6. Suggestions for giving directions
1. Giving directions is easy when you remember to follow these points.
2. When giving directions you are just giving two sets of instructions.
2.1.“Go To” – you are telling the listener what street to go to or how far to go
2.2. “Then” - you are telling the listener what to do when they get (turn
right/left, go straight , on the left/right, etc.)
3. Use easily identifiable landmarks, instead of the amount of time to get to a place.
(e.g. street lights, stop signs, parks, police station, schools, cinemas, etc.

take a left
take the second (turning) on the left
Right
go right
turn right
it's on the right
take a right
take the second (turning) on the right
Ahead
go ahead
go straight ahead
go straight on
10. - It’s that way.
- It’s this way.
- Take this road
- Go down there…
- Take the first on the left/right
- Turn right at the crossroads
- continue straight ahead for about …..hour until you see….
- keep going for another.
- Go around the corner…
- Walk down the corridor
- It’s on your right/left.
- Take the bus/train/tuk-tuk…
- Walk down ….. street/road/avenue..
- Get on bus number….and get off at the …. bus stop.
- You will see …. on your left/right.
14. Conversation 1
A: Where is the public library, please?
B: It is in Broad Street, near the Town Hall.
A: How do I get there?
B: Well, you could walk. But it’s better to take bus number 14. It will take you straight there.
A: Thanks a lot.
Conversation 2
A: Excuse me, could you tell me where the AA Cinema is , please?
B: Let me see. Oh yes, of course, I know. It’s in Lincoln Square, opposite
the Asia Hotel.
A: Is that near here?
B: Oh yes, it’s just a few minutes walk. Turn left at the traffic lights and
you’ll see it.
A: Thank you very much.
Conversation 3
A: Excuse me, please. Could you tell me where the Speedy Car-Hire
office is?
B: I’m sorry. I have no idea
A: I think it’s somewhere off City Avenue. Do you know where that is?
B: I’m afraid I don’t. I’d never been here before.
