The big advance the algorithms brought about was a shift from calculation on a device to a written representation of the calculation. Arithmetic procedures & computational writing became the hallmark of knowledge during the Renaissance.
Kamii felt that algorithms are actually harmful to children’s mathematical development ( Kamii and Dominick (1989.
Kamii also found that some children were taught algorithms at home and that group “stopped thinking about the numbers.” They focused on the procedure. The No algorithm group got better at decomposing and become better mathematical thinkers. THIS PROCESS TAKES TIME. It does not happen over night but it does happen. LEAP OF FAITH
