Metal plating, in simple terms, is a process that provides an outer covering for a metal
substrate aimed at improving its quality and capacity to withstand wear and tear as well as
for corrosion resistance. It is a very useful process that helps various manufacturing
industries including the automobile, electronics, and construction entities.
There are various types of metal plating services available designed for different materials
and purposes. Some of these are the following:
Aluminum anodizing – a plating process that is aimed to increase the thickness of
the natural oxide layer on to the surface of a metal material. This process makes the
plated material to become more durable, with longer life-span. It is also recognized as
process that is safe for the environment.
Copper plating – utilizes copper in the process; it is done by depositing a layer of
copper on to the metal to be plated with the use of electric current. Copper plating has
three basic types of processes based on the complexing system used – alkaline, acid, and
the mildly-alkaline complexed bath.
Gold plating – this process utilizes a thin layer of gold on the surface of the metal to be
plated; this is commonly implemented in electronics, to provide a corrosion-resistant
electrically conductive layer on copper, specifically in electrical connectors.
Zinc plating - this is another popular metal plating process; it utilizes zinc to plate
substrates and it is done by immersing clean steel parts into a zinc salt solution and
applying electric current into it. It provides various benefits such as excellent ductility
and adhesion, highly resistant to corrosion, low stress deposit, etc.
Nickel plating – another way of plating metal materials is through the use of a thin
layer of nickel on to a metal to be plated. Aside from its decorative property, the use of
nickel provides resistance to corrosion as well as for wear and tear.
Electroless nickel plating – this is also known as the self-catalyzing process; this
particular type of plating provides extreme surface adhesion when plated properly. It
also provides excellent abrasion and corrosion resistance, uniform plating (no edge build
up), excellent natural surface lubricity, and it can be applied to various substrates
including aluminum, stainless steel, steel, brass and copper.
