4. INTRODUCTION
These days the library is one of the important centre of resources
for teaching of social science .The aim of education is to train the pupils
to think and from independent judgment and for attaining this aim
student should be provided a variety of material. Library helps in
providing this variety of material to the pupils. Library provides
guidance to teacher in curriculum construction and in the selection of
books. The social science teacher should not follow only the textbook
and he must study some standard books from the library. It will provide
deeper understanding of the subject and a through command of the
same.
Library is quite useful to students. When students read or consult some
books from the library, their doubts become clear . Moreover the study
from the library books acquaint them with new excercises and prepare
them better for the examination. A good library also helps in
inculcating proper attitudes, interests and appreciations in students.

5. LIBRARY FACILITIES IN SCHOOLS
In our schools there are two types of libraries.
a. General school library
b. Departmental library
a. General school library
In most of our schools there is a general school library which contains
books and magazines on all subjects. Then there should be separate
sections for history books. For the teachers there should be good books
on methodology of teaching, contributions of various historians and
important historical personalities. For students there should be books
on recreational activities, well selected textbooks, some reference
books and other historical books.
FUNCTIONS OF SCHOOL LIBRARY
Some of the important functions of school library are as follows;
1. It provides the material for instructions and reading .
2. It stimulates reading to enjoyment and recreation.
3. It teaches the technique of using the library .

6. 4. It provides opportunities to pupils to assume responsibilities .
b. DEPARTMENT LIBRARY
If resources permit a separate library be maintained for social science.
It may be housed in the social science room. The librarian of this library
should classify the books so that students do not face any difficulty in
getting the book issued .The social science teacher himself should
remain in touch with latest books and magazines on the subject and
make additions in the Library . A number of copies of good books
should be purchased.

7. LIBRARY AS A RESOURCE CENTRE
Now - a - days when the learning process has been organized into
different units of activity and experiences, the concept of library has
also changed from that of a depository of books to that of a resource
centre. This resource centre is most extensively used by all the
members of the school family. It not only reached every pupil and
teacher of the school but also to the community in which the school is
situated. It also serves as a store house of various teaching aids such as
charts , maps, diagrams pictures, models etc… In this way library can
provide new depth to the learning experience and the personal lives of
the pupil.

8. IMPORTANTS OF LIBRARY
Library has a key role in the scheme of education. Class room teaching
must be supplemented with the dissemination of knowledge through
library. Different types of books in the library can be quite helpful to
the students in completing the work assigned to them and to tackle all
types of problems emerging from different topics prescribes in their
syllabus .
Class room teaching many a times leaves many gaps and doubts. They
can be removed if students make use of good books available in the
library. The teacher can help the students in the selection of good
books in the library.

9. CONCLUSION
Now a days the library is an important aid for teaching of social science.
Library is not only a source of learning and inspiration of students but
also serves the need of the teachers. The library helps to keep the lamp
of knowledge burning so as to kindle light in the mind of the students
as also the teachers.
The present day the events in teaching of social science demands a
good selection of newspaper and magazines for the school library.
