*The Junior Counselor (JC) position is for applicants under the age of 18 and/or not yet graduated from high school. JC
responsibilities include, but are not limited to, assisting the Counselors facilitate the daily program activities.

PART II: PROGRAM ELEMENTS AND SPECIAL INTERESTS (Returning
Counselors need not fill out this portion of the application)
Two of the core elements of RCSummer are “Happy Hour” and “Club Time”, which are both designed to offer
participants an array of activities. During this time (Happy Hour every day for 60 minutes; Club Time twice a week for
75) all counselors are asked to lead activities, which showcase their special skills, talents or interests. Please describe
what you may have to offer to these elements of the program. Examples are baking, cooking, program
newspaper/yearbook, martial arts, fishing. . . .
What sport activities do you feel you could lead or help facilitate? Please list any special certifications. Sport activities
offered at RCSummer include: basketball, volleyball, tennis, swimming, floor hockey, field hockey, lacrosse, badminton,
table tennis, softball and bowling.
All program staff will also be asked to lead (or co-lead) performing or fine arts activities, which may include, but are not
limited to acting, dance, music, creation of props/costumes or a variety of crafts. How can you help facilitate this
element of the RCSummer Program? The Performing Arts element will be based on this year’s program theme “RC
Summer Tales”, which will showcase the following children’s novels: “Peter Pan”, Charlie and the Chocolate
Factory”, “Jungle Book”, “Wizard of Oz” and “Big Friendly Giant”.

3. *Part of the application process is a personal interview to be scheduled in April (tentatively from April 02 to April 10).
For overseas applicants, this may be done via phone (Skype). We will contact you via email to set an appointment.
*For applicants who are interviewed via phone, we ask for one letter of recommendation. We must receive rec. letter
before the telephone interview can take place. Please have letter sent to Joe Welch at jwelch@robcol.k12.tr
*If you are a university student, please send us an official document from your registrar confirming your current
enrollment in that institution.
*Please also be aware that there will be a need for all counselors who are hired to do a fair amount of research in order to
familiarize themselves with the program theme. This year’s theme is “RC Summer Tales”. More information regarding
the theme will be given after the hiring process is complete.
*Counselor orientation begins one week before each session of hire (June 19 and July 17 respectively) and is mandatory.
If you cannot be present for the entire counselor orientation, your application will not be considered.

4. 2011 ROBERT COLLEGE SUMMER PROGRAM COUNSELOR AGREEMENT
I, ______________________________ understand and am committed to the following responsibilities, goals and mission of the
Robert College Summer Program (RCSummer).
Counselors will . . .
* . . . do the necessary research prior to program to be able to facilitate activities that are relevant to the program theme.
*. . . actively participate in the orientation of the RCSummer and add whatever input or expertise they may have concerning any
aspect of the program.
*. . . follow the responsibilities explained at orientation as to daily participant-counselor interaction.
*. . . remain in the target language, English, during the entire day with participants. This includes counselor to counselor
conversations when participants are present.
*. . . attend and participate in the daily ‘post-program-day’ meetings.
*. . . be responsible to create, demonstrate and/or perform activities at appropriate times in order to acquaint participants in a fun and
creative way what the program has to offer.
*. . . be expected to act as role models for the participants and exhibit appropriate behavior.
*. . . be asked to be creative, enthusiastic and well-prepared during the program day and willing to put in time after the participants
have left the RC campus to work on activities, changes or improvements to the program. Counselors provided with on-campus
housing will be asked to participate in evening planning as seen appropriate by the Program Director/Core Staff counselors. Only
Core Staff and counselors residing outside of Istanbul will be provided with on-campus housing.
* . . . obey the following rules when in the dormitories. No guests are allowed to stay overnight. No smoking or consumption of
alcohol in dorms or any school building. Counselors will be asked to refrain from alcohol use during the week when RCSummer
activities are planned for the next day. Counselors will abide by the room assignments given at the beginning of the program and may
only change rooms if given permission by the Program Director. Counselors will follow all rules discussed at counselor orientation
concerning the communal living conditions/atmosphere in the dormitories and will behave accordingly. All RCSummer staff
members are considered guests while at Robert College and will follow the rules and regulations of the school as dictated by the
school.
* . . . have employment with the program terminated w/o pay if they do not fulfill and of the responsibilities mentioned in the
Counselor Agreement.
* . . . be responsible to have all correct and appropriate travel documents in order before the program begins. Failure to have travel
documents in order will result in immediate termination of employment.
*. . . be able to work with children with special needs or, if necessary, seek out assistance in working with children with special needs.
*. . . be asked to know their limits and take care of their mental and physical well-being. Counselors will be expected to help each
other out if someone falls ill or needs a break.
*. . . refrain from smoking except in the designated areas.
*. . . do their best to refrain from using their mobile phones during the program day.
*. . . be asked to cooperate with each other, Core Staff and Program Director. It is vital that there remain in place a certain hierarchy
and an open line of communication between everyone from the participants to Program Director.
*. . . carry program IDs with them at all times to be presented at the gates on request.
*. . . be expected to be professional at all times: use of appropriate language, punctual, prepared for day’s events and responsibilities
and respectful of other counselors and participants.
