2. BASIC INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHE AND PSYCHOLOGY
What is psyche?
The human spirit ,soul or mind is called psyche.
What is psychology?
The scientific study of the human mind and its functions, especially those affecting our behavior.
What is architectural/building psychology?
Architectural psychology can be described as a branch of environmental or ecological psychology. This deals with the psychological processes of the
interaction between man and his environment.
Psychology of human is effected by following elements;
Colors and light
texture
Shapes
Colors and light
Color and light are the visible interface between ourselves and our environment. They are part of our everyday life, constantly influencing our feelings, our
well-being and our behavior. Color and light lend shape to a space, enhance or diminish its legibility, facilitate or impede orientation.
The impression given by color and light arises from the constant flow of changing and overlapping scenes, which are in turn the result of a complex
interaction of various factors: material, surface, structure, form; change, motion, duration; characteristics and activities of the observer. The art of design lies
in their combination.
TEXTURE
Texture surface effects human feeling on a very great context. There are a variety of textures like smooth or rough and many other. Some time 2D textures
are designed in such a way that they give a 3D look, which feels more realistic. So these are many different ways to control human feelings and mood.
3. SHAPES
Circular shape:
Tenderness - Love - Friendship - Care - Support - Protection - Affection – Compassion
Squares, rectangles, pyramids:
Stability - Strength - Power - Balance – Reliability
Vertical shapes and lines:
Strength - Masculinity - Power - Aggression - Courage - Brutality - Dominate – Menacing
Horizontal lines:
Tranquility - Feminine - Calm - Rest - Weak - Peaceful - Composed - Silent - Still - Non
menacing
Soft curves:
Rhythm - Movement - Happiness - Pleasure - Generosity – Femininity
Sharp angled lines:
Energy - Lively - Young - Explosive - Violent - Anger - Rapidity - Dynamic - Movement
4. QURTABA CHOWK CLOCK TOWER

5. ANALYSIS OF ELEMENTS ACCORDING ITS PSYCHOLIGICAL
EFFECT ON HUMAN
LOCATION
This monument is located at Qurtaba Chowk, where different roads intersect, (Lytton Road,
Bahawalpur Road, Ferozepur Road). It means thousands of people pass by it and glance at it on daily
basis.
The second important thing, in the context of its location, is that it is visible from a very long distance.
It means, it is not one of those locations where it is difficult to see and observe a monument for not
more than a few seconds. But, it’s location is such that we can watch it for a long time and thus can
easily observe it and even feel it.
The third thing which is very important is that, there are wide roads on its both sides, so, it is not
bounded by high structure which could dominate it.

6. COLOR
As color is an important element which directly catches human eye. A dominant and different color of any
thing makes the thing dominant as well.
So if we analyze the color of tower, it is really very attractive as there is no such other structure which has
used gutka or red bricks. The color scheme of its dome is also very different which catches every single
passing by human’s attraction. Therefore it becomes a dominant structure in its surrounding area.
EDGES OF STRUCTURE
When we observe the overall structure of monument, we see that on its all edges and the elements a border
of white color has been used in a very smooth surface which is an important element to define its shape and
structure from a long distance.
For example, if its border was not made prominent, its over all shape could be merged as this monument is
at the intersection of the roads and therefore people can only observe it from a distance. So, without this
element it would be difficult to guess what type of structure is this and what type of elements are used?
It is an important element which can be used for such type of structure.

7. ANALYSIS OF PROPORTION AND BALANCE
Overall its structure is well balanced and made in a very good proportion.
It gives a great look of a tower and it seems that the base of tower is bearing the load of tower and the
middle part is its shaft and the upper most part is a crown of a column.

8. LIGHT
As light is one of the most important sources to attract human eye, so if we analyze its light sequence,
a yellow flooding light has been used at the base of each elements and a white light is used on the base
of its dome and in clock. White color is also used in the bell area.
Yellow light is helpful in highlighting this monument from its surrounding because all the
surrounding area is covered in white color.
While the white light of its dome, clock , and inner parts highlights its elements from its own
structure.

9. ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENTS
ARCH
Two types of arches are used in this monument; gothic arch and ogee arch which are found in the middle part of this tower; on
the external surface gothic arch is used while in the internal part ogee arch is used. This design is an inspiration from Mughal
architecture.
TERRACOTTA JALI
A terracotta jali is used in the middle part which also depicts an inspiration from Mughal architecture.
MINI COLUMN
Mini column is used on the top part of tower, under dome, which is actually gothic style.
VOLUTES
Volutes are also used as an architectural element, which is also from Greek architecture.
CORNICE
Cornices are also used on the top part between dome and middle part cornices also represent the element of Greek
architecture.
DOME
Dome, used on the top of tower, is depicting Islamic architecture and its color is also inspired from Islamic architecture because
in Islamic architecture this color is very dominant in most of the buildings.
FINISHING MATERIAL
Finishing material, used here is Gutka instead of red bricks, which is also an inspiration from Mughal architecture.
Color used as an outline on different elements and in the interior of middle part is also inspired from Greek architecture.
11. CONSLUSIONS
From overall analysis we can conclude the following elements;
The overall structure is well designed and gives a feeling of classic.
It is in good proportion and balanced very well that easily catches the eye of passing people.
In its architectural style, it is inspired by Mughal , Islamic and Greek architecture which helps to
make it dominant from its surrounding and nearby structures.
Color scheme highlights its existence due to its different color from its surroundings elements.
Surface texture gives a feeling of highness and calmness and approach of different architectural time
periods.
As compare to others structure clock is not as much prominent as it should be the at once dome catch
the eye instead of clock.
