TWO TRAVELING ANGELS

Two traveling angels stopped to spend the night in the home of a wealthy family. The
family was rude and refused to let the angels stay in the mansion's guest room. Instead
the angels were given a small space in the cold basement. As they made their bed on
the hard floor, the older angel saw a hole in the wall and repaired it. When the
younger angel asked why, the older angel replied, "Things aren't always what they
seem."
The next night the pair came to rest at the house of a very poor, but very hospitable
farmer and his wife. After sharing what little food they had the couple let the angels
sleep in their bed where they could have a good night's rest. When the sun came up the
next morning the angels found the farmer and his wife in tears. Their only cow, whose
milk had been their sole income, lay dead in the field. The younger angel was
infuriated and asked the older angel how could you have let this happen? The first man
had everything, yet you helped him, she accused. The second family had little but was
willing to share everything, and you let the cow die.
"Things aren't always what they seem," the older angel replied. "When we stayed in
the basement of the mansion, I noticed there was gold stored in that hole in the wall.
Since the owner was so obsessed with greed and unwilling to share his good fortune, I
sealed the wall so he wouldn't find it."
"Then last night as we slept in the farmer’s bed, the angel of death came for his wife. I
gave him the cow instead.
Things aren't always what they seem." Sometimes that is exactly what happens when
things don't turn out the way they should. If you have faith, you just need to trust that
every out come is always to your advantage. You just might not know it until some
time later...
Some people come into our lives and quickly go...
Some people (become friends) and stay a while... leaving beautiful footprints on
our hearts...

Yesterday is history.
Tomorrow a mystery.
Today is a gift.
That's why it's called the present!
I think this is special...live and savor every moment...
This is not a dress rehearsal!

SAND & STONE

A story tells that two friends were walking through the desert. During some point of
the journey they had an argument, and one friend slapped the other one in the face.
The one who got slapped was hurt, but without saying anything, wrote in the sand
"TODAY MY BEST FRIEND SLAPPED ME IN THE FACE."

They kept on walking until they found an oasis, where they decided to take a bath. The
one who had been slapped got stuck in the mire and started drowning, but the friend
saved him. After he recovered from the near drowning, he wrote on a stone "TODAY
MY BEST FRIEND SAVED MY LIFE."

The friend who had slapped and saved his best friend asked him, "After I hurt you, you
wrote in the sand and now, you write on a stone, why?" The other friend replied
"When someone hurts us we should write it down in sand where winds of Forgiveness

                                             1
can erase it away. But, when someone does something good for us, we must engrave it
in stone where no wind can ever erase it."

LEARN TO WRITE YOUR HURTS IN THE SAND AND TO CARVE YOUR BENEFITS
IN STONE.

A Special Person - They say it takes a minute to find a special person, an hour to
appreciate them, a day to love them, but then an entire life to forget them. Take the
time to live!!!

FEELINGS AND LOVE.....

Once upon a time, there was an island where all the feelings lived Happiness, Sadness,
Knowledge, and all of the others, including Love.
One day it was announced to the feelings that the island would sink, so all prepared
their boats and left. Love wanted to persevere until the last possible moment. When the
island was almost sinking,
Love decided to ask for help. Richness was passing by Love in a grand boat. Love said,
"Richness, can you take me with you? “Richness answered, "No, I can't. There is a lot of
gold and silver in my boat. There is no place here for you."
Love decided to ask Vanity who was also passing by in a beautiful vessel, "Vanity,
please help me!" "I can't help you Love. You are all wet and might damage my boat."
Vanity answered.
Sadness was close by so Love asked for help, "Sadness let me go with you." "Oh....Love,
I am so sad that I need to be by myself!"
Happiness passed by Love too, but he was so happy that she did not even hear when
Love called her!
Suddenly, there was a voice, "Come Love, I will take you." It was an elder.
Love felt so blessed and overjoyed that he even forgot to ask the elder his name. When
they arrived at dry land, the elder went his own way. Love realizing how much he
owed the elder and asked Knowledge, another elder, "Who helped me?" "It was Time,"
Knowledge answered. "Time?" asked Love. "But why did Time help me?" Knowledge
smiled with deep wisdom and answered, "Because, only Time is capable of
understanding how great Love is."

MAKE YOUR CHOICE

A woman came out of her house and saw 3 old men with long white beards sitting in
her front yard. She did not recognize them. She said "I don't think I know you, but you
must be hungry. Please come in and have something to eat." "Is the man of the house
home?” they asked. "No", she said. "He's out." "Then we cannot come in", they replied.
In the evening when her husband came home, she told him what had happened.
"Go tell them I am home and invite them in!" The woman went out and invited the men
in.
"We do not go into a House together," they replied.
"Why is that?" she wanted to know. One of the old men explained
"His name is Wealth," he said pointing to one of his friends, and said pointing to
another one,
"He is Success, and I am Love."
Then he added, "Now go in and discuss with your husband which one of us you want in
your home."

                                            2
The woman went in and told her husband what was said. Her husband was overjoyed.
"How nice!!” he said. "Since that is the case, let us invite Wealth. Let him come and fill
our home with wealth!"
His wife disagreed. "My dear, why don't we invite Success?"
Their daughter-in-law was listening from the other corner of the house. She jumped in
with her own suggestion
"Would it not be better to invite Love? Our home will then be filled with love!"
"Let us heed our daughter-in-law's advice," the husband said to his wife.
"Go out and invite Love to be our guest."
The woman went out and asked the 3 old men, "Which one of you is Love? Please come
in and be our guest."
Love got up and started walking toward the house. The other 2 also got up and
followed him. Surprised, the lady asked Wealth and Success
"I only invited Love, Why are you coming in?"
The old men replied together "If you had invited Wealth or Success, the other two of us
would've stayed out, but since you invited Love, wherever He goes, we go with him.
Wherever there is Love, there is also Wealth and Success!!!!!!" OUR WISH FOR YOU...
Where there is pain, we wish you peace and mercy. Where there is self-doubting, we
wish you a renewed confidence in Your Ability to work through them. Where there is
tiredness, or exhaustion, we wish you understanding, patience, and renewed strength.
Where there is fear, we wish you love, and courage.

"WE ARE WHAT WE BELIEVE WE ARE"

A well known speaker started off his seminar by holding up a $ 500 Note. In the room
of 200, he asked, "who would like this $ 500?' Hands started going up. He said, "I am
going to give this note to one of you, but first let me do this.'

 He proceeded to crumple the note up. He then asked, 'who still wants it?' Still, the
hands were up in the air. 'Well,' he replied. 'What if I do this’? And the dropped it on the
ground and started to grind it into the floor with his shoe. He picked it up now, all
crumpled and dirty.

'Now who still wants it?' Still the hands went into the air. "My friends, you all learned
a very valuable lesson. No matter what I did to the money, you still wanted it because
it did not decrease in value. It was still worth $ 500"
 Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crumpled and ground into the dirt by the
decisions we make and the circumstances that come our way. We feel as though we
are worthless.

But no matter what has happened or what will happen, you will never Loose your
value.
"Never let yesterday's disappointments overshadow tomorrow's dreams". "We are
what we believe we are".

WHEN GOD MADE MOTHERS

By the time God made mothers, he was into his sixth day of working overtime.
An Angel appeared and said "Why are you spending so much time on this one?"

In addition, God answered and said, “Have you seen the spec sheet on her?

                                             3
She has to be completely washable, but not plastic, have 200 movable parts, all
replaceable, run on black coffee and leftovers, have a lap that can hold three children
at one time and that disappear when she stands up, have a kiss that can cure anything
from a scraped knee to a broken heart, and have six pairs of hands." The Angel was
astounded at the requirements for this one. "Six pairs of hands! No Way!" said the
Angel.
God replied, "Oh, it's not the hands that are the problem, it’s the three pairs of eyes that
mothers must have!" And that's just on the standard model?" the Angel asked.
God nodded in agreement, "Yep, one pair of eyes are to see through the closed door as
she asks her children what they are doing, even though she already knows. Another
pair in the back of her head is to see what she needs to know even though no one thinks
she can. And the third pair is here in the front of her head. They are for looking at an
errant child and saying that she understands and loves him or her without even saying
a single word."

The Angel tried to stop God. "This is too much work for one day. Wait until tomorrow
to finish...”

"But I can't," God protested. "I am so close to finishing this creation that is so close to
my own heart. She already heals herself when she is sick and can feed a family of six
on a pound of hamburger and can get a nine year old to stand in the shower!" The
Angel moved closer and touched the woman. "But you have made her so soft, Lord."
"She is soft", the Lord agreed, "but I have also made her tough. You have no idea what
she can endure or accomplish." "Will she be able to think?” asked the Angel.

The Lord replied, "Not only will she be able to think, she will be able to reason, and
negotiate." The Angel then noticed something, reached out, and touched the woman's
cheek. "Oops, it looks like you have a leak with this model. I told you that you were
trying to put too much into this one."

"That's not a leak", God said, "That's a tear!" "What's the tear for?" the Angel asked.
God said, "The tear is her way of expressing her joy, her sorrow, her disappointment,
her pain, her loneliness, her grief, and her pride." The Angel was impressed. "You are a
genius, Lord. You thought of everything. WOMEN are truly amazing!"

CRACKED POT

A water bearer in India had two large pots, each hung on the end of a pole which he
carried across his neck. One of the pots was perfectly made and never leaked. The
other pot had a crack in it and by the time the water bearer reached his master's house
it had leaked much of its water and was only half full.
For a full two years this went on daily, with the bearer delivering only one and a half
pots full of water to his master's house. Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its
accomplishments. But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection, and
miserable that it was able to accomplish only half of what it had been made to do.
After two years of what it perceived to be a bitter failure, it spoke to the water bearer
one day by the stream. "I am ashamed of myself, and I want to apologize to you."
"Why?" asked the bearer. "What are you ashamed of?" "I have been able, for these past
two years, to deliver only half my load because this crack in my side causes water to
leak out all the way back to your master's house. Because of my flaws, you have to do
all of this work, and you don't get full value from your efforts," the pot said.

                                             4
The water bearer felt sorry for the old cracked pot, and in his compassion he said, "As
we return to the master's house, I want you to notice the beautiful flowers along the
path."
Indeed, as they went up the hill, the old cracked pot took notice of the sun warming the
beautiful wild flowers on the side of the path, and this cheered it some. But at the end of
the trail, it still felt bad because it had leaked out half its load, and so again the pot
apologized to the bearer for its failure.
The bearer said to the pot, "Did you notice that there were flowers only on your side of
your path, but not on the other pot's side? That's because I have always known about
your flaw, and I took advantage of it. I planted flower seeds on your side of the path,
and every day while we walk back from the stream, you've watered them. For two
years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate my master's table.
Without you being just the way you are, he would not have this beauty to grace his
house."
Each of us has our own unique flaws. We're all cracked pots. But if we will allow it,
God will use our flaws to grace his table. In God's great economy, nothing goes to
waste. Don't be afraid of your flaws. Acknowledge them, and you too can be the cause
of beauty. Know that in our weakness we find our strength.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS

A few years ago, at the Seattle Special Olympics, nine contestants, all physically or
mentally disabled, assembled at the starting line for the 100-yard dash.

At the gun, they all started out, not exactly in a dash, but a relish to run the race to the
finish and win. All, that is, except one little boy who stumbled on the asphalt, tumbled
over a couple of times, and began to cry.

The other eight heard the boy cry. They slowed down and looked back. Then they all
turned around and went back ... every one of them.

One girl with Down syndrome bent down and kissed him and said, "This will make it
better." Then all nine linked arms and walked together to the finish line. Everyone in
the stadium stood, and the cheering went on for several minutes.

And they call some of these people "retarded"......

People who were there are still telling the story. Why? Because deep down we know
this one thing what matters in this life is more than winning for ourselves. What
matters in this life is helping others win, even if it means slowing down and changing
our course.

"A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle"

TREASURE WHAT YOU HAVE

Sometimes we spend time asking who is responsible or who to blame, whether in a
relationship, in a job or with the people we know. We miss out some warmth in human
relationship to give each other support. Treasure what you have. Just a little story that
can change the way we generally look at...

                                             5
A boy was born to a couple after eleven years of marriage. They were a loving couple
and the boy was the apple of their eyes. When the boy was around two years old, one
morning the husband saw a medicine bottle open. He was late for work so he asked the
wife to cap the bottle and keep it in the cupboard. The mother, preoccupied in the
kitchen totally forgot the matter. The boy playfully went to the medicine bottle and,
fascinated with its color, drank it all. It happened to be a poisonous medicine meant
for adults in small dosages. When the child showed signs of poisoning the mother took
him to the hospital, where he died. The mother was stunned. She was terrified how to
face her husband. When the distraught father came to the hospital and saw the dead
child, he looked at his wife and uttered just four words.

QUESTIONS

1. What were the four words?

2. What is the implication of this story?

Check with the answers only after you have tried to come up with your own. Please
scroll down.

ANSWER

The husband just said “I Love You Darling “. The husband's totally unexpected reaction
is proactive behavior. He is indeed a genius in human relationships. The child is dead.
He can never be brought back to life. There is no point in finding fault with the mother.

She had also lost her only child. What she needed at that moment was consolation and
sympathy from the husband. That is what he gave her. If ever everyone can look at life
with this kind of perspective, there would be much fewer problems in the world.

To be happy with a man you must understand him a lot and love him a little. To be
happy with a woman you must understand her a lot and love her with all your heart.

"A journey of a thousand miles, begins but with a single step.”Take off all your envies,
jealousies, unforgiveness, selfishness, and fears AND you will find things are actually
not as difficult as you think."

There are many beautiful, charming and wonderful men and women here on earth;
it's just a matter of who you get to meet along the way and who you choose to end up
with for the rest of your life.

"Love has its own time, season and reason. You can't ask for it to stay. You can only
embrace it when it comes and be glad that for a moment in your life, it was yours”

CHANGE YOUR STRATEGY

One day, there was a blind man sitting on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet
and a sign that read "I am blind, please help".

A creative publicist was walking by him and stopped to observe he only had a few
coins in his hat, he dropped a few more coins in his hat and without asking for his
permission took the sign, turned it around, and wrote another announcement.

                                            6
He placed the sign by his feet and left. That afternoon the creative publicist returned by
the blind man and noticed that his hat was full of bills and coins. The blind man
recognized his footsteps and asked if it was him who had re-written his sign and he
wanted to know what did he write on it?

The publicist responded "Nothing that was not true, I just rewrote your sign
differently". He smiled and went on his way.

The blind man never knew but his new sign read “TODAY IS SPRING AND I CANNOT
SEE IT".

Change your strategy when something does not go your way and you'll see it will
probably be for the best. Have faith that every change is best for our lives.

"STRESS MANAGEMENT".

A lecturer was giving a lecture to his student on”stress management". He raised a
glass of water and asked the audience, "How heavy do you think this glass of water
is?"
The students' answers ranged from 20g to 500gm.
It does not matter on the absolute weight. It depends on how long you hold it.
If I hold it for a minute, it is OK.
If I hold it for an hour, I will have an ache in my right arm.
If I hold it for a day, you will have to call an ambulance.
It is the exact same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes."

"If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, we will not be able to carry on,
the burden becoming increasingly heavier."
"What you have to do is to put the glass down, rest for a while before holding it up
again."
We have to put down the burden periodically, so that we can be refreshed and are able
to carry on.
So before you return home from work tonight, put down the burden of work.
Don't carry it back home. You can pick it up tomorrow. Whatever burdens you are
having now on your shoulders, let it down for a moment if you can.
Pick it up again later when you have rested... Rest and relax.

Life is short, enjoy it!!

PRAISE THE LORD

There was a little old lady who would come out on the steps of her front porch every
morning, raise her arms to the sky and shout, "Praise the Lord."

One day, an atheist moved into the house next door. Over time he became irritated
with the little old lady, so every morning he would step out onto his front porch and
yell after her, "There is no Lord."

Time passes, with the two of them carrying on this way every day.

                                            7
One morning, in the middle of winter, the little old lady stepped onto her front porch
and shouted, "Praise the Lord! Lord, I have no food and I am starving. Please provide
for me, oh Lord."

The next morning she stepped onto her porch and there were two huge bags of
groceries sitting there.

"Praise the Lord," she cried out. "He has provided groceries for me."

The atheist jumped out of the hedges and shouted, "There is no Lord; I bought those
groceries."

The little old lady threw her arms into the air and shouted, Praise the Lord; He has
provided me with groceries, and he made the devil pay for them."

POWER OF FAITH

The fields were parched and brown from lack of rain, and the crops lay wilting from
thirst. People were anxious and irritable as they searched the sky for any sign of relief.
Days turned into arid weeks. No rain came. The ministers of the local churches called
for an hour of prayer in the town square the following Saturday. They requested that
everyone bring an object of faith for inspiration.
At high noon on the appointed Saturday the townspeople turned out en-masse
filling the square with anxious faces and hopeful hearts. The ministers were touched to
see the variety of objects clutched in prayerful hands -holy books, crosses, rosaries.
When the hour ended, as if on magical command, a soft rain began to fall.
Cheers swept the crowd as they held their treasured objects high in gratitude and
praise. From the middle of the crowd one faith symbol seemed to overshadow all the
others a small nine-year-old child had brought an umbrella.
When you do something in life, have complete faith that you will definitely succeed.
Never do anything half-mindedly. Faith is a great foundation to build your life.

VALUE OF GOODNESS...

A young man was getting ready to graduate from college. For many months he had
admired a beautiful sports car in a dealer's showroom, and knowing his father could
well afford it, he told him that was all he wanted.
As Graduation Day approached, the young man awaited signs that his father had
purchased the car. Finally, on the morning of his graduation, his father called him into
his private study. His father told him how proud he was to have such a fine son, and
told him how much he loved him. He handed his son a beautiful wrapped gift box.
Curious, but somewhat disappointed, the young man opened the box and found a
lovely, leather-bound Bible, with the young man's name embossed in gold. Angrily, he
raised his voice to his father and said, "With all your money you give me a Bible?" He
then stormed out of the house, leaving the Bible.
Many years passed and the young man was very successful in business. He had a
beautiful home and a wonderful family, but realizing his father was very old, he
thought perhaps he should go to see him. He had not seen him since that graduation
day. Before he could make the arrangements, he received a telegram telling him his
father had passed away, and willed all of his possessions to his son. He needed to come
home immediately and take care of things.

                                            8
When he arrived at his father's house, sudden sadness and regret filled his heart. He
began to search through his father's important papers and saw the still new Bible, just
as he had left it years ago. With tears, he opened the Bible and began to turn the pages.
As he was reading, a car key dropped from the back of the Bible. It had a tag with the
dealer's name, the same dealer who had the sports car he had desired. On the tag was
the date of his graduation, and the words….."PAID IN FULL".

How many times do we miss blessings because they are not packaged as we expected?
Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; but remember that what
you now have was once among the things you only hoped for.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sometimes we don't realize the good fortune we have or we could have because we
expect "the packaging" to be different.
What may appear as bad fortune may in fact be the door that is just waiting to be
opened.
ALWAYS STAY… POSITIVE!
Once upon a time there was a bunch of baby frogs....… participating in a
competition.The target was to get to the top of a high tower.
A crowd of people had gathered to observe the race and encourage the participants.....
The start shot rang out.......
Quite honestly, None of the onlookers believed that the baby frogs could actually
accomplish getting to the top of the tower.
Words like "Åh, it’s too difficult!!! They’ll never reach the top."
Or "Not a chance... the tower is too high!"
One by one some of the baby frogs fell off…... Except those who fastly climbed higher
and higher.. The crowd kept on yelling "It’s too difficult. Nobody is going to make it!"
More baby frogs became tired and gave up... ...But one kept going higher and
higher..... He was not about giving up!
At the end everybody had given up, except the one determined to reach the top! All the
other participants naturally wanted to know how he had managed to do what none of
thm others had been able to do!
One competitor asked thm winner, what was his secret?
The truth was....... The winner was deaf!!!!
The lesson to be learned - Don’t ever listen to people who are negative and
pessimistic... … they will deprive you of your loveliest dreams and wishes you carry in
your heart! Always be aware of the power of words, as everyting you hear and read
will interfere with your actions!
Therefore - Always stay… POSITIVE!
And most of all Turn a deaf ear when people tell you, that you cannot achieve your
dreams!
                                               9
Always believe - You can make it!
GLASS OF MILK!
I always imagine kindness returned like this a glass of milk
One day, a poor boy who was selling goods from door to door to pay his way through
school, found he had only one thin dime left, and he was hungry.
He decided he would ask for a meal at the next house. However, he lost his nerve when
a lovely young woman opened the door. Instead of a meal he asked for a drink of
water.
She thought he looked hungry so brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly,
and then asked, "How much do I owe you?"
"You don't owe me anything," she replied. "Mother has taught us never to accept pay
for a kindness."
He said....."Then I thank you from my heart."
Year's later that young woman became critically ill. The local doctors were baffled.
They finally sent her to the big city, where they called in specialists to study her rare
disease.
Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the
town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes.
Immediately he rose and went down the hall of the hospital to her room. Dressed in his
doctor's gown he went in to see her. He recognized her at once.
He went back to the consultation room determined to do his best to save her life. From
that day he gave special attention to the case.
After a long struggle, the battle was won.
Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval. He
looked at it, and then wrote something on the edge and the bill was sent to her room.
She feared to open it, for she was sure it would take the rest of her life to pay for it all.
Finally she looked, and something caught her attention on the side of the bill. She read
these words.....
"Paid in full with one glass of milk"
Signed, Dr. Howard Kelly.
Tears of joy flooded her eyes as her happy heart prayed "Thank You, God that your
love has spread abroad through human hearts and hands."
"To fix a broken life, use the tools of the heart."
MONKEY & THE HATSELLER.
There was once a hat-seller who passed by a forest decided to take a nap under one of
the trees, so he left his whole basket of hats by the side. A few hours later, he woke up
by some sounds. The next thing he realised was that all his hats were gone. He heard
some monkeys on the tree and so he looked up. To his surprise, the tree was full of
monkeys and they had taken all his hats. An idea came to him, he took his hat and
throws it on the floor and the monkeys do that too. So he finally managed to get all his
hats back.
                                                10
Fifty years later, his grandson, Jack, also became a hat -seller and had heard this
monkey story from his grandfather. One day, just like his grandfather, he passed by
the same forest, it was very hot, and he took a nap under the same tree and left the
hats on the floor. He woke up and realised that all his hats were one. He looked up and
realised that the monkeys had taken all the hats. He remembered his grand father's
words, started scratching his head and the monkeys follow. He took down his hat and
fanned himself and again the monkeys followed.
 Now, very convinced of his grandfather's idea, JACK threw his hat on the floor but to
his surprise, the monkeys still held on to all the hats.
 Then one monkey climbed down the tree, grabbed the hat on the floor, gave him a slap
and said “You think only you have a grandfather?
NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE
This is a real story that happened between the customer of General Motors and its
Customer-Care Executive.
A complaint was received by the Pontiac Division of General Motors "This is the second
time I have written to you, and I don't blame you for not answering me,
 because I sounded crazy, but it is a fact that we have a tradition in our family of Ice-
Cream for dessert after dinner each night.
But the kind of ice cream varies so, every night, after we’ve eaten the whole family
votes on which kind of ice cream we should have and I drive down to the store to get it.
It's also a fact that I recently purchased a new Pontiac and since then my trips to the
store have created a problem.
You see, every time I buy a vanilla ice-cream, when I start back from the store my car
won't start. If I get any other kind of ice cream, the car starts just fine. I want you to
know I'm serious about this! ; question, no matter how silly it sounds "What is there
about a Pontiac that makes it not start when I get vanilla ice cream, and easy to start
whenever I get any other kind?"
The Pontiac President was understandably skeptical about the letter, but sent an
Engineer to check it out anyway. The latter was surprised to be greeted by a
successful, obviously well educated man in a fine neighborhood. He had arranged to
meet the man just after dinnertime, so the two hopped into the car and drove to the ice
cream store. It was vanilla ice cream that night and, sure enough, after they came
back to the car, it wouldn't start.
The Engineer returned for three more nights. The first night, they got chocolate. The
car started. The second night, he got strawberry. The car started. The third night he
ordered vanilla. The car failed to start.
Now the Engineer, being a logical man, refused to believe that this man's car was
allergic to vanilla ice cream. He arranged, therefore, to continue his visits for as long
as it took to solve the problem.
And toward this end he began to take notes he jotted down all sorts of data time of day,
type of gas uses, time to drive back and forth etc. In a short time, he had a clue the man
                                           11
took less time to buy vanilla than any other flavor. Why? The answer was in the layout
of the store. Vanilla, being the most popular flavor, was in a separate case at the front
of the store for quick pickup.
All the other flavors were kept in the back of the store at a different counter where it
took considerably longer to check out the flavor. Now, the question for the Engineer
was why the car wouldn't start when it took less time. Once time became problem -
not the vanilla ice cream Eureka!!!!
The engineer quickly came up with the answer”vapour lock". It was happening every
night; but the extra time taken to get the other flavors allowed the engine to cool down
sufficiently to start. When the man got vanilla, the engine was still too hot for
the vapour lock to dissipate.
Remember, Even crazy looking problems are sometimes real and all problems seem to
be simple only when we find the solution with a cool thinking.
Don't just say its "IMPOSSIBLE" without putting a sincere effort...
Observe the word "IMPOSSIBLE" carefully... Looking       closer you will see, "I'M
POSSIBLE"... What really matters is your attitude and your perception.
NEVER GIVE-UP
One day a farmer's donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours
as the farmer tried to figure out what to do.
Finally he decided the animal was old and the well needed to be covered up anyway; it
just wasn't worth it to retrieve the donkey.
He invited all his neighbors to come over and help him. They all grabbed a shovel and
began to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the donkey realised what was happening
and cried horribly. Then, to everyone's amazement, he quieted down. A few shovel
loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well and was astonished at what he
saw. With every shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something
amazing. He would shake it off and take a step up. As the farmer's neighbours
continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up.
Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well
and trotted off!
THE MORAL
Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. The trick to getting out of the well is
to shake it off and take a step up. Each of our troubles is a stepping-stone. We can get
out of the deepest wells just by not stopping, never giving up! Shake it off and take a
step up!
HAIR AND THE TORTOISE
Everyone knows the story of Hare & Tortoise, isn’t it? But here is a Lesson for Survival
Here is the story of Hare and the Tortoise revisited In Today's Context
                                              12
A hare and a tortoise live in Ahmedabad. They are good friends and like all good
friends, sometimes have a dig at each other. One day, in a light mood the
hare ridiculed the tortoise for his slow pace. The tortoise reacted by challenging the
hare for a race between Paldi to Navarangpura....and you all know what happens in
this                                                                          story.....
Lesson Learnt "Slow and steady wins the race." However, the story does not end
here.....
The hare goes home and soon understands that complacency and overconfidence were
the reasons of his defeat. He vows not to repeat the mistake again.
He then invites the tortoise for another race. The tortoise agrees to his friend's request.
They meet at the appointed day and time at the starting point. The race starts. This
time the hare dashes off to the finishing line without taking a break and wins the race
comfortably.
Lesson Learnt "Fast and Quick Learner wins the race" & still the story does not end
here.....
The tortoise goes home and thinks hard. He was aware that the hare couldn't be
defeated in speed. He then ponders over his core competence. At last he finds a solution
and invites the hare to another race.
This time the course is changed. It is from Paldi to Airport. The hare agrees. At the
appointed day and time the two meet at the start line and the race begins. The hare
dashes off like a flash. Soon he arrives at the banks of river Sabarmati and
is overwhelmed by a sense of dejection as he did not know how to swim.
The tortoise comes to the bank, looks at the hare with sympathy and coolly gets into
the water. He swims to the other side goes to the airport and comes back.
 Lesson Learnt "Core competence wins the race." Yet again the story extends to its
finale.....
 Both the friends decide it was enough of racing against each other. Why not think
hard and find a way by which they together could travel from Paldi to airport at the
minimum possible time. At the end of a brain storming session they come out with a
solution and decide to try it out the next morning.
At the appointed time they meet at the starting line. The tortoise sits on the back of the
hare. The hare dashes off form Paldi to the banks of Sabarmati. There the hare gets on
the back of the tortoise and the tortoise swiftly crosses the river. On reaching the other
side the tortoise again sits on the back of the hare. The hare runs as fast as he can to
the airport. Thus they both reach airport in the fastest possible time.
Lesson Learnt "Innovation, Smart Thinking and team work wins the race"
POWER OF PRAYER
Diane, a young university student, was home for the summer. She had gone to visit
some friends one evening and time passed quickly as each shared their various
experiences of the past year. She ended up staying longer than planned, and had to
walk home alone.
                                            13
She wasn't afraid because it was a small town and she lived only a few blocks away.
As she walked along under the tall elm trees, Diane asked God to keep her safe from
harm and danger.
When she reached the alley, which was a short cut to her house, she decided to take it.
However, halfway down the alley she noticed a man standing at the end as though he
were waiting for her.
She became uneasy and began to pray, asking for God's protection. Instantly a
comforting feeling of quietness and security wrapped around her, she felt as though
someone was walking with her.
When she reached the end of the alley, she walked right past the man and arrived
home safely. The following day, she read in the newspaper that a young girl had been
raped in the same alley just twenty minutes after she had been there. Feeling
overwhelmed by this tragedy and the fact that it could have been her, she began to
weep.
Thanking the Lord for her safety and to help this young woman, she decided to go to
the police station. She felt she could recognize the man, so she told them her story.
The police asked her if she would be willing to look at a lineup to see if she could
identify him. She agreed and immediately pointed out the man she had seen in the
alley the night before. When the man was told he had been identified, he immediately
broke down and confessed.
The officer thanked Diane for her bravery and asked if there was anything they could
do for her. She asked if they would ask the man one question. Diane was curious as to
why he had not attacked her. When the policeman asked him, he answered, "Because
she wasn't alone. She had two tall men walking on either side of her.”
Moral of the story.... Don't underestimate the power of Prayer!
PERSPECTIVE DOES MATTER
One day a father of a very wealthy family took his son on a trip to the country with the
firm purpose of showing his son how poor people live.
They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very
poor family. On their return from their trip, the father asked his son, How was the
trip?"
"It was great, Dad."
"Did you see how poor people live?" the father asked.
"Oh yeah," said the son.
"So, tell me, what you learned from the trip?" asked the father.
The son answered, "I saw that we have one dog and they had four. We have a pool that
reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no end. We have
imported lanterns in our garden and they have the stars at night. Our patio reaches to
the front yard and they have the whole horizon. We have a small piece of land to live
on and they have fields that go beyond our sight. We have servants who serve us, but
they serve others. We buy our food, but they grow theirs. We have walls around our
property to protect us; they have friends to protect them."
The boy's father was speechless.
Then his son added, "Thanks, Dad, for showing me how poor we are."
Isn't perspective a wonderful thing? Makes you wonder what would happen if we all
gave thanks for everything we have, instead of worrying about what we don't have.
Appreciate every single thing you have, every single day one day at a time.
                                          14
UNCONDITIONAL LOVE
A story is told about a soldier who was finally coming home after having fought in
Vietnam. He called his parents from San Francisco.
"Mom and Dad, I'm coming home, but I've a favor to ask. I have a friend I'd like to
bring home with Me."
"Sure," they replied, "we'd love to meet him."
"There's something you should know the son continued, "he was hurt pretty badly in
the fighting. He stepped on a land mind and lost an arm and a leg. He has nowhere
else to go, and I want him to come live with us."
"I'm sorry to hear that, son. Maybe we can help him find somewhere to live."
"No, Mom and Dad, I want him to live with us."
"Son," said the father, "You don't know what you're asking. Someone with such a
handicap would be a terrible burden on us. We have our own lives to live, and we can't
let something like this interfere with our lives. I think you should just come home and
forget about this guy. He'll find a way to live on his own."
At that point, the son hung up the phone. The parents heard nothing more from him. A
few days later, however, they received a call from the San Francisco police. Their son
had died after falling from a building, they were told.
The police believed it was suicide. The grief-stricken parents flew to San Francisco and
were taken to the city morgue to identify the body of their son. They recognized him,
but to their horror they also discovered something they didn't know, their son had only
one arm and one leg.
The parents in this story are like many of us. We find it easy to love those who are
good-looking or fun to have around, but we don't like people who inconvenience us or
make us feel uncomfortable. We would rather stay away from people who aren't as
healthy, beautiful, or smart as we are.
Thankfully, there's someone who won't treat us that way. Someone who loves us with
an unconditional love that welcomes us into the forever family, regardless of how
messed up we are.
Tonight, before you tuck yourself in for the night, say a little prayer that God will give
you the strength you need to accept people as they are, and to help us all be more
understanding of those who are different from us!!!
There's a miracle called Friendship that dwells in the heart you don't know how it
happens or when it gets started but you know the special lift it always brings and you
realize that Friendship Is God's most precious gift!
Friends are a very rare jewel, indeed. They make you smile and encourage you to
succeed they lend an ear, they share a word of praise, and they always want to open
their hearts to us.
ATTITUDE IS A CHOICE
                                           15
The 92-year-old, petite, well-poised and proud lady, was fully dressed each morning
by eight o'clock. Her hair fashionably coiffed and makeup perfectly applied, even
though she is legally blind, she was moving to a nursing home today.
Her husband of 70 years had recently passed away, making the move necessary.
After many hours of waiting patiently in the lobby of the nursing home, she smiled
sweetly when told her room was ready.
As she maneuvered her walker to the elevator, I provided a visual description of her
tiny room, including the eyelet sheets that had been hung on her window.
"I love it," she stated with the enthusiasm of an eight-year-old having just been
presented with a new puppy.
"Mrs.     Jones,    you      haven't   seen     the    room     ....    Just   wait."
"That doesn't have anything to do with it," she replied. "Happiness is something you
decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my room or not doesn't depend on how the
furniture is arranged...it's how I arrange my mind. I already decided to love it ..."
"It's a decision I make every morning when I wake up. I have a choice; I can spend the
day in bed recounting the difficulty I have with the parts of my body that no longer
work, or get out of bed and be thankful for the ones that do."
Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open I'll focus on the new day and all the
happy memories I've stored away ... just for this time in my life.
Old age is like a bank account ... you withdraw from what you've put in. So, my advice
to you would be to deposit a lot of happiness in the bank account of memories.
Thank you for your part in filling my Memory bank. I am still depositing."
YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT GOD MAY SEND
A woman received a phone call that her daughter was very sick with a fever. She left
work and stopped by the pharmacy for some medication for her daughter. She
returned to her car to find she had locked her keys inside.
She had to get home to her sick daughter, and didn't know what to do.
She called her home to the baby sitter and was told her daughter was getting worse.
The baby-sitter said, "You might find a coat hanger and use that to open the door."
                                          16
The woman found an old rusty coat hanger on the ground, as if someone else had
locked their keys in their car. Then she looked at the hanger and said, "I don't know
how to use this." She bowed her head and asked God for help.
 An old car pulled up, driven by a dirty, greasy, bearded man with a biker skull rag on
his head. The woman thought, "Great, God. This is what you sent to help me????" But
she was desperate, and thankful. The man got out of his car and asked if he could help.
She said "Yes, my daughter is very sick I must get home to her. Please, can you use this
hanger to unlock my car?" He said "SURE." He walked over to the car and in seconds
the car was opened. She hugged the man and through her tears she said, "THANK YOU
SO MUCH... you are a very nice man."
The man replied, "Lady, I am not a nice man. I just got out of prison for car theft."
The woman hugged the man again and cried out loud..... "THANK YOU GOD FOR
SENDING ME A PROFESSIONAL!”
.... Just see how God moves...
IMPORTANCE OF SOUL
Once upon a time...
There was a rich King who had 4 wives.
He loved the 4th wife the most and adorned her with rich robes and treated her to the
finest of delicacies. He gave her nothing but the best.
He also loved the 3rd wife very much and was always showing her off to neighboring
kingdoms. However, he feared that one day she would leave him for another.
He also loved his 2nd wife. She was his confidante and was always kind, considerate
and patient with him. Whenever the King faced a problem, he could confide in her to
help him get through the difficult times.
The King's 1st wife was a very loyal partner and had made great contributions in
maintaining his wealth and kingdom. However, he did not love the first wife and
although she loved him deeply, he hardly took notice of her.
 One day, the King fell ill and he knew his time was short. He thought of his luxurious
life and pondered, "I now have 4 wives with me, but when I die, I'll be all alone.
Thus, he asked the 4th wife, "I have loved you the most, endowed you with the finest
clothing and showered great care over you. Now that I'm dying, will you follow me
and keep me company?"
 "No way!" replied the 4th wife and she walked away without another word.
Her answer cut like a sharp knife right into his heart.
The sad King then asked the 3rd wife, "I have loved you all my life. Now that I'm
dying, will you follow me and keep me company?"
"No!" replied the 3rd wife. "Life is too good! When you die, I'm going to remarry!" His
heart sank and turned cold.
                                           17
He then asked the 2nd wife, "I have always turned to you for help and you've always
been there for me. When I die, will you follow me and keep me company?"
"I'm sorry, I can't help you out this time!" replied the 2nd wife. "At the very most, I can
only send you to your grave."
Her answer came like a bolt of thunder and the King was devastated.
 Then a voice called out:
"I'll leave with you and follow you no matter where you go." The King looked up and
there was his first wife. She was so skinny, she suffered from malnutrition.
Greatly grieved, the King said, "I should have taken much better care of you when I
had the chance!"
In Truth, we all have 4 wives in our lives...
Our 4th wife is our body. No matter how much time and effort we lavish in making it
look good, it'll leave us when we die.
Our 3rd wife is our possessions, status and wealth. When we die, it will all go to others.
Our 2nd wife is our family and friends. No matter how much they have been there for
us, the furthest they can stay by us is up to the grave.
And our 1st wife is our Soul, often neglected in pursuit of wealth, power and pleasures
of the ego.
However, our Soul is the only thing that will follow us wherever we go.
So cultivate, strengthen and cherish it now! It is your greatest gift to offer the world.
Let it Shine!
A BOX OF KISSES
The story goes that some time ago, a man punished his 3-year-old daughter for
wasting a roll of gold wrapping paper. Money was tight and he was furious when the
child tried to decorate a box.
 Nevertheless, the little girl brought the gift to her father the next morning and said,
"This is for you, Daddy." He was embarrassed by his earlier overreaction, but his
anger flared again when he found the box was empty. He yelled at her,” Don’t you
know when you give someone a present, there's supposed to be something inside it?
The little girl looked up at him with tears in her eyes and said, "Oh, Daddy, it's not
empty, I blew kisses into the box. All for you, Daddy."
The father was crushed. He put his arms around his little girl, and he begged for her
forgiveness.
An accident took the life of the child only a short time later and it is told that the man
kept that gold box by his bed for many years and whenever he was discouraged, he
would take out an imaginary kiss and remember the love of the child who had put it
there.
TELL THEM, BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE...
                                                18
One day a teacher asked her students to list the names of the other students in the
room on two sheets of paper, leaving a space between each name.
Then she told them to think of the nicest thing they could say about each of their
classmates and write it down.
It took the remainder of the class period to finish their assignment, and as the students
left the room, each one handed in the papers.
That Saturday, the teacher wrote down the name of each student on a separate sheet
of paper, and listed what everyone else had said about that individual.
On Monday she gave each student his or her list. Before long, the entire class was
smiling. "Really?" she heard whispered. "I never knew that I meant anything to
anyone!" and, "I didn't know others liked me so much." were most of the comments.
No one ever mentioned those papers in class again. She never knew if they discussed
them after class or with their parents, but it didn't matter. The exercise had
accomplished its purpose. The students were happy with themselves and one another.
That group of students moved on.
Several years later, one of the students was killed in Viet Nam and his teacher attended
the funeral of that special student. She had never seen a serviceman in a military coffin
before. He looked so handsome, so mature.
The church was packed with his friends. One by one those who loved him took a last
walk by the coffin. The teacher was the last one to bless the coffin.
As she stood there, one of the soldiers who acted as pallbearer came up to her. "Were
you Mark's math teacher?" he asked. She nodded: "yes." Then he said: "Mark talked
about you a lot."
After the funeral, most of Mark's former classmates went together to a luncheon.
Mark's mother and father were there, obviously waiting to speak with his teacher.
"We want to show you something," his father said, taking a wallet out of his pocket.
"They found this on Mark when he was killed. We thought you might recognize it."
Opening the billfold, he carefully removed two worn pieces of notebook paper that had
obviously been taped, folded and refolded many times. The teacher knew without
looking that the papers were the ones on which she had listed all the good things each
of Mark's classmates had said about him.
"Thank you so much for doing that," Mark's mother said. "As you can see, Mark
treasured it."
All of Mark's former classmates started to gather around. Charlie smiled rather
sheepishly and said, "I still have my list. It's in the top drawer of my desk at home."
Chuck's wife said, "Chuck asked me to put his in our wedding album."
"I have mine too," Marilyn said. "It's in my diary."
Then Vicki, another classmate, reached into her pocketbook, took out her wallet and
showed her worn and frazzled list to the group. "I carry this with me at all times,"
Vicki said and without batting an eyelash, she continued: "I think we all saved our
lists."
That's when the teacher finally sat down and cried. She cried for Mark and for all his
friends who would never see him again.
The density of people in society is so thick that we forget that life will end one day. And
we don't know when that one day will be.
So please, tell the people you love and care for, that they are special and important.
Tell them, before it is too late.
DECISION MAKING
The story given below is quite interesting and really gives us an insight into DECISION
MAKING.
                                            19
Which one will you choose?
A group of children were playing near two railway tracks, one still in use while the
other disused.
Only one child played on the disused track, the rest on the operational track. The train
came, and you were just beside the track interchange. You could make the train change
its course to the disused track and save most of the kids.
However, that would also mean the lone child playing by the disused track would be
sacrificed.
Or would you rather let the train go its way?
Let's take a pause to think what kind of decision we could make...............
Most people might choose to divert the course of the train, and sacrifice
only one child. You might think the same way, I guess.
Exactly, I thought the same way initially because to save most of the
children at the expense of only one child was rational decision most people
would make, morally and emotionally.
But, have you ever thought that the child choosing to play on the disused
track had in fact made the right decision to play at a safe place?
Nevertheless, he had to be sacrificed because of his ignorant friends who
chose to play where the danger was.
This kind of dilemma happens around us everyday. In the office, community,
in politics and especially in a democratic society, the minority is often
sacrificed for the interest of the majority, no matter how foolish or
ignorant the majority are, and how farsighted and knowledgeable the minority
are.
The child who chose not to play with the rest on the operational track was
sidelined. And in the case he was sacrificed, no one would shed a tear for
him.
Some One said he would not try to change the course of the train because he believed
that the kids playing on the operational track should have known very well that track
was still in use, and that they should have run away if they heard the train's sirens.
If the train was diverted, that lone child would definitely die because he
never thought the train could come over to that track!
Moreover, that track was not in use probably because it was not safe. If the train was
diverted to the track, we could put the lives of all passengers on board at stake! And in
your attempt to save a few kids by sacrificing one child, you might end up sacrificing
hundreds of people to save these few kids.
                                           20
While we are all aware that life is full of tough decisions that need to be made, we may
not realize that hasty decisions may not always be the right one.
"Remember that what's right isn't always popular...and what's popular isn't
always right." Everybody makes mistakes; that's why they put erasers on
pencils.
THINK DIFFERENTLY.
Case - I
One of the most memorable case studies on Japanese management was the case of the
empty soap box, which happened in one of Japan's cosmetics companies. The company
received a complaint that a consumer had bought a soap box that was empty.
Immediately the authorities isolated the problem to the assembly line, which
transported all the packaged boxes of soap to the delivery department. For some
reason, one soap box went through the assembly line empty. Management asked its
engineers to solve the problem.
 Post-haste, the engineers worked hard to devise an X-ray machine with high-
resolution monitors manned by two people to watch all the soap boxes that passed
through the line to make sure they were not empty.
But when the employee in another company was posed with the same problem, he
came out with another solution. He bought an industrial electric fan and pointed it at
the assembly line. He switched the fan on, and as each soap box passed the fan, it
simply blew the empty boxes out of the line.
Case - II
When Americans sent astronauts to space, they realised that the normal ball point
pens could not be used in space. This was because due to lack of gravitational force
and low pressure, the ink would leak from the refill. Americans took this as a challenge
and decided to fix this problem. They formed a strong team of 10 scientists to work on
the solution...This team worked for 1 year on this project with an overall expense of $6
Bn. What they came out with was a unique state of the art "Pen" which could even
work at very low pressures and even at zero gravity.
Even Russians faced the same problem when they sent their astronauts in
space..........They used Pencils.
Most of the times complicated problems have very simple solutions....It just requires
you to think differently.
HOW MUCH MONEY DO YOU MAKE IN AN HOUR?
A man came home from work late, tired and irritated, to find his 5-year old son
waiting for him at the door.
"Daddy, May I ask you a question?” the son asked.
 "Yeah sure, what is it?"
"Daddy, how much do you make in an hour?"
                                          21
"That's none of your business. Why do you ask such a thing?” the man
said angrily.
"I just want to know. Please tell me, how much do you make in an hour?"
the little boy pleaded again.
"If you must know, I make Rs 35 an hour."
"Oh", the little boy replied, with his head down.
Then suddenly looking up he said, "Daddy, may I please borrow Rs 10?"
 The father was furious and growling angrily at him said, "If the only reason you
asked that is so that you can borrow some money to buy a silly toy or some other
nonsense, then you march yourself straight to your room and go to bed. I work long
hard hours everyday and don't have time for such childish behavior."
The little boy sadly and quietly went to his room and shut the door.
After about an hour or so, the man's anger had calmed down, and he started to think
that he might have been a little harsh on his son. May be there was something that he
really wanted to buy with those 10 Rupees.
The man went to the door of the little boy's room and opened the door.
"Are you asleep, son?" he asked.
"No Daddy, I'm awake," replied the boy.
"I've been thinking, maybe I was too hard on your earlier," said the man. "It's been a
long long day for me, and I simply took out my aggravation over you. Here's that 10
Rs, you had asked for."
The little boy sat straight up, smiling said,
"Oh! Thank you Thank you Daddy!"
He yelled for a while and then reaching under his pillow he pulled out some more
money.
Father seeing this, that the boy already had some money got angry again.
The son was slowly counting out all the money that he had now.
The father grumbled, "Why did you want more money, for you already had
some?"
"Because I didn't have enough, but now I do," the little boy replied meekishly.
He continued saying "Daddy, I now have Rs.35. Can I buy an hour of your
time? Please do come home early tomorrow. I wish for I could have dinner
with you."
THINK BEFORE YOUR LEAP
One fine day, a bus driver went to the bus garage, started his bus, and drove off along
the route. No problems for the first few stops-a few People got on, a few got off, and
things went generally well. At the next stop, however, a big hulk of a guy got on. Six
feet eight, Built like a wrestler, arms hanging down to the ground. He glared at the
Driver and said, "Big John doesn't pay!" and sat down at the back.
Did I mention that the driver was five feet three, thin, and basically meek? Well, he
was. Naturally, he didn't argue with Big John, but he wasn't happy about it.
The next day the same thing happened-Big John got on again, made a show of refusing
to pay, and sat down. And the next day, and the one after that, and so forth. This
grated on the bus driver, who started losing sleep over the way Big John was taking
advantage of him.
                                           22
Finally he could stand it no longer. He signed up for body building courses, karate,
judo, and all that good stuff. By the end of the summer, he had become quite strong;
what's more, he felt really good about himself.
So on the next Monday, when Big John once again got on the bus and said, "Big John
doesn't pay!" the driver stood up, glared back at the passenger, and screamed, "And
why not?"
With a surprised look on his face, Big John replied, "Big John has a Bus pass."
Moral of the story: "Be sure there is a problem in the first place before working hard to
solve one."
'PUT THE GLASS DOWN TODAY
Professor began his class by holding up a glass with some water in it. he
held it up for all to see & asked the students,' How much do you think this
glass weighs?'
'50gms!'       ....   '100gms!'       ......'125gms'  ......the  students      answered.
'I really don't know unless I weigh it,' said the professor, 'but, my question is: What
would happen if I held it up like this for a few minutes?'
'Nothing' the students said.
'Ok what would happen if I held it up like this for an hour?' the professor asked.
'Your arm would begin to ache' said one of the students.
'You're right, now what would happen if I held it for a day?'
'Your arm could go numb, you might have severe muscle stress & paralysis &
have to go to hospital for sure!' ventured another student & all the students laughed.
Very good. But during all this, did the weight of the glass change?’ asked the professor.
'No'
'Then what caused the arm ache & the muscle stress?' The students were puzzled.
'Put the glass down!' said one of the students.
'Exactly!' said the professor.' Life's problems are something like this. Hold it for a few
minutes in your head & they seem OK. Think of them for a long time & they begin to
ache. Hold it even longer & they begin to paralyze you. You will not be able to do
anything.
It's important to think of the challenges (problems) in your life, but EVEN MORE
IMPORTANT to 'put them down' at the end of every day before you go to
sleep. That way, you are not stressed, you wake up every day fresh & strong & can
handle any issue, any challenge that comes your way!'
Remember friend to 'PUT THE GLASS DOWN TODAY! '
FORGIVE & LOVE OTHERS
A kindergarten teacher asked each child in the class to bring along a plastic bag
containing a few potatoes. Each potato will be given a name of a person that the child
hates, so the number of potatoes that a child will put in his/her plastic bag will depend
on the number of people he/she hates.
So on Monday, every child brought some potatoes with the name of the people he/she
hated. Some had two potatoes; some had three potatoes, while some up to five
potatoes.
The teacher then told the children to carry with them the potatoes in the plastic bag
wherever they go (even to the toilet) for the whole week.
                                           23
As days passed by, and the children started to complain due to the unpleasant smell let
out by the rotten potatoes. Besides, those potatoes they also had to carry bags. On
Friday, the children were relieved.
The teacher asked: "How did you feel while carrying the potatoes with you for the
whole week?"
The children let out their frustrations and started complaining of the trouble that they
had to go through having to carry the heavy and smelly potatoes wherever they go.
Then the teacher explained: "This is exactly what happens when you carry your hatred
for somebody inside your heart. The stench of hatred will contaminate your heart and
you will carry it with you wherever you go.
If we cannot tolerate the smell of rotten potatoes for just one week, can you imagine
what is it like to have the stench of hatred in our heart for our lifetime?
Forgiving others is the best attitude to take. Try to love others even if you don't like
them."
THE MOST IMPORTANT PART
My mother used to ask me what the most important part of the body is.
Through the years I would take a guess at what I thought was the correct answer.
When I was younger, I thought sound was very important to us as humans, so I said,
"My ears, Mommy." She said, 'No. Many people are deaf. But you keep thinking about
it and I will ask you again soon.'
Several years passed before she asked me again. Since making my first attempt, I had
contemplated the correct answer. So this time I told her, 'Mommy, sight is very
important to everybody, so it must be our eyes.'
She looked at me and told me, 'You are learning fast, but the answer is not correct
because there are many people who are blind.'
Stumped again, I continued my quest for knowledge and over the years, Mother asked
me a couple more times and always her answer was 'No, but you are getting smarter
every year, my child.'
Then last year, my Grandpa died. Everybody was hurt. Everybody was crying. Even
my father cried. My Mom looked at me when it was our turn to say our final good-bye
to Grandpa. She asked me, 'Do you know the most important body part yet, my dear?'
I was shocked when she asked me this now. I always thought this was a game between
her and me. She saw the confusion on my face and told me.
'This question is very important. It shows that you have really lived your life.
For every body part you gave me in the past, I have told you were wrong and I have
given you an example why. But today is the day you need to learn this important
lesson.
                                          24
She looked down at me as only a mother can. I saw her eyes well up with tears. She
said, 'My dear, the most important body part is your shoulder'
I asked, 'Is it because it holds up your head?' She replied, 'No, it is because it can hold
the head of a friend or loved one when they cry.
Everybody, need a shoulder to cry on sometime in life, my dear. I only hope that you
have enough love and friends that you will have a shoulder to cry on when you need it.'
Then and there I knew the most important body part is not a selfish one. It is
sympathetic to the pain of others
MOST COMPLEX PROBLEMS DO HAVE A SOLUTION
Many years ago in a small Indian village; a farmer had the misfortune of
owing a large sum of money to a village moneylender.
The moneylender, who was old and ugly, fancied the farmer's beautiful
daughter. So he proposed a bargain.
He said he would forgo the farmer's debt if he could marry his daughter.
Both the farmer and his daughter were horrified by the proposal. So the
cunning money-lender suggested that they let providence decide the matter.
He told them that he would put a black pebble and a white pebble into an
empty money bag.
Then the girl would have to pick one pebble from the bag.
1) If she picked the black pebble, she would become his wife and her
father's debt would be forgiven.
2) If she picked the white pebble she need not marry him and her father's
debt would still be forgiven.
3) But if she refused to pick a pebble, her father would be thrown into
jail.
They were standing on a pebble strewn path in the farmer's field. As they
talked, the moneylender bent over to pick up two pebbles. As he picked them
up, the sharp-eyed girl noticed that he had picked up two black pebbles and
put them into the bag. He then asked the girl to pick a pebble from the bag.
Now, imagine that you were standing in the field.
What would you have done if you were the girl?
If you had to advise her, what would you have told her?
Careful analysis would produce three possibilities:
1. The girl should refuse to take a pebble.
2. The girl should show that there were two black pebbles in the bag and
expose the money-lender as a cheat.
                                            25
3. The girl should pick a black pebble and sacrifice herself in order to
save her father from his debt and imprisonment.
Take a moment to ponder over the story. The above story is used with the
hope that it will make us appreciate the difference between lateral and
logical thinking. The girl's dilemma cannot be solved with traditional
logical thinking. Think of the consequences if she chooses the above logical
answers.
What would you recommend to the Girl to do?
Scroll down if you give up...............
Well, here is what she did....
The girl put her hand into the moneybag and drew out a pebble. Without
looking at it, she fumbled and let it fall onto the pebble-strewn path where
it immediately became lost among all the other pebbles.
"Oh, how clumsy of me," she said. "But never mind, if you look into the bag
for the one that is left, you will be able to tell which pebble I picked."
Since the remaining pebble is black, it must be assumed that she had picked
the white one. And since the money-lender dared not admit his dishonesty,
the girl changed what seemed an impossible situation into an extremely
advantageous one.
MORAL OF THE STORY:
Most complex problems do have a solution. It is only that we don't attempt to think.
THE SOUP STORY
An old friend of Nasruddin once came visiting and brought along a big chicken.
Mullah’s wife cooked the chicken and they enjoyed the feast for dinner.
The next morning, they had delicious chicken soup that Mullah’s wife prepared. The
friend enjoyed his short stay with Mullah.
 The next day when he was leaving, Mullah returned his friend’s profuse thanks by
thanking the latter for bringing the big chicken along.
An hour after his friend had left Mullah heard a knock on the door. When he opened
the door, a man introduced himself and quickly entered: “I am a friend of your friend
who brought you that big chicken!”
Reluctant to insult the friend of a friend, Mullah invited the man inside and asked him
to stay back for lunch. They had some lovely chicken stew for lunch, which the man
also enjoyed. Having eaten like a glutton, the man left thanking Mullah profusely for
the tasty chicken.
A couple of hours later, there was a knock on the door and Mullah beheld another
stranger before him. “I am the friend of your friend’s friend,” the man smiled.
                                            26
Again, not wanting to turn away the friend of a friend’s friend, Mullah invited him
inside and asked him to stay back for dinner. The man accepted hurriedly. He too
feasted on some delicious chicken stew and left smacking his lips some time later.
Barely had the man left, there was another knock and another stranger at the door!
The friend-of-a-friend story all because of a chicken was now getting Mullah’s goat!
“My house has been turned into an eating house!” Mullah muttered to himself as he
permitted the man to enter.
The next day too there was no respite as another man entered with the same
tale: “I am a friend of the friend of the friend of the friend of the friend who had come
here with a huge chicken!”
Mullah smiled weakly and asked the man to come right in and have a meal.
The man entered hurriedly, smacking his lips in anticipation of a tasty chicken meal. A
few    minutes      later,  a     bowl     of   soup    was     placed   before   him.
Just one sip told the man that this ‘soup’ was nothing but boiled water.
“This is nothing but boiled water!” the man protested angrily.
“Not at all!” Mullah smiled wickedly. “This is the soup of the soup of the soup of the
soup of the soup of the soup of the chicken!”
Moral of the story:
When people take advantage of your generosity and hospitality, do not turn
them away rudely. Instead, invite them in and serve them a lesson they will
never forget for a long time to come – just as Mullah did by serving the
soup of the soup of the soup………….
BE OBSERVANT
Chaman and Jagan joined a wholesale company together just after graduation.
Both worked very hard.
After several years, the boss promoted Jagan to sales executive but Chaman remained
a sales rep. One day Chaman could not take it anymore, tender resignation to the boss
and complained the boss did not value hard working staff, but only promoted those
who flattered him.
The boss knew that Chaman worked very hard for the years, but in order to help
Chaman realise the difference between him and Jagan, the boss asked Chaman to do
the following. Go and find out anyone selling water melon in the market? Chaman
returned and said yes. The boss asked how much per kg? Chaman went back to the
market to ask and returned to inform boss the Rs.12 per kg.
Boss told Chaman, I will ask Jagan the same question? Jagan went, returned and said,
boss, only one person selling water melon. Rs.12 per kg, Rs.100 for 10 kg, he has
inventory of 340 melons. On the table 58 melons, every melon weighs
about 15 kg, bought from the South two days ago, they are fresh and red,
good quality.
                                           27
Chaman was very impressed and realised the difference between himself and Jagan.
He decided not to resign but to learn from Jagan.
My dear friends, a more successful person is more observant, thinks more and
understands in depth. For the same matter, a more successful person sees several
years ahead, while we see only tomorrow. The difference between a year and a day is
365 times.
Think! How far have you seen ahead in your life? How thoughtful in depth are you?
EFFECTIVE                                                        COMMUNICATION
Jack and Max are walking from religious service. Jack wonders whether it would be
all right to smoke while praying.
Max replies, "Why don't you ask the Priest?"
So Jack goes up to the Priest and asks, "Priest, may I smoke while I pray?"
But the Priest says, "No, my son, you may not. That's utter disrespect to our religion."
Jack goes back to his friend and tells him what the good Priest told him.
Max says, "I'm not surprised. You asked the wrong question. Let me try."
And so Max goes up to the Priest and asks, "Priest, may I pray while I smoke?"
To which the Priest eagerly replies, "By all means, my son. By all means."
Moral: The reply you get depends on the question you ask.
For Example: Can I work on this project while I'm on vacation?
WHAT IS FRIENDSHIP?
'How long will you be poring over that newspaper? Will you come here right away
and make your darling daughter eat her food?'
I tossed the paper away and rushed to the scene. My only daughter Sindu looked
frightened. Tears were welling up in her eyes. In front of her was a bowl filled to its
brim with Curd Rice.
Sindu is a nice child, quite intelligent for her age. She has just turned eight. She
particularly detested Curd Rice. My mother and my wife are orthodox, and believe
firmly in the 'cooling effects' of Curd Rice!
I cleared my throat, and picked up the bowl. "Sindu, darling, why don't you take a few
mouthful of this Curd Rice? Just for Dad's sake, dear And, if you don't, your Mom will
shout at me'
I could sense my wife's scowl behind my back. Sindu softened a bit, and wiped her
tears with the back of her hands. 'OK, Dad. I will eat not just a few mouthfuls, but the
whole lot of this. But, you should...' Sindu hesitated.
'Dad, if I eat this entire Curd Rice, will you give me whatever I ask for?'
'Oh sure, darling'. 'Promise?'
'Promise'. I covered the pink soft hand extended by my daughter with mine, and
clinched the deal.
                                          28
'Ask Mom also to give a similar promise', my daughter insisted. My wife slapped her
hand on Sindu's, muttering 'Promise', without any emotion. Now I became a bit
anxious. 'Sindumma, you shouldn't insist on getting a computer or any such expensive
items. Dad does not have that kind of money right now. OK?'
'No, Dad. I do not want anything expensive'. Slowly and painfully, she finished eating
the whole quantity. I was silently angry with my wife and my mother for forcing my
child eat something that she detested.
After the ordeal was through, Sindu came to me with her eyes wide with expectation.
All our attention was on her. 'Dad, I want to have my head shaved off, this Sunday!'
was her demand!
'Atrocious!' shouted my wife, 'a girl child having her head shaved off? Impossible!’
'Never in our family!' my mother rasped. 'She has been watching too much of
television. Our culture is getting totally spoiled with these TV programs!'
'Sindumma, why don't you ask for something else? We will be sad seeing you with a
clean-shaven head.'
'No, Dad. I do not want anything else', Sindu said with finality.
'Please, Sindu, why don't you try to understand our feelings?' I tried to plead with her
'Dad, you saw how difficult it was for me to eat that Curd Rice'. Sindu was in tears.
'And you promised to grant me whatever I ask for. Now, you are going back on your
words.     Was     it    not     you     who      told    me      the    story     of
King Harishchandra, and its moral that we should honor our promises no matter
what?'
It was time for me to call the shots. 'Our promise must be kept.'
'Are you out your mind?' chorused my mother and wife.
'No. If we go back on our promises, she will never learn to honor her own. Sindu, your
wish will be fulfilled.'
With her head clean-shaven, Sindu had a round-face, and her eyes looked big &
beautiful.
On Monday morning, I dropped her at her school. It was a sight to watch my hairless
Sindu walking towards her classroom. She turned around and waved.
I waved back with a smile. Just then, a boy alighted from a car, and shouted, 'Sinduja,
please wait for me!'
What struck me was the hairless head of that boy. 'May be, that is the in-stuff', I
thought.
'Sir, your daughter Sinduja is great indeed!' Without introducing herself, a lady got
out of the car, and continued, 'That boy who is walking along with your daughter is
my son Harish. He is suffering from ... ... leukemia.'
She paused to muffle her sobs. 'Harish could not attend the school for the whole of the
last month. He lost all his hair due to the side effects of the chemotherapy. He refused
to come back to school fearing the unintentional but cruel teasing of the schoolmates.
Sinduja visited him last week, and promised him that she will take care of the teasing
issue.
                                           29
But, I never imagined she would sacrifice her lovely hair for the sake of my son! Sir,
you and your wife are blessed to have such a noble soul as your daughter.'
I stood transfixed. And then, I wept...
'My little Angel, will you grant me a boon? Should there be another birth for me, will
you be my mother, and teach me what Friendship is?'
"Ninety-nine percent of the failures come from people who have the habit
of making excuses."
BATTLE OUT THE UNFAIR& EMERGE OUT VICTORIOUS..!
Around two weeks ago I was called to judge a talent contest at one of the city colleges.
I noticed all the participants were given slips of paper with a topic written on it and
told to come up and speak for three minutes. Lots were drawn as to who would be the
first speaker and the next and the next. The first contestant I noticed looked a little
disgruntled as he got onto the podium to address the others.
"My fellow students and respected judges," he said loudly, "this is an unfair contest!"
I, along with my fellow judges looked up surprised. "I have been given this
paper," he continued, "to speak on a subject with just a few minutes preparation
whereas those after me have more time to work on their speech.
This is unfair!" He then proceeded to leave the stage and stormed out of the
hall.    Nobody      missed      him     and     the     contest   went    on     smoothly.
I met him on the landing as I was being escorted out later.
"Who said life is fair?" I asked him with a smile. He looked at me startled
and I asked him to walk with me to my car. "Life," I told him, "is fighting
the unfair and still winning! Do you read automobile magazines?"
"Yes," he said eagerly, "I do."
"Have you seen statistics shown when a new car is being introduced into the
market? They talk about speed and torque and transmission and horse power."
"Yes," he nodded.
"But there is a line they put after all these figures. They say all this data is when there
are ideal road conditions!"
"Yes," he said again.
"Show me ideal road conditions?" I asked him and he smiled. "The car that
sells well," I continued is the car that will deliver power and speed and
durability in the worst of roads, in potholes and mud and slush. That car is
a winner!"
We had reached my car and he stood by my side as I heaved myself in. "Don't
look for ideal playing conditions," I said. "Fight the unfair and come out a winner!" I
looked back in my rear view mirror as I drove away and saw him
smile and wave and knew he would fight the unfair from now on.
The fight never stops. Ask all the successful people in our own country. They fight
regardless whether the battle is fair or unfair. Stop telling the world about the unfair
deal you've got out of life; start battling the unfair, come out victorious..!
THE 90/10 PRINCIPLE
Discover the 90/10 Principle. It will change your life (at least the way you react to
situations). What is this principle?
                                            30
10% of life is made up of what happens to you. 90% of life is decided by how you react.
What does this mean? We really have no control over 10% of what happens to us. We
cannot stop the car from breaking down. The plane will be late arriving, which throws
our whole schedule off. A driver may cut us off in traffic. We have no control over this
10%. The other 90% is different. You determine the other 90%.]
How? By your reaction. You cannot control a red light, but you can control your
reaction. Don't let people fool you; YOU can control how you react.
Let's use an example.
You are eating breakfast with your family. Your daughter knocks over a cup of coffee
onto your business shirt. You have no control over what just what happened. What
happens when the next will be determined by how you react.
You curse. You harshly scold your daughter for knocking the cup over.
She breaks down in tears. After scolding her, you turn to your spouse and criticize her
for placing the cup too close to the edge of the table. A short verbal battle follows. You
storm upstairs and change your shirt. Back downstairs, you find your daughter has
been too busy crying to finish breakfast and get ready for school. She misses the bus.
Your spouse must leave immediately for work.
You rush to the car and drive your daughter to school. Because you are late, you drive
40 miles an hour in a 30 mph speed limit. After a 15-minute delay and throwing $60
traffic fine away, you arrive at school. Your daughter runs into the building without
saying goodbye. After arriving at the office 20 minutes late, you find you forgot your
briefcase. Your day has started terrible. As it continues, it seems to get worse and
worse. You look forward to coming home, When you arrive home, you find small
wedge in your relationship with your spouse and daughter.
Why? Because of how you reacted in the morning. Why did you have a bad day?
  A) Did the coffee cause it?
  B) Did your daughter cause it?
  C) Did the policeman cause it?
  D) Did you cause it?
   The answer is “D".
   You had no control over what happened with the coffee. How you reacted in those 5
   seconds is what caused your bad day. Here is what could have and should have
   happened. Coffee splashes over you. Your daughter is about to cry. You gently say,
   "its ok honey, you just need, to be more careful next time". Grabbing a towel you
   rush upstairs. After grabbing a new shirt and your briefcase, you come back down
   in time to look through the window and see your child getting on the bus. She turns
   and waves. You arrive 5 minutes early and cheerfully greet the staff. Your boss
   comments on how good the day you are having.
   Notice the difference?
   Two different scenarios. Both started the same. Both ended different.
   Why? Because of how you REACTED.
   You really do not have any control over 10% of what happens. The other 90% was
   determined by your reaction.
                                           31
Here     are     some       ways    to     apply       the     90/10    principle.
   If someone says something negative about you, don't be a sponge.
   Let the attack roll off like water on glass. You don't have to let the negative
   comment affect you! React properly and it will not ruin your day. A wrong reaction
   could result in losing a friend, being fired, getting stressed out etc.
   How do you react if someone cuts you off in traffic?
   Do you lose your temper?
   Pound on the steering wheel? A friend of mine had the steering wheel fall off)
Do you curse?
Does your blood pressure skyrocket?
Do you try and bump them?
WHO CARES if you arrive ten seconds later at work? Why let the cars ruin your drive?
Remember the 90/10 principle, and do not worry about it.
You are told you lost your job. Why lose sleep and get irritated? It will work out. Use
your worrying energy and time into finding another job.
The plane is late; it is going to mangle your schedule for the day. Why take out your
frustration on the flight attendant? She has no control over what is going on. Use your
time to study, get to know the other passenger.
Why get stressed out? It will just make things worse. Now you know the 90-10
principle. Apply it and you will be amazed at the results. You will lose nothing if you
try it.
The 90-10 principle is incredible. Very few know and apply this principle. The result?
Millions of people are suffering from undeserved stress, trials, problems and
heartache.
We all must understand and apply the 90/10 principle.
It CAN change your life***!!!!!!
A SWEET LOVE STORY
He met her on a party. She was so outstanding, many guys chasing after her, while he
was so normal, nobody paid attention to him. At the end of the party, he invited her to
have coffee with him, she was surprised, but due to being polite, she promised.
They sat in a nice coffee shop, he was too nervous to say anything, she felt
uncomfortable, she thought, please, let me go home. Suddenly he asked the waiter:
"would you please give me some salt? I'd like to put it in my coffee."
Everybody stared at him, so strange! His face turned red, but, still, he put the salt in
his coffee and drank it. She asked him curiously: why you have this hobby? He replied:
"when I was a little boy, I was living near the sea, I liked playing in the sea, and I
could feel the taste of the sea, just like the taste of the salty coffee. Now every time I
have the salty coffee, I always think of my childhood, think of my home town, I miss
my home town so much, I miss my parents who are still living there". While saying
that tears filled his eyes. She was deeply touched.
That's his true feeling, from the bottom of his heart. A man who can tell out his
homesickness, he must be a man who loves home, cares about home, has responsibility
                                           32
of home. Then she also started to speak, spoke about her far away hometown, her
childhood, her family. That was a really nice talk, also a beautiful beginning of their
story.
They continued to date. She found that actually he was a man who meets all her
demands; he had tolerance, was kind hearted, warm, careful. He was such a good
person but she almost missed him! Thanks to his salty coffee!
Then the story was just like every beautiful love story, the princess married to the
prince, and then they were living the happy life...
And, every time she made coffee for him, she put some salt in the coffee, as she knew
that's the way he liked it. After 40 years, he passed away, left her a letter which said:"
My dearest, please forgive me, forgive my whole life lie. This was the only lie I said to
you---the salty coffee. Remember the first time we dated? I was so nervous at that
time, actually I wanted some sugar, but I said salt it was hard for me to change so I
just went ahead. I never thought that could be the start of our communication!
I tried to tell you the truth many times in my life, but I was too afraid to do that, as I
have promised not to lie to you for anything... Now I'm dying, I am afraid of nothing
so I tell you the truth: I don't like the salty coffee, what a strange bad taste. But I have
had the salty coffee for my whole life! Since I knew you, I never feel sorry for anything
I do for you. Having you with me is my biggest happiness for my whole life. If I can
live for the second time, still want to know you and have you for my whole life, even
though I have to drink the salty coffee again".
Her tears made the letter totally wet.
Someday, someone asked her: what's the taste of salty coffee?
It's sweet. She replied.
LOVE AND TIME
Once upon a time, there was an island where all the feelings lived: Happiness,
Sadness, Knowledge, and all of the others, including Love. One day it was announced
to the feelings that the island would sink, so all constructed boats and left. Except for
Love. Love was the only one who stayed. Love wanted to hold out until the last
possible moment.
When the island had almost sunk, Love decided to ask for help.
Richness was passing by Love in a grand boat. Love said, "Richness, can you take me
with you?"
Richness answered, "No, I can't. There is a lot of gold and silver in my boat. There is no
place here for you."
Love decided to ask Vanity who was also passing by in a beautiful vessel. "Vanity,
please help me!"
"I can't help you, Love. You are all wet and might damage my boat," Vanity
answered.
Sadness was close by so Love asked, "Sadness, let me go with you." "Oh . . . Love, I am
so sad that I need to be by myself!"
                                            33
Happiness passed by Love, too, but she was so happy that she did not even
hear when Love called her.
Suddenly, there was a voice, "Come, Love, I will take you." It was an elder.
So blessed and overjoyed, Love even forgot to ask the elder where they were
going. When they arrived at dry land, the elder went her own way. Realizing
how much was owed the elder, Love asked Knowledge, another elder, "Who helped
me?"
"It was Time," Knowledge answered.
"Time?" asked Love. "But why did Time help me?"
Knowledge smiled with deep wisdom and answered, "Because only Time is
capable of understanding how valuable Love is."
COMMITMENT
I will never forget what my old headmaster told taught me. Normally when you are
only 15 years of age you do not remember most of the things that are preached by your
teachers. But, this particular story is one such lesson that I will never forget. Every
time I drift off course, I get reminded of this story.
It was a normal Monday morning at an assembly, and he was addressing the
students on important things in life and about committing ourselves to what
is important to us. This is how the story went:
An old man lived in a certain part of London, and he would wake up every morning
and go to the subway. He would get the train right to Central London, and then sit at
the street corner and beg. He would do this every single day of his life. He sat at the
same street corner and begged for almost 20 years.
His house was filthy, and a stench came out of the house and it smelled horribly. The
neighbors could not stand the smell anymore, so they summoned the police officers to
clear the place. The officers knocked down the door and cleaned the house. There were
small bags of money all over the house that he had collected over the years.
The police counted the money, and they soon realized that the old man was a
millionaire. They waited outside his house in anticipation to share the good
news with him. When he arrived home that evening, he was met by one the
officers who told him that there was no need for him to beg any more as he
was a rich man now, a millionaire.
He said nothing at all; he went into his house and locked the door. The next
morning he woke up as usual, went to the subway, got into the train, and sat
at the street corner and continued to beg.
Obviously, this old man had no great plans, dreams or anything significant
for his life. We learn nothing from this story other than staying focused on
the things we enjoy doing, commitment.
We should remain true to our course; which may mean committing yourselves to
things that people around you would normally disapprove. Let nothing distract us
from being happy, let nothing else determine our fate, but ourselves.
                                          34
What makes us happy is what matters in the end, not what we acquire.
THE OLD MAN AND HIS SHOE
One day an old man boarded a bus. As he was going up the steps, one of his shoes
slipped off. The door closed and the bus moved off so he was unable to retrieve it. The
old man calmly took off his other shoe and threw it out of the window. A young man
on the bus saw what happened, and could not help going up to the old man and
asking, "I noticed what you did, sir. Why did you throw out your other shoe?" The old
man promptly replied, "So that whoever finds them will be able to use them.
" The old man in the story understood a fundamental philosophy for life - do not hold
on to something simply for the sake of possessing it or because you do not wish others
to have it. We lose things all the time. The loss may seem to us grievous and unjust
initially, but loss only happens so that positive changes can occur in our lives. We
should not always assume that losing something is bad, because if things do not shift,
we'll never become better people or experience better things.
That's not to say of course that we only lose "bad" things; it simply means that in order
for us to mature emotionally and spiritually, and for us to contribute to the world, the
interchange between loss and gain is necessary.
Hoarding possessions does nothing to make the world better for us. We all have to
decide constantly if some things or people have run their course in our lives or would
be better off with others.
MAKE A DIFFERENCE TODAY
A man was walking down the beach at sunset. As he walked along, he saw
another man in the distance. He noticed this man kept leaning down, picking
up something and throwing it out into the water, again and again. As, he
approached even closer, he noticed that the man was picking up starfish that
had been washed up on the beach. He was throwing them back into the water,
one by one.
Puzzled, he approached the man and said, "Good Evening. I was wondering what you
are doing."
"I'm throwing these starfish back into the ocean. You see, its low tide and all these
starfish have been washed up onto the shore. If, I don't throw them back into the
ocean, they'll die up here from lack of oxygen."
"But, there must be thousands of starfish on this beach. You can't possible get to all of
them. And, don't you realize this is probably happening on hundreds of beaches all up
and down this coast. Can't you see that you can't possibly make a difference?"
The man bent down and picked up yet another starfish, and threw it back into
the ocean. With a smile he replied, "Made a difference to that one!!!"
Just remember, no matter how small the deed it really does makes a difference.
Make a difference today. Do something nice for someone else.
  • 1. TWO TRAVELING ANGELS Two traveling angels stopped to spend the night in the home of a wealthy family. The family was rude and refused to let the angels stay in the mansion's guest room. Instead the angels were given a small space in the cold basement. As they made their bed on the hard floor, the older angel saw a hole in the wall and repaired it. When the younger angel asked why, the older angel replied, "Things aren't always what they seem." The next night the pair came to rest at the house of a very poor, but very hospitable farmer and his wife. After sharing what little food they had the couple let the angels sleep in their bed where they could have a good night's rest. When the sun came up the next morning the angels found the farmer and his wife in tears. Their only cow, whose milk had been their sole income, lay dead in the field. The younger angel was infuriated and asked the older angel how could you have let this happen? The first man had everything, yet you helped him, she accused. The second family had little but was willing to share everything, and you let the cow die. "Things aren't always what they seem," the older angel replied. "When we stayed in the basement of the mansion, I noticed there was gold stored in that hole in the wall. Since the owner was so obsessed with greed and unwilling to share his good fortune, I sealed the wall so he wouldn't find it." "Then last night as we slept in the farmer’s bed, the angel of death came for his wife. I gave him the cow instead. Things aren't always what they seem." Sometimes that is exactly what happens when things don't turn out the way they should. If you have faith, you just need to trust that every out come is always to your advantage. You just might not know it until some time later... Some people come into our lives and quickly go... Some people (become friends) and stay a while... leaving beautiful footprints on our hearts... Yesterday is history. Tomorrow a mystery. Today is a gift. That's why it's called the present! I think this is special...live and savor every moment... This is not a dress rehearsal! SAND & STONE A story tells that two friends were walking through the desert. During some point of the journey they had an argument, and one friend slapped the other one in the face. The one who got slapped was hurt, but without saying anything, wrote in the sand "TODAY MY BEST FRIEND SLAPPED ME IN THE FACE." They kept on walking until they found an oasis, where they decided to take a bath. The one who had been slapped got stuck in the mire and started drowning, but the friend saved him. After he recovered from the near drowning, he wrote on a stone "TODAY MY BEST FRIEND SAVED MY LIFE." The friend who had slapped and saved his best friend asked him, "After I hurt you, you wrote in the sand and now, you write on a stone, why?" The other friend replied "When someone hurts us we should write it down in sand where winds of Forgiveness 1
  • 2. can erase it away. But, when someone does something good for us, we must engrave it in stone where no wind can ever erase it." LEARN TO WRITE YOUR HURTS IN THE SAND AND TO CARVE YOUR BENEFITS IN STONE. A Special Person - They say it takes a minute to find a special person, an hour to appreciate them, a day to love them, but then an entire life to forget them. Take the time to live!!! FEELINGS AND LOVE..... Once upon a time, there was an island where all the feelings lived Happiness, Sadness, Knowledge, and all of the others, including Love. One day it was announced to the feelings that the island would sink, so all prepared their boats and left. Love wanted to persevere until the last possible moment. When the island was almost sinking, Love decided to ask for help. Richness was passing by Love in a grand boat. Love said, "Richness, can you take me with you? “Richness answered, "No, I can't. There is a lot of gold and silver in my boat. There is no place here for you." Love decided to ask Vanity who was also passing by in a beautiful vessel, "Vanity, please help me!" "I can't help you Love. You are all wet and might damage my boat." Vanity answered. Sadness was close by so Love asked for help, "Sadness let me go with you." "Oh....Love, I am so sad that I need to be by myself!" Happiness passed by Love too, but he was so happy that she did not even hear when Love called her! Suddenly, there was a voice, "Come Love, I will take you." It was an elder. Love felt so blessed and overjoyed that he even forgot to ask the elder his name. When they arrived at dry land, the elder went his own way. Love realizing how much he owed the elder and asked Knowledge, another elder, "Who helped me?" "It was Time," Knowledge answered. "Time?" asked Love. "But why did Time help me?" Knowledge smiled with deep wisdom and answered, "Because, only Time is capable of understanding how great Love is." MAKE YOUR CHOICE A woman came out of her house and saw 3 old men with long white beards sitting in her front yard. She did not recognize them. She said "I don't think I know you, but you must be hungry. Please come in and have something to eat." "Is the man of the house home?” they asked. "No", she said. "He's out." "Then we cannot come in", they replied. In the evening when her husband came home, she told him what had happened. "Go tell them I am home and invite them in!" The woman went out and invited the men in. "We do not go into a House together," they replied. "Why is that?" she wanted to know. One of the old men explained "His name is Wealth," he said pointing to one of his friends, and said pointing to another one, "He is Success, and I am Love." Then he added, "Now go in and discuss with your husband which one of us you want in your home." 2
  • 3. The woman went in and told her husband what was said. Her husband was overjoyed. "How nice!!” he said. "Since that is the case, let us invite Wealth. Let him come and fill our home with wealth!" His wife disagreed. "My dear, why don't we invite Success?" Their daughter-in-law was listening from the other corner of the house. She jumped in with her own suggestion "Would it not be better to invite Love? Our home will then be filled with love!" "Let us heed our daughter-in-law's advice," the husband said to his wife. "Go out and invite Love to be our guest." The woman went out and asked the 3 old men, "Which one of you is Love? Please come in and be our guest." Love got up and started walking toward the house. The other 2 also got up and followed him. Surprised, the lady asked Wealth and Success "I only invited Love, Why are you coming in?" The old men replied together "If you had invited Wealth or Success, the other two of us would've stayed out, but since you invited Love, wherever He goes, we go with him. Wherever there is Love, there is also Wealth and Success!!!!!!" OUR WISH FOR YOU... Where there is pain, we wish you peace and mercy. Where there is self-doubting, we wish you a renewed confidence in Your Ability to work through them. Where there is tiredness, or exhaustion, we wish you understanding, patience, and renewed strength. Where there is fear, we wish you love, and courage. "WE ARE WHAT WE BELIEVE WE ARE" A well known speaker started off his seminar by holding up a $ 500 Note. In the room of 200, he asked, "who would like this $ 500?' Hands started going up. He said, "I am going to give this note to one of you, but first let me do this.' He proceeded to crumple the note up. He then asked, 'who still wants it?' Still, the hands were up in the air. 'Well,' he replied. 'What if I do this’? And the dropped it on the ground and started to grind it into the floor with his shoe. He picked it up now, all crumpled and dirty. 'Now who still wants it?' Still the hands went into the air. "My friends, you all learned a very valuable lesson. No matter what I did to the money, you still wanted it because it did not decrease in value. It was still worth $ 500" Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crumpled and ground into the dirt by the decisions we make and the circumstances that come our way. We feel as though we are worthless. But no matter what has happened or what will happen, you will never Loose your value. "Never let yesterday's disappointments overshadow tomorrow's dreams". "We are what we believe we are". WHEN GOD MADE MOTHERS By the time God made mothers, he was into his sixth day of working overtime. An Angel appeared and said "Why are you spending so much time on this one?" In addition, God answered and said, “Have you seen the spec sheet on her? 3
  • 4. She has to be completely washable, but not plastic, have 200 movable parts, all replaceable, run on black coffee and leftovers, have a lap that can hold three children at one time and that disappear when she stands up, have a kiss that can cure anything from a scraped knee to a broken heart, and have six pairs of hands." The Angel was astounded at the requirements for this one. "Six pairs of hands! No Way!" said the Angel. God replied, "Oh, it's not the hands that are the problem, it’s the three pairs of eyes that mothers must have!" And that's just on the standard model?" the Angel asked. God nodded in agreement, "Yep, one pair of eyes are to see through the closed door as she asks her children what they are doing, even though she already knows. Another pair in the back of her head is to see what she needs to know even though no one thinks she can. And the third pair is here in the front of her head. They are for looking at an errant child and saying that she understands and loves him or her without even saying a single word." The Angel tried to stop God. "This is too much work for one day. Wait until tomorrow to finish...” "But I can't," God protested. "I am so close to finishing this creation that is so close to my own heart. She already heals herself when she is sick and can feed a family of six on a pound of hamburger and can get a nine year old to stand in the shower!" The Angel moved closer and touched the woman. "But you have made her so soft, Lord." "She is soft", the Lord agreed, "but I have also made her tough. You have no idea what she can endure or accomplish." "Will she be able to think?” asked the Angel. The Lord replied, "Not only will she be able to think, she will be able to reason, and negotiate." The Angel then noticed something, reached out, and touched the woman's cheek. "Oops, it looks like you have a leak with this model. I told you that you were trying to put too much into this one." "That's not a leak", God said, "That's a tear!" "What's the tear for?" the Angel asked. God said, "The tear is her way of expressing her joy, her sorrow, her disappointment, her pain, her loneliness, her grief, and her pride." The Angel was impressed. "You are a genius, Lord. You thought of everything. WOMEN are truly amazing!" CRACKED POT A water bearer in India had two large pots, each hung on the end of a pole which he carried across his neck. One of the pots was perfectly made and never leaked. The other pot had a crack in it and by the time the water bearer reached his master's house it had leaked much of its water and was only half full. For a full two years this went on daily, with the bearer delivering only one and a half pots full of water to his master's house. Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments. But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection, and miserable that it was able to accomplish only half of what it had been made to do. After two years of what it perceived to be a bitter failure, it spoke to the water bearer one day by the stream. "I am ashamed of myself, and I want to apologize to you." "Why?" asked the bearer. "What are you ashamed of?" "I have been able, for these past two years, to deliver only half my load because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your master's house. Because of my flaws, you have to do all of this work, and you don't get full value from your efforts," the pot said. 4
  • 5. The water bearer felt sorry for the old cracked pot, and in his compassion he said, "As we return to the master's house, I want you to notice the beautiful flowers along the path." Indeed, as they went up the hill, the old cracked pot took notice of the sun warming the beautiful wild flowers on the side of the path, and this cheered it some. But at the end of the trail, it still felt bad because it had leaked out half its load, and so again the pot apologized to the bearer for its failure. The bearer said to the pot, "Did you notice that there were flowers only on your side of your path, but not on the other pot's side? That's because I have always known about your flaw, and I took advantage of it. I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day while we walk back from the stream, you've watered them. For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate my master's table. Without you being just the way you are, he would not have this beauty to grace his house." Each of us has our own unique flaws. We're all cracked pots. But if we will allow it, God will use our flaws to grace his table. In God's great economy, nothing goes to waste. Don't be afraid of your flaws. Acknowledge them, and you too can be the cause of beauty. Know that in our weakness we find our strength. SPECIAL OLYMPICS A few years ago, at the Seattle Special Olympics, nine contestants, all physically or mentally disabled, assembled at the starting line for the 100-yard dash. At the gun, they all started out, not exactly in a dash, but a relish to run the race to the finish and win. All, that is, except one little boy who stumbled on the asphalt, tumbled over a couple of times, and began to cry. The other eight heard the boy cry. They slowed down and looked back. Then they all turned around and went back ... every one of them. One girl with Down syndrome bent down and kissed him and said, "This will make it better." Then all nine linked arms and walked together to the finish line. Everyone in the stadium stood, and the cheering went on for several minutes. And they call some of these people "retarded"...... People who were there are still telling the story. Why? Because deep down we know this one thing what matters in this life is more than winning for ourselves. What matters in this life is helping others win, even if it means slowing down and changing our course. "A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle" TREASURE WHAT YOU HAVE Sometimes we spend time asking who is responsible or who to blame, whether in a relationship, in a job or with the people we know. We miss out some warmth in human relationship to give each other support. Treasure what you have. Just a little story that can change the way we generally look at... 5
  • 6. A boy was born to a couple after eleven years of marriage. They were a loving couple and the boy was the apple of their eyes. When the boy was around two years old, one morning the husband saw a medicine bottle open. He was late for work so he asked the wife to cap the bottle and keep it in the cupboard. The mother, preoccupied in the kitchen totally forgot the matter. The boy playfully went to the medicine bottle and, fascinated with its color, drank it all. It happened to be a poisonous medicine meant for adults in small dosages. When the child showed signs of poisoning the mother took him to the hospital, where he died. The mother was stunned. She was terrified how to face her husband. When the distraught father came to the hospital and saw the dead child, he looked at his wife and uttered just four words. QUESTIONS 1. What were the four words? 2. What is the implication of this story? Check with the answers only after you have tried to come up with your own. Please scroll down. ANSWER The husband just said “I Love You Darling “. The husband's totally unexpected reaction is proactive behavior. He is indeed a genius in human relationships. The child is dead. He can never be brought back to life. There is no point in finding fault with the mother. She had also lost her only child. What she needed at that moment was consolation and sympathy from the husband. That is what he gave her. If ever everyone can look at life with this kind of perspective, there would be much fewer problems in the world. To be happy with a man you must understand him a lot and love him a little. To be happy with a woman you must understand her a lot and love her with all your heart. "A journey of a thousand miles, begins but with a single step.”Take off all your envies, jealousies, unforgiveness, selfishness, and fears AND you will find things are actually not as difficult as you think." There are many beautiful, charming and wonderful men and women here on earth; it's just a matter of who you get to meet along the way and who you choose to end up with for the rest of your life. "Love has its own time, season and reason. You can't ask for it to stay. You can only embrace it when it comes and be glad that for a moment in your life, it was yours” CHANGE YOUR STRATEGY One day, there was a blind man sitting on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet and a sign that read "I am blind, please help". A creative publicist was walking by him and stopped to observe he only had a few coins in his hat, he dropped a few more coins in his hat and without asking for his permission took the sign, turned it around, and wrote another announcement. 6
  • 7. He placed the sign by his feet and left. That afternoon the creative publicist returned by the blind man and noticed that his hat was full of bills and coins. The blind man recognized his footsteps and asked if it was him who had re-written his sign and he wanted to know what did he write on it? The publicist responded "Nothing that was not true, I just rewrote your sign differently". He smiled and went on his way. The blind man never knew but his new sign read “TODAY IS SPRING AND I CANNOT SEE IT". Change your strategy when something does not go your way and you'll see it will probably be for the best. Have faith that every change is best for our lives. "STRESS MANAGEMENT". A lecturer was giving a lecture to his student on”stress management". He raised a glass of water and asked the audience, "How heavy do you think this glass of water is?" The students' answers ranged from 20g to 500gm. It does not matter on the absolute weight. It depends on how long you hold it. If I hold it for a minute, it is OK. If I hold it for an hour, I will have an ache in my right arm. If I hold it for a day, you will have to call an ambulance. It is the exact same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes." "If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, we will not be able to carry on, the burden becoming increasingly heavier." "What you have to do is to put the glass down, rest for a while before holding it up again." We have to put down the burden periodically, so that we can be refreshed and are able to carry on. So before you return home from work tonight, put down the burden of work. Don't carry it back home. You can pick it up tomorrow. Whatever burdens you are having now on your shoulders, let it down for a moment if you can. Pick it up again later when you have rested... Rest and relax. Life is short, enjoy it!! PRAISE THE LORD There was a little old lady who would come out on the steps of her front porch every morning, raise her arms to the sky and shout, "Praise the Lord." One day, an atheist moved into the house next door. Over time he became irritated with the little old lady, so every morning he would step out onto his front porch and yell after her, "There is no Lord." Time passes, with the two of them carrying on this way every day. 7
  • 8. One morning, in the middle of winter, the little old lady stepped onto her front porch and shouted, "Praise the Lord! Lord, I have no food and I am starving. Please provide for me, oh Lord." The next morning she stepped onto her porch and there were two huge bags of groceries sitting there. "Praise the Lord," she cried out. "He has provided groceries for me." The atheist jumped out of the hedges and shouted, "There is no Lord; I bought those groceries." The little old lady threw her arms into the air and shouted, Praise the Lord; He has provided me with groceries, and he made the devil pay for them." POWER OF FAITH The fields were parched and brown from lack of rain, and the crops lay wilting from thirst. People were anxious and irritable as they searched the sky for any sign of relief. Days turned into arid weeks. No rain came. The ministers of the local churches called for an hour of prayer in the town square the following Saturday. They requested that everyone bring an object of faith for inspiration. At high noon on the appointed Saturday the townspeople turned out en-masse filling the square with anxious faces and hopeful hearts. The ministers were touched to see the variety of objects clutched in prayerful hands -holy books, crosses, rosaries. When the hour ended, as if on magical command, a soft rain began to fall. Cheers swept the crowd as they held their treasured objects high in gratitude and praise. From the middle of the crowd one faith symbol seemed to overshadow all the others a small nine-year-old child had brought an umbrella. When you do something in life, have complete faith that you will definitely succeed. Never do anything half-mindedly. Faith is a great foundation to build your life. VALUE OF GOODNESS... A young man was getting ready to graduate from college. For many months he had admired a beautiful sports car in a dealer's showroom, and knowing his father could well afford it, he told him that was all he wanted. As Graduation Day approached, the young man awaited signs that his father had purchased the car. Finally, on the morning of his graduation, his father called him into his private study. His father told him how proud he was to have such a fine son, and told him how much he loved him. He handed his son a beautiful wrapped gift box. Curious, but somewhat disappointed, the young man opened the box and found a lovely, leather-bound Bible, with the young man's name embossed in gold. Angrily, he raised his voice to his father and said, "With all your money you give me a Bible?" He then stormed out of the house, leaving the Bible. Many years passed and the young man was very successful in business. He had a beautiful home and a wonderful family, but realizing his father was very old, he thought perhaps he should go to see him. He had not seen him since that graduation day. Before he could make the arrangements, he received a telegram telling him his father had passed away, and willed all of his possessions to his son. He needed to come home immediately and take care of things. 8
  • 9. When he arrived at his father's house, sudden sadness and regret filled his heart. He began to search through his father's important papers and saw the still new Bible, just as he had left it years ago. With tears, he opened the Bible and began to turn the pages. As he was reading, a car key dropped from the back of the Bible. It had a tag with the dealer's name, the same dealer who had the sports car he had desired. On the tag was the date of his graduation, and the words….."PAID IN FULL". How many times do we miss blessings because they are not packaged as we expected? Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; but remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sometimes we don't realize the good fortune we have or we could have because we expect "the packaging" to be different. What may appear as bad fortune may in fact be the door that is just waiting to be opened. ALWAYS STAY… POSITIVE! Once upon a time there was a bunch of baby frogs....… participating in a competition.The target was to get to the top of a high tower. A crowd of people had gathered to observe the race and encourage the participants..... The start shot rang out....... Quite honestly, None of the onlookers believed that the baby frogs could actually accomplish getting to the top of the tower. Words like "Åh, it’s too difficult!!! They’ll never reach the top." Or "Not a chance... the tower is too high!" One by one some of the baby frogs fell off…... Except those who fastly climbed higher and higher.. The crowd kept on yelling "It’s too difficult. Nobody is going to make it!" More baby frogs became tired and gave up... ...But one kept going higher and higher..... He was not about giving up! At the end everybody had given up, except the one determined to reach the top! All the other participants naturally wanted to know how he had managed to do what none of thm others had been able to do! One competitor asked thm winner, what was his secret? The truth was....... The winner was deaf!!!! The lesson to be learned - Don’t ever listen to people who are negative and pessimistic... … they will deprive you of your loveliest dreams and wishes you carry in your heart! Always be aware of the power of words, as everyting you hear and read will interfere with your actions! Therefore - Always stay… POSITIVE! And most of all Turn a deaf ear when people tell you, that you cannot achieve your dreams! 9
  • 10. Always believe - You can make it! GLASS OF MILK! I always imagine kindness returned like this a glass of milk One day, a poor boy who was selling goods from door to door to pay his way through school, found he had only one thin dime left, and he was hungry. He decided he would ask for a meal at the next house. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. Instead of a meal he asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry so brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly, and then asked, "How much do I owe you?" "You don't owe me anything," she replied. "Mother has taught us never to accept pay for a kindness." He said....."Then I thank you from my heart." Year's later that young woman became critically ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where they called in specialists to study her rare disease. Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately he rose and went down the hall of the hospital to her room. Dressed in his doctor's gown he went in to see her. He recognized her at once. He went back to the consultation room determined to do his best to save her life. From that day he gave special attention to the case. After a long struggle, the battle was won. Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval. He looked at it, and then wrote something on the edge and the bill was sent to her room. She feared to open it, for she was sure it would take the rest of her life to pay for it all. Finally she looked, and something caught her attention on the side of the bill. She read these words..... "Paid in full with one glass of milk" Signed, Dr. Howard Kelly. Tears of joy flooded her eyes as her happy heart prayed "Thank You, God that your love has spread abroad through human hearts and hands." "To fix a broken life, use the tools of the heart." MONKEY & THE HATSELLER. There was once a hat-seller who passed by a forest decided to take a nap under one of the trees, so he left his whole basket of hats by the side. A few hours later, he woke up by some sounds. The next thing he realised was that all his hats were gone. He heard some monkeys on the tree and so he looked up. To his surprise, the tree was full of monkeys and they had taken all his hats. An idea came to him, he took his hat and throws it on the floor and the monkeys do that too. So he finally managed to get all his hats back. FACT OF THE LIFE - BEST SCHOOLING IS IN THE FEETS OF SENIORS If you think you have read this before...! ...................... Read on!!! 10
  • 11. Fifty years later, his grandson, Jack, also became a hat -seller and had heard this monkey story from his grandfather. One day, just like his grandfather, he passed by the same forest, it was very hot, and he took a nap under the same tree and left the hats on the floor. He woke up and realised that all his hats were one. He looked up and realised that the monkeys had taken all the hats. He remembered his grand father's words, started scratching his head and the monkeys follow. He took down his hat and fanned himself and again the monkeys followed. Now, very convinced of his grandfather's idea, JACK threw his hat on the floor but to his surprise, the monkeys still held on to all the hats. Then one monkey climbed down the tree, grabbed the hat on the floor, gave him a slap and said “You think only you have a grandfather? Morale: Never underestimate or take anyone for granted & never think that the opposite person is feeble or weak. NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE This is a real story that happened between the customer of General Motors and its Customer-Care Executive. A complaint was received by the Pontiac Division of General Motors "This is the second time I have written to you, and I don't blame you for not answering me, because I sounded crazy, but it is a fact that we have a tradition in our family of Ice- Cream for dessert after dinner each night. But the kind of ice cream varies so, every night, after we’ve eaten the whole family votes on which kind of ice cream we should have and I drive down to the store to get it. It's also a fact that I recently purchased a new Pontiac and since then my trips to the store have created a problem. You see, every time I buy a vanilla ice-cream, when I start back from the store my car won't start. If I get any other kind of ice cream, the car starts just fine. I want you to know I'm serious about this! ; question, no matter how silly it sounds "What is there about a Pontiac that makes it not start when I get vanilla ice cream, and easy to start whenever I get any other kind?" The Pontiac President was understandably skeptical about the letter, but sent an Engineer to check it out anyway. The latter was surprised to be greeted by a successful, obviously well educated man in a fine neighborhood. He had arranged to meet the man just after dinnertime, so the two hopped into the car and drove to the ice cream store. It was vanilla ice cream that night and, sure enough, after they came back to the car, it wouldn't start. The Engineer returned for three more nights. The first night, they got chocolate. The car started. The second night, he got strawberry. The car started. The third night he ordered vanilla. The car failed to start. Now the Engineer, being a logical man, refused to believe that this man's car was allergic to vanilla ice cream. He arranged, therefore, to continue his visits for as long as it took to solve the problem. And toward this end he began to take notes he jotted down all sorts of data time of day, type of gas uses, time to drive back and forth etc. In a short time, he had a clue the man 11
  • 12. took less time to buy vanilla than any other flavor. Why? The answer was in the layout of the store. Vanilla, being the most popular flavor, was in a separate case at the front of the store for quick pickup. All the other flavors were kept in the back of the store at a different counter where it took considerably longer to check out the flavor. Now, the question for the Engineer was why the car wouldn't start when it took less time. Once time became problem - not the vanilla ice cream Eureka!!!! The engineer quickly came up with the answer”vapour lock". It was happening every night; but the extra time taken to get the other flavors allowed the engine to cool down sufficiently to start. When the man got vanilla, the engine was still too hot for the vapour lock to dissipate. Remember, Even crazy looking problems are sometimes real and all problems seem to be simple only when we find the solution with a cool thinking. Don't just say its "IMPOSSIBLE" without putting a sincere effort... Observe the word "IMPOSSIBLE" carefully... Looking closer you will see, "I'M POSSIBLE"... What really matters is your attitude and your perception. NEVER GIVE-UP One day a farmer's donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do. Finally he decided the animal was old and the well needed to be covered up anyway; it just wasn't worth it to retrieve the donkey. He invited all his neighbors to come over and help him. They all grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the donkey realised what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone's amazement, he quieted down. A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well and was astonished at what he saw. With every shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. He would shake it off and take a step up. As the farmer's neighbours continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and trotted off! THE MORAL Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. The trick to getting out of the well is to shake it off and take a step up. Each of our troubles is a stepping-stone. We can get out of the deepest wells just by not stopping, never giving up! Shake it off and take a step up! Remember the five simple rules to be happy: Free your heart from hatred. Free your mind from worries. Live simply. Give more. Expect less... HAIR AND THE TORTOISE Everyone knows the story of Hare & Tortoise, isn’t it? But here is a Lesson for Survival Here is the story of Hare and the Tortoise revisited In Today's Context 12
  • 13. A hare and a tortoise live in Ahmedabad. They are good friends and like all good friends, sometimes have a dig at each other. One day, in a light mood the hare ridiculed the tortoise for his slow pace. The tortoise reacted by challenging the hare for a race between Paldi to Navarangpura....and you all know what happens in this story..... Lesson Learnt "Slow and steady wins the race." However, the story does not end here..... The hare goes home and soon understands that complacency and overconfidence were the reasons of his defeat. He vows not to repeat the mistake again. He then invites the tortoise for another race. The tortoise agrees to his friend's request. They meet at the appointed day and time at the starting point. The race starts. This time the hare dashes off to the finishing line without taking a break and wins the race comfortably. Lesson Learnt "Fast and Quick Learner wins the race" & still the story does not end here..... The tortoise goes home and thinks hard. He was aware that the hare couldn't be defeated in speed. He then ponders over his core competence. At last he finds a solution and invites the hare to another race. This time the course is changed. It is from Paldi to Airport. The hare agrees. At the appointed day and time the two meet at the start line and the race begins. The hare dashes off like a flash. Soon he arrives at the banks of river Sabarmati and is overwhelmed by a sense of dejection as he did not know how to swim. The tortoise comes to the bank, looks at the hare with sympathy and coolly gets into the water. He swims to the other side goes to the airport and comes back. Lesson Learnt "Core competence wins the race." Yet again the story extends to its finale..... Both the friends decide it was enough of racing against each other. Why not think hard and find a way by which they together could travel from Paldi to airport at the minimum possible time. At the end of a brain storming session they come out with a solution and decide to try it out the next morning. At the appointed time they meet at the starting line. The tortoise sits on the back of the hare. The hare dashes off form Paldi to the banks of Sabarmati. There the hare gets on the back of the tortoise and the tortoise swiftly crosses the river. On reaching the other side the tortoise again sits on the back of the hare. The hare runs as fast as he can to the airport. Thus they both reach airport in the fastest possible time. Lesson Learnt "Innovation, Smart Thinking and team work wins the race" POWER OF PRAYER Diane, a young university student, was home for the summer. She had gone to visit some friends one evening and time passed quickly as each shared their various experiences of the past year. She ended up staying longer than planned, and had to walk home alone. 13
  • 14. She wasn't afraid because it was a small town and she lived only a few blocks away. As she walked along under the tall elm trees, Diane asked God to keep her safe from harm and danger. When she reached the alley, which was a short cut to her house, she decided to take it. However, halfway down the alley she noticed a man standing at the end as though he were waiting for her. She became uneasy and began to pray, asking for God's protection. Instantly a comforting feeling of quietness and security wrapped around her, she felt as though someone was walking with her. When she reached the end of the alley, she walked right past the man and arrived home safely. The following day, she read in the newspaper that a young girl had been raped in the same alley just twenty minutes after she had been there. Feeling overwhelmed by this tragedy and the fact that it could have been her, she began to weep. Thanking the Lord for her safety and to help this young woman, she decided to go to the police station. She felt she could recognize the man, so she told them her story. The police asked her if she would be willing to look at a lineup to see if she could identify him. She agreed and immediately pointed out the man she had seen in the alley the night before. When the man was told he had been identified, he immediately broke down and confessed. The officer thanked Diane for her bravery and asked if there was anything they could do for her. She asked if they would ask the man one question. Diane was curious as to why he had not attacked her. When the policeman asked him, he answered, "Because she wasn't alone. She had two tall men walking on either side of her.” Moral of the story.... Don't underestimate the power of Prayer! PERSPECTIVE DOES MATTER One day a father of a very wealthy family took his son on a trip to the country with the firm purpose of showing his son how poor people live. They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family. On their return from their trip, the father asked his son, How was the trip?" "It was great, Dad." "Did you see how poor people live?" the father asked. "Oh yeah," said the son. "So, tell me, what you learned from the trip?" asked the father. The son answered, "I saw that we have one dog and they had four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no end. We have imported lanterns in our garden and they have the stars at night. Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon. We have a small piece of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond our sight. We have servants who serve us, but they serve others. We buy our food, but they grow theirs. We have walls around our property to protect us; they have friends to protect them." The boy's father was speechless. Then his son added, "Thanks, Dad, for showing me how poor we are." Isn't perspective a wonderful thing? Makes you wonder what would happen if we all gave thanks for everything we have, instead of worrying about what we don't have. Appreciate every single thing you have, every single day one day at a time. 14
  • 15. UNCONDITIONAL LOVE A story is told about a soldier who was finally coming home after having fought in Vietnam. He called his parents from San Francisco. "Mom and Dad, I'm coming home, but I've a favor to ask. I have a friend I'd like to bring home with Me." "Sure," they replied, "we'd love to meet him." "There's something you should know the son continued, "he was hurt pretty badly in the fighting. He stepped on a land mind and lost an arm and a leg. He has nowhere else to go, and I want him to come live with us." "I'm sorry to hear that, son. Maybe we can help him find somewhere to live." "No, Mom and Dad, I want him to live with us." "Son," said the father, "You don't know what you're asking. Someone with such a handicap would be a terrible burden on us. We have our own lives to live, and we can't let something like this interfere with our lives. I think you should just come home and forget about this guy. He'll find a way to live on his own." At that point, the son hung up the phone. The parents heard nothing more from him. A few days later, however, they received a call from the San Francisco police. Their son had died after falling from a building, they were told. The police believed it was suicide. The grief-stricken parents flew to San Francisco and were taken to the city morgue to identify the body of their son. They recognized him, but to their horror they also discovered something they didn't know, their son had only one arm and one leg. The parents in this story are like many of us. We find it easy to love those who are good-looking or fun to have around, but we don't like people who inconvenience us or make us feel uncomfortable. We would rather stay away from people who aren't as healthy, beautiful, or smart as we are. Thankfully, there's someone who won't treat us that way. Someone who loves us with an unconditional love that welcomes us into the forever family, regardless of how messed up we are. Tonight, before you tuck yourself in for the night, say a little prayer that God will give you the strength you need to accept people as they are, and to help us all be more understanding of those who are different from us!!! There's a miracle called Friendship that dwells in the heart you don't know how it happens or when it gets started but you know the special lift it always brings and you realize that Friendship Is God's most precious gift! Friends are a very rare jewel, indeed. They make you smile and encourage you to succeed they lend an ear, they share a word of praise, and they always want to open their hearts to us. ATTITUDE IS A CHOICE 15
  • 16. The 92-year-old, petite, well-poised and proud lady, was fully dressed each morning by eight o'clock. Her hair fashionably coiffed and makeup perfectly applied, even though she is legally blind, she was moving to a nursing home today. Her husband of 70 years had recently passed away, making the move necessary. After many hours of waiting patiently in the lobby of the nursing home, she smiled sweetly when told her room was ready. As she maneuvered her walker to the elevator, I provided a visual description of her tiny room, including the eyelet sheets that had been hung on her window. "I love it," she stated with the enthusiasm of an eight-year-old having just been presented with a new puppy. "Mrs. Jones, you haven't seen the room .... Just wait." "That doesn't have anything to do with it," she replied. "Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my room or not doesn't depend on how the furniture is arranged...it's how I arrange my mind. I already decided to love it ..." "It's a decision I make every morning when I wake up. I have a choice; I can spend the day in bed recounting the difficulty I have with the parts of my body that no longer work, or get out of bed and be thankful for the ones that do." Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open I'll focus on the new day and all the happy memories I've stored away ... just for this time in my life. Old age is like a bank account ... you withdraw from what you've put in. So, my advice to you would be to deposit a lot of happiness in the bank account of memories. Thank you for your part in filling my Memory bank. I am still depositing." Remember the five simple rules to be happy 1. Free your heart from hatred. 2. Free your mind from worries. 3. Live simply. 4. Give more. 5. Expect less YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT GOD MAY SEND A woman received a phone call that her daughter was very sick with a fever. She left work and stopped by the pharmacy for some medication for her daughter. She returned to her car to find she had locked her keys inside. She had to get home to her sick daughter, and didn't know what to do. She called her home to the baby sitter and was told her daughter was getting worse. The baby-sitter said, "You might find a coat hanger and use that to open the door." 16
  • 17. The woman found an old rusty coat hanger on the ground, as if someone else had locked their keys in their car. Then she looked at the hanger and said, "I don't know how to use this." She bowed her head and asked God for help. An old car pulled up, driven by a dirty, greasy, bearded man with a biker skull rag on his head. The woman thought, "Great, God. This is what you sent to help me????" But she was desperate, and thankful. The man got out of his car and asked if he could help. She said "Yes, my daughter is very sick I must get home to her. Please, can you use this hanger to unlock my car?" He said "SURE." He walked over to the car and in seconds the car was opened. She hugged the man and through her tears she said, "THANK YOU SO MUCH... you are a very nice man." The man replied, "Lady, I am not a nice man. I just got out of prison for car theft." The woman hugged the man again and cried out loud..... "THANK YOU GOD FOR SENDING ME A PROFESSIONAL!” .... Just see how God moves... IMPORTANCE OF SOUL Once upon a time... There was a rich King who had 4 wives. He loved the 4th wife the most and adorned her with rich robes and treated her to the finest of delicacies. He gave her nothing but the best. He also loved the 3rd wife very much and was always showing her off to neighboring kingdoms. However, he feared that one day she would leave him for another. He also loved his 2nd wife. She was his confidante and was always kind, considerate and patient with him. Whenever the King faced a problem, he could confide in her to help him get through the difficult times. The King's 1st wife was a very loyal partner and had made great contributions in maintaining his wealth and kingdom. However, he did not love the first wife and although she loved him deeply, he hardly took notice of her. One day, the King fell ill and he knew his time was short. He thought of his luxurious life and pondered, "I now have 4 wives with me, but when I die, I'll be all alone. Thus, he asked the 4th wife, "I have loved you the most, endowed you with the finest clothing and showered great care over you. Now that I'm dying, will you follow me and keep me company?" "No way!" replied the 4th wife and she walked away without another word. Her answer cut like a sharp knife right into his heart. The sad King then asked the 3rd wife, "I have loved you all my life. Now that I'm dying, will you follow me and keep me company?" "No!" replied the 3rd wife. "Life is too good! When you die, I'm going to remarry!" His heart sank and turned cold. 17
  • 18. He then asked the 2nd wife, "I have always turned to you for help and you've always been there for me. When I die, will you follow me and keep me company?" "I'm sorry, I can't help you out this time!" replied the 2nd wife. "At the very most, I can only send you to your grave." Her answer came like a bolt of thunder and the King was devastated. Then a voice called out: "I'll leave with you and follow you no matter where you go." The King looked up and there was his first wife. She was so skinny, she suffered from malnutrition. Greatly grieved, the King said, "I should have taken much better care of you when I had the chance!" In Truth, we all have 4 wives in our lives... Our 4th wife is our body. No matter how much time and effort we lavish in making it look good, it'll leave us when we die. Our 3rd wife is our possessions, status and wealth. When we die, it will all go to others. Our 2nd wife is our family and friends. No matter how much they have been there for us, the furthest they can stay by us is up to the grave. And our 1st wife is our Soul, often neglected in pursuit of wealth, power and pleasures of the ego. However, our Soul is the only thing that will follow us wherever we go. So cultivate, strengthen and cherish it now! It is your greatest gift to offer the world. Let it Shine! A BOX OF KISSES The story goes that some time ago, a man punished his 3-year-old daughter for wasting a roll of gold wrapping paper. Money was tight and he was furious when the child tried to decorate a box. Nevertheless, the little girl brought the gift to her father the next morning and said, "This is for you, Daddy." He was embarrassed by his earlier overreaction, but his anger flared again when he found the box was empty. He yelled at her,” Don’t you know when you give someone a present, there's supposed to be something inside it? The little girl looked up at him with tears in her eyes and said, "Oh, Daddy, it's not empty, I blew kisses into the box. All for you, Daddy." The father was crushed. He put his arms around his little girl, and he begged for her forgiveness. An accident took the life of the child only a short time later and it is told that the man kept that gold box by his bed for many years and whenever he was discouraged, he would take out an imaginary kiss and remember the love of the child who had put it there. TELL THEM, BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE... 18
  • 19. One day a teacher asked her students to list the names of the other students in the room on two sheets of paper, leaving a space between each name. Then she told them to think of the nicest thing they could say about each of their classmates and write it down. It took the remainder of the class period to finish their assignment, and as the students left the room, each one handed in the papers. That Saturday, the teacher wrote down the name of each student on a separate sheet of paper, and listed what everyone else had said about that individual. On Monday she gave each student his or her list. Before long, the entire class was smiling. "Really?" she heard whispered. "I never knew that I meant anything to anyone!" and, "I didn't know others liked me so much." were most of the comments. No one ever mentioned those papers in class again. She never knew if they discussed them after class or with their parents, but it didn't matter. The exercise had accomplished its purpose. The students were happy with themselves and one another. That group of students moved on. Several years later, one of the students was killed in Viet Nam and his teacher attended the funeral of that special student. She had never seen a serviceman in a military coffin before. He looked so handsome, so mature. The church was packed with his friends. One by one those who loved him took a last walk by the coffin. The teacher was the last one to bless the coffin. As she stood there, one of the soldiers who acted as pallbearer came up to her. "Were you Mark's math teacher?" he asked. She nodded: "yes." Then he said: "Mark talked about you a lot." After the funeral, most of Mark's former classmates went together to a luncheon. Mark's mother and father were there, obviously waiting to speak with his teacher. "We want to show you something," his father said, taking a wallet out of his pocket. "They found this on Mark when he was killed. We thought you might recognize it." Opening the billfold, he carefully removed two worn pieces of notebook paper that had obviously been taped, folded and refolded many times. The teacher knew without looking that the papers were the ones on which she had listed all the good things each of Mark's classmates had said about him. "Thank you so much for doing that," Mark's mother said. "As you can see, Mark treasured it." All of Mark's former classmates started to gather around. Charlie smiled rather sheepishly and said, "I still have my list. It's in the top drawer of my desk at home." Chuck's wife said, "Chuck asked me to put his in our wedding album." "I have mine too," Marilyn said. "It's in my diary." Then Vicki, another classmate, reached into her pocketbook, took out her wallet and showed her worn and frazzled list to the group. "I carry this with me at all times," Vicki said and without batting an eyelash, she continued: "I think we all saved our lists." That's when the teacher finally sat down and cried. She cried for Mark and for all his friends who would never see him again. The density of people in society is so thick that we forget that life will end one day. And we don't know when that one day will be. So please, tell the people you love and care for, that they are special and important. Tell them, before it is too late. DECISION MAKING The story given below is quite interesting and really gives us an insight into DECISION MAKING. 19
  • 20. Which one will you choose? A group of children were playing near two railway tracks, one still in use while the other disused. Only one child played on the disused track, the rest on the operational track. The train came, and you were just beside the track interchange. You could make the train change its course to the disused track and save most of the kids. However, that would also mean the lone child playing by the disused track would be sacrificed. Or would you rather let the train go its way? Let's take a pause to think what kind of decision we could make............... Most people might choose to divert the course of the train, and sacrifice only one child. You might think the same way, I guess. Exactly, I thought the same way initially because to save most of the children at the expense of only one child was rational decision most people would make, morally and emotionally. But, have you ever thought that the child choosing to play on the disused track had in fact made the right decision to play at a safe place? Nevertheless, he had to be sacrificed because of his ignorant friends who chose to play where the danger was. This kind of dilemma happens around us everyday. In the office, community, in politics and especially in a democratic society, the minority is often sacrificed for the interest of the majority, no matter how foolish or ignorant the majority are, and how farsighted and knowledgeable the minority are. The child who chose not to play with the rest on the operational track was sidelined. And in the case he was sacrificed, no one would shed a tear for him. Some One said he would not try to change the course of the train because he believed that the kids playing on the operational track should have known very well that track was still in use, and that they should have run away if they heard the train's sirens. If the train was diverted, that lone child would definitely die because he never thought the train could come over to that track! Moreover, that track was not in use probably because it was not safe. If the train was diverted to the track, we could put the lives of all passengers on board at stake! And in your attempt to save a few kids by sacrificing one child, you might end up sacrificing hundreds of people to save these few kids. 20
  • 21. While we are all aware that life is full of tough decisions that need to be made, we may not realize that hasty decisions may not always be the right one. "Remember that what's right isn't always popular...and what's popular isn't always right." Everybody makes mistakes; that's why they put erasers on pencils. THINK DIFFERENTLY. Case - I One of the most memorable case studies on Japanese management was the case of the empty soap box, which happened in one of Japan's cosmetics companies. The company received a complaint that a consumer had bought a soap box that was empty. Immediately the authorities isolated the problem to the assembly line, which transported all the packaged boxes of soap to the delivery department. For some reason, one soap box went through the assembly line empty. Management asked its engineers to solve the problem. Post-haste, the engineers worked hard to devise an X-ray machine with high- resolution monitors manned by two people to watch all the soap boxes that passed through the line to make sure they were not empty. But when the employee in another company was posed with the same problem, he came out with another solution. He bought an industrial electric fan and pointed it at the assembly line. He switched the fan on, and as each soap box passed the fan, it simply blew the empty boxes out of the line. Case - II When Americans sent astronauts to space, they realised that the normal ball point pens could not be used in space. This was because due to lack of gravitational force and low pressure, the ink would leak from the refill. Americans took this as a challenge and decided to fix this problem. They formed a strong team of 10 scientists to work on the solution...This team worked for 1 year on this project with an overall expense of $6 Bn. What they came out with was a unique state of the art "Pen" which could even work at very low pressures and even at zero gravity. Even Russians faced the same problem when they sent their astronauts in space..........They used Pencils. Most of the times complicated problems have very simple solutions....It just requires you to think differently. HOW MUCH MONEY DO YOU MAKE IN AN HOUR? A man came home from work late, tired and irritated, to find his 5-year old son waiting for him at the door. "Daddy, May I ask you a question?” the son asked. "Yeah sure, what is it?" "Daddy, how much do you make in an hour?" 21
  • 22. "That's none of your business. Why do you ask such a thing?” the man said angrily. "I just want to know. Please tell me, how much do you make in an hour?" the little boy pleaded again. "If you must know, I make Rs 35 an hour." "Oh", the little boy replied, with his head down. Then suddenly looking up he said, "Daddy, may I please borrow Rs 10?" The father was furious and growling angrily at him said, "If the only reason you asked that is so that you can borrow some money to buy a silly toy or some other nonsense, then you march yourself straight to your room and go to bed. I work long hard hours everyday and don't have time for such childish behavior." The little boy sadly and quietly went to his room and shut the door. After about an hour or so, the man's anger had calmed down, and he started to think that he might have been a little harsh on his son. May be there was something that he really wanted to buy with those 10 Rupees. The man went to the door of the little boy's room and opened the door. "Are you asleep, son?" he asked. "No Daddy, I'm awake," replied the boy. "I've been thinking, maybe I was too hard on your earlier," said the man. "It's been a long long day for me, and I simply took out my aggravation over you. Here's that 10 Rs, you had asked for." The little boy sat straight up, smiling said, "Oh! Thank you Thank you Daddy!" He yelled for a while and then reaching under his pillow he pulled out some more money. Father seeing this, that the boy already had some money got angry again. The son was slowly counting out all the money that he had now. The father grumbled, "Why did you want more money, for you already had some?" "Because I didn't have enough, but now I do," the little boy replied meekishly. He continued saying "Daddy, I now have Rs.35. Can I buy an hour of your time? Please do come home early tomorrow. I wish for I could have dinner with you." THINK BEFORE YOUR LEAP One fine day, a bus driver went to the bus garage, started his bus, and drove off along the route. No problems for the first few stops-a few People got on, a few got off, and things went generally well. At the next stop, however, a big hulk of a guy got on. Six feet eight, Built like a wrestler, arms hanging down to the ground. He glared at the Driver and said, "Big John doesn't pay!" and sat down at the back. Did I mention that the driver was five feet three, thin, and basically meek? Well, he was. Naturally, he didn't argue with Big John, but he wasn't happy about it. The next day the same thing happened-Big John got on again, made a show of refusing to pay, and sat down. And the next day, and the one after that, and so forth. This grated on the bus driver, who started losing sleep over the way Big John was taking advantage of him. 22
  • 23. Finally he could stand it no longer. He signed up for body building courses, karate, judo, and all that good stuff. By the end of the summer, he had become quite strong; what's more, he felt really good about himself. So on the next Monday, when Big John once again got on the bus and said, "Big John doesn't pay!" the driver stood up, glared back at the passenger, and screamed, "And why not?" With a surprised look on his face, Big John replied, "Big John has a Bus pass." Moral of the story: "Be sure there is a problem in the first place before working hard to solve one." 'PUT THE GLASS DOWN TODAY Professor began his class by holding up a glass with some water in it. he held it up for all to see & asked the students,' How much do you think this glass weighs?' '50gms!' .... '100gms!' ......'125gms' ......the students answered. 'I really don't know unless I weigh it,' said the professor, 'but, my question is: What would happen if I held it up like this for a few minutes?' 'Nothing' the students said. 'Ok what would happen if I held it up like this for an hour?' the professor asked. 'Your arm would begin to ache' said one of the students. 'You're right, now what would happen if I held it for a day?' 'Your arm could go numb, you might have severe muscle stress & paralysis & have to go to hospital for sure!' ventured another student & all the students laughed. Very good. But during all this, did the weight of the glass change?’ asked the professor. 'No' 'Then what caused the arm ache & the muscle stress?' The students were puzzled. 'Put the glass down!' said one of the students. 'Exactly!' said the professor.' Life's problems are something like this. Hold it for a few minutes in your head & they seem OK. Think of them for a long time & they begin to ache. Hold it even longer & they begin to paralyze you. You will not be able to do anything. It's important to think of the challenges (problems) in your life, but EVEN MORE IMPORTANT to 'put them down' at the end of every day before you go to sleep. That way, you are not stressed, you wake up every day fresh & strong & can handle any issue, any challenge that comes your way!' Remember friend to 'PUT THE GLASS DOWN TODAY! ' FORGIVE & LOVE OTHERS A kindergarten teacher asked each child in the class to bring along a plastic bag containing a few potatoes. Each potato will be given a name of a person that the child hates, so the number of potatoes that a child will put in his/her plastic bag will depend on the number of people he/she hates. So on Monday, every child brought some potatoes with the name of the people he/she hated. Some had two potatoes; some had three potatoes, while some up to five potatoes. The teacher then told the children to carry with them the potatoes in the plastic bag wherever they go (even to the toilet) for the whole week. 23
  • 24. As days passed by, and the children started to complain due to the unpleasant smell let out by the rotten potatoes. Besides, those potatoes they also had to carry bags. On Friday, the children were relieved. The teacher asked: "How did you feel while carrying the potatoes with you for the whole week?" The children let out their frustrations and started complaining of the trouble that they had to go through having to carry the heavy and smelly potatoes wherever they go. Then the teacher explained: "This is exactly what happens when you carry your hatred for somebody inside your heart. The stench of hatred will contaminate your heart and you will carry it with you wherever you go. If we cannot tolerate the smell of rotten potatoes for just one week, can you imagine what is it like to have the stench of hatred in our heart for our lifetime? Forgiving others is the best attitude to take. Try to love others even if you don't like them." THE MOST IMPORTANT PART My mother used to ask me what the most important part of the body is. Through the years I would take a guess at what I thought was the correct answer. When I was younger, I thought sound was very important to us as humans, so I said, "My ears, Mommy." She said, 'No. Many people are deaf. But you keep thinking about it and I will ask you again soon.' Several years passed before she asked me again. Since making my first attempt, I had contemplated the correct answer. So this time I told her, 'Mommy, sight is very important to everybody, so it must be our eyes.' She looked at me and told me, 'You are learning fast, but the answer is not correct because there are many people who are blind.' Stumped again, I continued my quest for knowledge and over the years, Mother asked me a couple more times and always her answer was 'No, but you are getting smarter every year, my child.' Then last year, my Grandpa died. Everybody was hurt. Everybody was crying. Even my father cried. My Mom looked at me when it was our turn to say our final good-bye to Grandpa. She asked me, 'Do you know the most important body part yet, my dear?' I was shocked when she asked me this now. I always thought this was a game between her and me. She saw the confusion on my face and told me. 'This question is very important. It shows that you have really lived your life. For every body part you gave me in the past, I have told you were wrong and I have given you an example why. But today is the day you need to learn this important lesson. 24
  • 25. She looked down at me as only a mother can. I saw her eyes well up with tears. She said, 'My dear, the most important body part is your shoulder' I asked, 'Is it because it holds up your head?' She replied, 'No, it is because it can hold the head of a friend or loved one when they cry. Everybody, need a shoulder to cry on sometime in life, my dear. I only hope that you have enough love and friends that you will have a shoulder to cry on when you need it.' Then and there I knew the most important body part is not a selfish one. It is sympathetic to the pain of others MOST COMPLEX PROBLEMS DO HAVE A SOLUTION Many years ago in a small Indian village; a farmer had the misfortune of owing a large sum of money to a village moneylender. The moneylender, who was old and ugly, fancied the farmer's beautiful daughter. So he proposed a bargain. He said he would forgo the farmer's debt if he could marry his daughter. Both the farmer and his daughter were horrified by the proposal. So the cunning money-lender suggested that they let providence decide the matter. He told them that he would put a black pebble and a white pebble into an empty money bag. Then the girl would have to pick one pebble from the bag. 1) If she picked the black pebble, she would become his wife and her father's debt would be forgiven. 2) If she picked the white pebble she need not marry him and her father's debt would still be forgiven. 3) But if she refused to pick a pebble, her father would be thrown into jail. They were standing on a pebble strewn path in the farmer's field. As they talked, the moneylender bent over to pick up two pebbles. As he picked them up, the sharp-eyed girl noticed that he had picked up two black pebbles and put them into the bag. He then asked the girl to pick a pebble from the bag. Now, imagine that you were standing in the field. What would you have done if you were the girl? If you had to advise her, what would you have told her? Careful analysis would produce three possibilities: 1. The girl should refuse to take a pebble. 2. The girl should show that there were two black pebbles in the bag and expose the money-lender as a cheat. 25
  • 26. 3. The girl should pick a black pebble and sacrifice herself in order to save her father from his debt and imprisonment. Take a moment to ponder over the story. The above story is used with the hope that it will make us appreciate the difference between lateral and logical thinking. The girl's dilemma cannot be solved with traditional logical thinking. Think of the consequences if she chooses the above logical answers. What would you recommend to the Girl to do? Scroll down if you give up............... Well, here is what she did.... The girl put her hand into the moneybag and drew out a pebble. Without looking at it, she fumbled and let it fall onto the pebble-strewn path where it immediately became lost among all the other pebbles. "Oh, how clumsy of me," she said. "But never mind, if you look into the bag for the one that is left, you will be able to tell which pebble I picked." Since the remaining pebble is black, it must be assumed that she had picked the white one. And since the money-lender dared not admit his dishonesty, the girl changed what seemed an impossible situation into an extremely advantageous one. MORAL OF THE STORY: Most complex problems do have a solution. It is only that we don't attempt to think. THE SOUP STORY An old friend of Nasruddin once came visiting and brought along a big chicken. Mullah’s wife cooked the chicken and they enjoyed the feast for dinner. The next morning, they had delicious chicken soup that Mullah’s wife prepared. The friend enjoyed his short stay with Mullah. The next day when he was leaving, Mullah returned his friend’s profuse thanks by thanking the latter for bringing the big chicken along. An hour after his friend had left Mullah heard a knock on the door. When he opened the door, a man introduced himself and quickly entered: “I am a friend of your friend who brought you that big chicken!” Reluctant to insult the friend of a friend, Mullah invited the man inside and asked him to stay back for lunch. They had some lovely chicken stew for lunch, which the man also enjoyed. Having eaten like a glutton, the man left thanking Mullah profusely for the tasty chicken. A couple of hours later, there was a knock on the door and Mullah beheld another stranger before him. “I am the friend of your friend’s friend,” the man smiled. 26
  • 27. Again, not wanting to turn away the friend of a friend’s friend, Mullah invited him inside and asked him to stay back for dinner. The man accepted hurriedly. He too feasted on some delicious chicken stew and left smacking his lips some time later. Barely had the man left, there was another knock and another stranger at the door! The friend-of-a-friend story all because of a chicken was now getting Mullah’s goat! “My house has been turned into an eating house!” Mullah muttered to himself as he permitted the man to enter. The next day too there was no respite as another man entered with the same tale: “I am a friend of the friend of the friend of the friend of the friend who had come here with a huge chicken!” Mullah smiled weakly and asked the man to come right in and have a meal. The man entered hurriedly, smacking his lips in anticipation of a tasty chicken meal. A few minutes later, a bowl of soup was placed before him. Just one sip told the man that this ‘soup’ was nothing but boiled water. “This is nothing but boiled water!” the man protested angrily. “Not at all!” Mullah smiled wickedly. “This is the soup of the soup of the soup of the soup of the soup of the soup of the chicken!” Moral of the story: When people take advantage of your generosity and hospitality, do not turn them away rudely. Instead, invite them in and serve them a lesson they will never forget for a long time to come – just as Mullah did by serving the soup of the soup of the soup…………. BE OBSERVANT Chaman and Jagan joined a wholesale company together just after graduation. Both worked very hard. After several years, the boss promoted Jagan to sales executive but Chaman remained a sales rep. One day Chaman could not take it anymore, tender resignation to the boss and complained the boss did not value hard working staff, but only promoted those who flattered him. The boss knew that Chaman worked very hard for the years, but in order to help Chaman realise the difference between him and Jagan, the boss asked Chaman to do the following. Go and find out anyone selling water melon in the market? Chaman returned and said yes. The boss asked how much per kg? Chaman went back to the market to ask and returned to inform boss the Rs.12 per kg. Boss told Chaman, I will ask Jagan the same question? Jagan went, returned and said, boss, only one person selling water melon. Rs.12 per kg, Rs.100 for 10 kg, he has inventory of 340 melons. On the table 58 melons, every melon weighs about 15 kg, bought from the South two days ago, they are fresh and red, good quality. 27
  • 28. Chaman was very impressed and realised the difference between himself and Jagan. He decided not to resign but to learn from Jagan. My dear friends, a more successful person is more observant, thinks more and understands in depth. For the same matter, a more successful person sees several years ahead, while we see only tomorrow. The difference between a year and a day is 365 times. Think! How far have you seen ahead in your life? How thoughtful in depth are you? EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION Jack and Max are walking from religious service. Jack wonders whether it would be all right to smoke while praying. Max replies, "Why don't you ask the Priest?" So Jack goes up to the Priest and asks, "Priest, may I smoke while I pray?" But the Priest says, "No, my son, you may not. That's utter disrespect to our religion." Jack goes back to his friend and tells him what the good Priest told him. Max says, "I'm not surprised. You asked the wrong question. Let me try." And so Max goes up to the Priest and asks, "Priest, may I pray while I smoke?" To which the Priest eagerly replies, "By all means, my son. By all means." Moral: The reply you get depends on the question you ask. For Example: Can I work on this project while I'm on vacation? WHAT IS FRIENDSHIP? 'How long will you be poring over that newspaper? Will you come here right away and make your darling daughter eat her food?' I tossed the paper away and rushed to the scene. My only daughter Sindu looked frightened. Tears were welling up in her eyes. In front of her was a bowl filled to its brim with Curd Rice. Sindu is a nice child, quite intelligent for her age. She has just turned eight. She particularly detested Curd Rice. My mother and my wife are orthodox, and believe firmly in the 'cooling effects' of Curd Rice! I cleared my throat, and picked up the bowl. "Sindu, darling, why don't you take a few mouthful of this Curd Rice? Just for Dad's sake, dear And, if you don't, your Mom will shout at me' I could sense my wife's scowl behind my back. Sindu softened a bit, and wiped her tears with the back of her hands. 'OK, Dad. I will eat not just a few mouthfuls, but the whole lot of this. But, you should...' Sindu hesitated. 'Dad, if I eat this entire Curd Rice, will you give me whatever I ask for?' 'Oh sure, darling'. 'Promise?' 'Promise'. I covered the pink soft hand extended by my daughter with mine, and clinched the deal. 28
  • 29. 'Ask Mom also to give a similar promise', my daughter insisted. My wife slapped her hand on Sindu's, muttering 'Promise', without any emotion. Now I became a bit anxious. 'Sindumma, you shouldn't insist on getting a computer or any such expensive items. Dad does not have that kind of money right now. OK?' 'No, Dad. I do not want anything expensive'. Slowly and painfully, she finished eating the whole quantity. I was silently angry with my wife and my mother for forcing my child eat something that she detested. After the ordeal was through, Sindu came to me with her eyes wide with expectation. All our attention was on her. 'Dad, I want to have my head shaved off, this Sunday!' was her demand! 'Atrocious!' shouted my wife, 'a girl child having her head shaved off? Impossible!’ 'Never in our family!' my mother rasped. 'She has been watching too much of television. Our culture is getting totally spoiled with these TV programs!' 'Sindumma, why don't you ask for something else? We will be sad seeing you with a clean-shaven head.' 'No, Dad. I do not want anything else', Sindu said with finality. 'Please, Sindu, why don't you try to understand our feelings?' I tried to plead with her 'Dad, you saw how difficult it was for me to eat that Curd Rice'. Sindu was in tears. 'And you promised to grant me whatever I ask for. Now, you are going back on your words. Was it not you who told me the story of King Harishchandra, and its moral that we should honor our promises no matter what?' It was time for me to call the shots. 'Our promise must be kept.' 'Are you out your mind?' chorused my mother and wife. 'No. If we go back on our promises, she will never learn to honor her own. Sindu, your wish will be fulfilled.' With her head clean-shaven, Sindu had a round-face, and her eyes looked big & beautiful. On Monday morning, I dropped her at her school. It was a sight to watch my hairless Sindu walking towards her classroom. She turned around and waved. I waved back with a smile. Just then, a boy alighted from a car, and shouted, 'Sinduja, please wait for me!' What struck me was the hairless head of that boy. 'May be, that is the in-stuff', I thought. 'Sir, your daughter Sinduja is great indeed!' Without introducing herself, a lady got out of the car, and continued, 'That boy who is walking along with your daughter is my son Harish. He is suffering from ... ... leukemia.' She paused to muffle her sobs. 'Harish could not attend the school for the whole of the last month. He lost all his hair due to the side effects of the chemotherapy. He refused to come back to school fearing the unintentional but cruel teasing of the schoolmates. Sinduja visited him last week, and promised him that she will take care of the teasing issue. 29
  • 30. But, I never imagined she would sacrifice her lovely hair for the sake of my son! Sir, you and your wife are blessed to have such a noble soul as your daughter.' I stood transfixed. And then, I wept... 'My little Angel, will you grant me a boon? Should there be another birth for me, will you be my mother, and teach me what Friendship is?' "Ninety-nine percent of the failures come from people who have the habit of making excuses." BATTLE OUT THE UNFAIR& EMERGE OUT VICTORIOUS..! Around two weeks ago I was called to judge a talent contest at one of the city colleges. I noticed all the participants were given slips of paper with a topic written on it and told to come up and speak for three minutes. Lots were drawn as to who would be the first speaker and the next and the next. The first contestant I noticed looked a little disgruntled as he got onto the podium to address the others. "My fellow students and respected judges," he said loudly, "this is an unfair contest!" I, along with my fellow judges looked up surprised. "I have been given this paper," he continued, "to speak on a subject with just a few minutes preparation whereas those after me have more time to work on their speech. This is unfair!" He then proceeded to leave the stage and stormed out of the hall. Nobody missed him and the contest went on smoothly. I met him on the landing as I was being escorted out later. "Who said life is fair?" I asked him with a smile. He looked at me startled and I asked him to walk with me to my car. "Life," I told him, "is fighting the unfair and still winning! Do you read automobile magazines?" "Yes," he said eagerly, "I do." "Have you seen statistics shown when a new car is being introduced into the market? They talk about speed and torque and transmission and horse power." "Yes," he nodded. "But there is a line they put after all these figures. They say all this data is when there are ideal road conditions!" "Yes," he said again. "Show me ideal road conditions?" I asked him and he smiled. "The car that sells well," I continued is the car that will deliver power and speed and durability in the worst of roads, in potholes and mud and slush. That car is a winner!" We had reached my car and he stood by my side as I heaved myself in. "Don't look for ideal playing conditions," I said. "Fight the unfair and come out a winner!" I looked back in my rear view mirror as I drove away and saw him smile and wave and knew he would fight the unfair from now on. The fight never stops. Ask all the successful people in our own country. They fight regardless whether the battle is fair or unfair. Stop telling the world about the unfair deal you've got out of life; start battling the unfair, come out victorious..! THE 90/10 PRINCIPLE Discover the 90/10 Principle. It will change your life (at least the way you react to situations). What is this principle? 30
  • 31. 10% of life is made up of what happens to you. 90% of life is decided by how you react. What does this mean? We really have no control over 10% of what happens to us. We cannot stop the car from breaking down. The plane will be late arriving, which throws our whole schedule off. A driver may cut us off in traffic. We have no control over this 10%. The other 90% is different. You determine the other 90%.] How? By your reaction. You cannot control a red light, but you can control your reaction. Don't let people fool you; YOU can control how you react. Let's use an example. You are eating breakfast with your family. Your daughter knocks over a cup of coffee onto your business shirt. You have no control over what just what happened. What happens when the next will be determined by how you react. You curse. You harshly scold your daughter for knocking the cup over. She breaks down in tears. After scolding her, you turn to your spouse and criticize her for placing the cup too close to the edge of the table. A short verbal battle follows. You storm upstairs and change your shirt. Back downstairs, you find your daughter has been too busy crying to finish breakfast and get ready for school. She misses the bus. Your spouse must leave immediately for work. You rush to the car and drive your daughter to school. Because you are late, you drive 40 miles an hour in a 30 mph speed limit. After a 15-minute delay and throwing $60 traffic fine away, you arrive at school. Your daughter runs into the building without saying goodbye. After arriving at the office 20 minutes late, you find you forgot your briefcase. Your day has started terrible. As it continues, it seems to get worse and worse. You look forward to coming home, When you arrive home, you find small wedge in your relationship with your spouse and daughter. Why? Because of how you reacted in the morning. Why did you have a bad day? A) Did the coffee cause it? B) Did your daughter cause it? C) Did the policeman cause it? D) Did you cause it? The answer is “D". You had no control over what happened with the coffee. How you reacted in those 5 seconds is what caused your bad day. Here is what could have and should have happened. Coffee splashes over you. Your daughter is about to cry. You gently say, "its ok honey, you just need, to be more careful next time". Grabbing a towel you rush upstairs. After grabbing a new shirt and your briefcase, you come back down in time to look through the window and see your child getting on the bus. She turns and waves. You arrive 5 minutes early and cheerfully greet the staff. Your boss comments on how good the day you are having. Notice the difference? Two different scenarios. Both started the same. Both ended different. Why? Because of how you REACTED. You really do not have any control over 10% of what happens. The other 90% was determined by your reaction. 31
  • 32. Here are some ways to apply the 90/10 principle. If someone says something negative about you, don't be a sponge. Let the attack roll off like water on glass. You don't have to let the negative comment affect you! React properly and it will not ruin your day. A wrong reaction could result in losing a friend, being fired, getting stressed out etc. How do you react if someone cuts you off in traffic? Do you lose your temper? Pound on the steering wheel? A friend of mine had the steering wheel fall off) Do you curse? Does your blood pressure skyrocket? Do you try and bump them? WHO CARES if you arrive ten seconds later at work? Why let the cars ruin your drive? Remember the 90/10 principle, and do not worry about it. You are told you lost your job. Why lose sleep and get irritated? It will work out. Use your worrying energy and time into finding another job. The plane is late; it is going to mangle your schedule for the day. Why take out your frustration on the flight attendant? She has no control over what is going on. Use your time to study, get to know the other passenger. Why get stressed out? It will just make things worse. Now you know the 90-10 principle. Apply it and you will be amazed at the results. You will lose nothing if you try it. The 90-10 principle is incredible. Very few know and apply this principle. The result? Millions of people are suffering from undeserved stress, trials, problems and heartache. We all must understand and apply the 90/10 principle. It CAN change your life***!!!!!! A SWEET LOVE STORY He met her on a party. She was so outstanding, many guys chasing after her, while he was so normal, nobody paid attention to him. At the end of the party, he invited her to have coffee with him, she was surprised, but due to being polite, she promised. They sat in a nice coffee shop, he was too nervous to say anything, she felt uncomfortable, she thought, please, let me go home. Suddenly he asked the waiter: "would you please give me some salt? I'd like to put it in my coffee." Everybody stared at him, so strange! His face turned red, but, still, he put the salt in his coffee and drank it. She asked him curiously: why you have this hobby? He replied: "when I was a little boy, I was living near the sea, I liked playing in the sea, and I could feel the taste of the sea, just like the taste of the salty coffee. Now every time I have the salty coffee, I always think of my childhood, think of my home town, I miss my home town so much, I miss my parents who are still living there". While saying that tears filled his eyes. She was deeply touched. That's his true feeling, from the bottom of his heart. A man who can tell out his homesickness, he must be a man who loves home, cares about home, has responsibility 32
  • 33. of home. Then she also started to speak, spoke about her far away hometown, her childhood, her family. That was a really nice talk, also a beautiful beginning of their story. They continued to date. She found that actually he was a man who meets all her demands; he had tolerance, was kind hearted, warm, careful. He was such a good person but she almost missed him! Thanks to his salty coffee! Then the story was just like every beautiful love story, the princess married to the prince, and then they were living the happy life... And, every time she made coffee for him, she put some salt in the coffee, as she knew that's the way he liked it. After 40 years, he passed away, left her a letter which said:" My dearest, please forgive me, forgive my whole life lie. This was the only lie I said to you---the salty coffee. Remember the first time we dated? I was so nervous at that time, actually I wanted some sugar, but I said salt it was hard for me to change so I just went ahead. I never thought that could be the start of our communication! I tried to tell you the truth many times in my life, but I was too afraid to do that, as I have promised not to lie to you for anything... Now I'm dying, I am afraid of nothing so I tell you the truth: I don't like the salty coffee, what a strange bad taste. But I have had the salty coffee for my whole life! Since I knew you, I never feel sorry for anything I do for you. Having you with me is my biggest happiness for my whole life. If I can live for the second time, still want to know you and have you for my whole life, even though I have to drink the salty coffee again". Her tears made the letter totally wet. Someday, someone asked her: what's the taste of salty coffee? It's sweet. She replied. LOVE AND TIME Once upon a time, there was an island where all the feelings lived: Happiness, Sadness, Knowledge, and all of the others, including Love. One day it was announced to the feelings that the island would sink, so all constructed boats and left. Except for Love. Love was the only one who stayed. Love wanted to hold out until the last possible moment. When the island had almost sunk, Love decided to ask for help. Richness was passing by Love in a grand boat. Love said, "Richness, can you take me with you?" Richness answered, "No, I can't. There is a lot of gold and silver in my boat. There is no place here for you." Love decided to ask Vanity who was also passing by in a beautiful vessel. "Vanity, please help me!" "I can't help you, Love. You are all wet and might damage my boat," Vanity answered. Sadness was close by so Love asked, "Sadness, let me go with you." "Oh . . . Love, I am so sad that I need to be by myself!" 33
  • 34. Happiness passed by Love, too, but she was so happy that she did not even hear when Love called her. Suddenly, there was a voice, "Come, Love, I will take you." It was an elder. So blessed and overjoyed, Love even forgot to ask the elder where they were going. When they arrived at dry land, the elder went her own way. Realizing how much was owed the elder, Love asked Knowledge, another elder, "Who helped me?" "It was Time," Knowledge answered. "Time?" asked Love. "But why did Time help me?" Knowledge smiled with deep wisdom and answered, "Because only Time is capable of understanding how valuable Love is." COMMITMENT I will never forget what my old headmaster told taught me. Normally when you are only 15 years of age you do not remember most of the things that are preached by your teachers. But, this particular story is one such lesson that I will never forget. Every time I drift off course, I get reminded of this story. It was a normal Monday morning at an assembly, and he was addressing the students on important things in life and about committing ourselves to what is important to us. This is how the story went: An old man lived in a certain part of London, and he would wake up every morning and go to the subway. He would get the train right to Central London, and then sit at the street corner and beg. He would do this every single day of his life. He sat at the same street corner and begged for almost 20 years. His house was filthy, and a stench came out of the house and it smelled horribly. The neighbors could not stand the smell anymore, so they summoned the police officers to clear the place. The officers knocked down the door and cleaned the house. There were small bags of money all over the house that he had collected over the years. The police counted the money, and they soon realized that the old man was a millionaire. They waited outside his house in anticipation to share the good news with him. When he arrived home that evening, he was met by one the officers who told him that there was no need for him to beg any more as he was a rich man now, a millionaire. He said nothing at all; he went into his house and locked the door. The next morning he woke up as usual, went to the subway, got into the train, and sat at the street corner and continued to beg. Obviously, this old man had no great plans, dreams or anything significant for his life. We learn nothing from this story other than staying focused on the things we enjoy doing, commitment. We should remain true to our course; which may mean committing yourselves to things that people around you would normally disapprove. Let nothing distract us from being happy, let nothing else determine our fate, but ourselves. 34
  • 35. What makes us happy is what matters in the end, not what we acquire. THE OLD MAN AND HIS SHOE One day an old man boarded a bus. As he was going up the steps, one of his shoes slipped off. The door closed and the bus moved off so he was unable to retrieve it. The old man calmly took off his other shoe and threw it out of the window. A young man on the bus saw what happened, and could not help going up to the old man and asking, "I noticed what you did, sir. Why did you throw out your other shoe?" The old man promptly replied, "So that whoever finds them will be able to use them. " The old man in the story understood a fundamental philosophy for life - do not hold on to something simply for the sake of possessing it or because you do not wish others to have it. We lose things all the time. The loss may seem to us grievous and unjust initially, but loss only happens so that positive changes can occur in our lives. We should not always assume that losing something is bad, because if things do not shift, we'll never become better people or experience better things. That's not to say of course that we only lose "bad" things; it simply means that in order for us to mature emotionally and spiritually, and for us to contribute to the world, the interchange between loss and gain is necessary. Hoarding possessions does nothing to make the world better for us. We all have to decide constantly if some things or people have run their course in our lives or would be better off with others. MAKE A DIFFERENCE TODAY A man was walking down the beach at sunset. As he walked along, he saw another man in the distance. He noticed this man kept leaning down, picking up something and throwing it out into the water, again and again. As, he approached even closer, he noticed that the man was picking up starfish that had been washed up on the beach. He was throwing them back into the water, one by one. Puzzled, he approached the man and said, "Good Evening. I was wondering what you are doing." "I'm throwing these starfish back into the ocean. You see, its low tide and all these starfish have been washed up onto the shore. If, I don't throw them back into the ocean, they'll die up here from lack of oxygen." "But, there must be thousands of starfish on this beach. You can't possible get to all of them. And, don't you realize this is probably happening on hundreds of beaches all up and down this coast. Can't you see that you can't possibly make a difference?" The man bent down and picked up yet another starfish, and threw it back into the ocean. With a smile he replied, "Made a difference to that one!!!" Just remember, no matter how small the deed it really does makes a difference. Make a difference today. Do something nice for someone else. 35
