Education
Robert Geneid is an Australian businessman and entrepreneur. He was born in Sydney, Australia in the
fifties. He decided to enter into the University of New South Wales engineering course after his
secondary education. University of New South Wales is ranked highly in Australia especially with their

engineering program. After the completion of the 4 year course, Robert Geneid graduated with his
Bachelor of Engineering.
After a few years as an engineer, Robert decided that he needed to return to the University of New
South Wales to further his studies. On his return to his alma mater, he chose to study law instead of
his previous specialization. By 1985, he had earned his degree, graduating with a Bachelor of Law.

Law Career
Robert Geneid began his climb on the legal ladder at Freehills, Hollingdale and Page. The firm is one of
the Big Six Australian law firms at the time. They specialized in commercial law with a focus on the
Asia Pacific region. Robert joined them as a solicitor and was engaged in major construction projects
like the Channel Island Power Station and the Sydney Harbour Tunnel.
After he left Freehills, Robert joined up with another Big Six Australian law firm, Mallesons Stephen
Jacques. Here, Robert was made a partner at the firm. He was also given responsibility in handling
their South East Asian projects and construction portfolios.
Robert Geneid has also been involved in various other projects that needed his legal skills. He was
engaged in the development of Jakarta’s first commercial tv station. He was assigned as the legal
advisor for a gas pipeline joint venture project in West Malaysia.

Tourism
Robert Geneid has also made a name for himself in the field of tourism. He has built two flourishing
international hotels in Sarawak, Malaysia. The Miri Marriot Resort is one of his tourism ventures and is
part of the flagship brand for Marriott International. This is still the only five star hotel in Miri, Sarawak.
The Royal Mulu Resort is the second part of his tourism venture. This resort has 188 rooms all
equipped with modern conveniences. The resort is also situated just next to the main attraction of the
region, the Gunung Mulu National Park. This park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is managed by
another of Robert’s companies in conjuction with the state Forestry Department.
Robert is also contributing to the industry by serving on the board of directors at a few of Malaysia’s
tourism bodies. He is a board member of Tourism Malaysia, Malaysia’s tourism promotion board under
the Ministry of Tourism. He is also a serving board member at both the Malaysian Convention and
Exhibition Bureau and the Sarawak Convention Bureau.

Conservation
Efforts
Robert Geneid is also involved in the conservation of the culture of the people of Borneo. He has been
fascinated by their arts and crafts for a long time. He had witnessed an inevitable decrease in interest
especially from the younger generation. Due to this, he helped start the Borneo Culture Conservation
Foundation whose mission is to protect the heritage items of the region for generations to come.
