the project early, analyze and understand impacts of the local program adjustments on the whole project – all resulting in 15 days savings; and roughly $8m USD savings. . Location | Gaolan Port, Zhuhai, China Gaolan port - Phase II of container terminal This project includes the following: 7 container berths, capable of berthing all kinds of 1000 DWT – 150,000DWT container vessels; shoreline length - 1826m, land width: 460m, total area: 736,000 m2; throughput capacity: 20 million ton; and total investment: approximately CNY 4 billion Yuan. The team optimized the project with BIM in design and construction of terminal, basin and channel and helped to reduce the change of the original shoreline and submarine topography as well as the impact of construction on the marine environment – in all saving 60 days and 10 million Yuan on the project. BIM helped to foster confidence during team interactions, standing alongside full size wall projections of the models during rapid review and sign off sessions with senior leaders staying on budget and on time. Designed by two local firms Catalyst Architects and HB Engineering the site will include retail shops, eateries, green space, and an amphitheater. In a quest to acquire more knowledge about 3d Visualization and how it can be used to inform citizens about future projects the team created a 3d Model from the typical 2D plans.

Using the new model for analysis, they are able to approve new buildings, environmental impact analysis, urban planning along the Chao Phraya river and the direct impact to urban projects to the local districts. The team says this is a highly beneficial model for Bangkok administration and other government agencies to approve building projects and for environmental impact studies. Watch video

Location | Boituva, São Paulo, Brazil Portal Ville Jardins The housing development located in Boituva is an allotment involving urban infrastructure studies, water network , sewage and drainage. Challenged with making several preliminary projects in a very short timeframe, the team used InfraWorks 360 to speed the proposals. The team needed to show that they could protect and respect the land next to the project site; with modeling they were able to show the best networks (water, drainage and sewage) and identify potential issues with quick and quality results. With this intelligent model they were then able to get approval of new buildings, environmental impact analysis, urban planning along the Chao Phraya river and its direct impact to the local districts. The Bangkok City Model could then be made available to visually assist the Chao Phraya River mega road project currently being studied by Thai Government.

The project includes raw water pumping (from the Guntersville dam reservoir) with flocculation, sedimentation and deep bed filtering. There's also granular activated carbon filters and chemical injection along with chlorine contact into a clearwell for storage and pumping. AECOM is providing services for the design and construction of the in-situ expansion and upgrade. The two-phased project will double existing treatment capacity and also upgrade the facility from a secondary level to a tertiary level treatment plant to improve its treated sewage effluent (TSE) quality for reclaimed water use. A primary objective of the project is to deliver all 3D models and designs via the owner’s current facility management system to help improve maintenance and future expansion. Watch video

With all of the complexities of the project and the large design team, it was critical to employ BIM workflows over previous tools and processes that were a combination of 2D and 3D but not parametric / intelligent components. BIM workflows helped to improve collaboration and efficiency of model reviews, design changes, clash detection, etc. Also visualization helped to improve reviews with the client – providing much easier understanding of the project than could be done with 2D plan sets. The team employed a BIM process to make digital product data accessible downstream in manufacturing/ assembly of structural systems; because site limitations made 3D modeling of existing conditions and preliminary designs necessary for communication and collaboration; and because proposals could be analyzed and simulations performed quickly. With BIM, the team anticipates 30% savings in time across teams and project stages. View video

The previous tools for the project used a combination of 2D and 3D but not parametric / intelligent components. Several engineering firms needed to collaborate on the project design. Limited space on site, new elements tie into the existing site.
