This document is an introduction to a special section on exoplanets. It summarizes that astronomers have now detected over 800 exoplanets orbiting other stars, showing that planets are common and diverse. The most commonly observed system is planets 1-3 times the size of Earth, orbiting closer to their star than Earth orbits the Sun. Future efforts will aim to detect and characterize potentially habitable exoplanets in the habitable zone where liquid water could exist. Defining habitability may need to consider various atmospheric and interior compositions beyond just a Earth-like environment. Meanwhile, the Kepler telescope continues finding hundreds of new exoplanet candidates and advancing our understanding of the diversity of alien worlds.
