Free books matter a lot. In the beginning, everything I wrote was intended for free. I had noticed that so many English language teachers here in my home country had to struggle to pay when they attended a professional conference or wanted to buy a book for their professional development.

My writing was a way for me to make a contribution to fill the need I had observed. It gradually dawned upon me that the only way I would ever have a legitimate way to alleviate the affordability gap was a paradox. Let me explain the paradox.

Again and again, I have observed human behavior as being counter-intuitive, a paradox. When something is free, it is not valued as much as something that you have to stuggle to obtain. It does not matter if your struggle is in terms of economic resources, or in terms of personal effort.

Put another way, when human beings get something without making an effort, as in cheap or free, it evokes no sense of importance within us.

  • 15. FOUR FANTASTIC FREE BOOKS 4 U!One of the most defining characteristics of anEFL classroom in Chile is the quality of theteacher. If the teacher teaches English inEnglish, they display what the quality of theirbeliefs are, namely, “in this classroom there isno place for the mother tongue.”If the teacher teaches English in Spanish, maybe they read my book, but weren’timpressed. The teacher’s beliefs are also ondisplay, namely, “there is a place for themother tongue in this classroom.”Who is right? Who is wrong? At any rate, thelanguage that the teacher teaches in, is crucial. It will ultimately define the students’achievements. 9

  • 29. FOUR FANTASTIC FREE BOOKS 4 U!How to Coach A Debate Team [Kindle Edition]This book contains all you need to know tosuccessfully coach a debate team. You mayneed to convince students that debate is a good idea, though. Here are six reasons: 1. Debating ability is a valuable skill. 2. Debate utilizes useful English. 23
  • 30. Thomas Jerome Baker 3. It is a unique way to teach grammar. 4. It develops critical thinking skills. 5. It introduces global issues. 6. It develops research skills. A more powerful reason to coach a debate team is given to us by Dr. Martin Luther King: ““Sooner or later all the people of the world will have to discover a way to live together in peace… If this is to be achieved, man must evolve for all human conflict a method which rejects revenge, aggression, and retaliation…” Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.– 1964 Nobel Peace Prize Acceptance Speech 24

I therefore dedicate this book to all theeducators, researchers, parents and students the world over, who strive to achieve thiselusive goal,high-quality education for all the citizens of the world. In this endeavour, it is my belief that the International Baccalaureate merits acloser look, based on their more than 40 year 26

  • 40. CHAPTER 3 WHY “FREE” MATTERS: SHARING & CARING Free books matter a lot. In the beginning, everything I wrote was intended for free. I hadnoticed that so many English language teachers herein my home country had to struggle to pay when theyattended a professional conference or wanted to buy abook for their professional development. My writing was a way for me to make acontribution to fill the need I had observed. Itgradually dawned upon me that the only way I wouldever have a legitimate way to alleviate theaffordability gap was a paradox. Let me explain theparadox.Again and again, I have observed human behavior asbeing counter-intuitive, a paradox. When somethingis free, it is not valued as much as something that youhave to stuggle to obtain. It does not matter if yourstruggle is in terms of economic resources, or interms of personal effort.Put another way, when human beings get somethingwithout making an effort, as in cheap or free, itevokes no sense of importance within us. 34
  • 41. FOUR FANTASTIC FREE BOOKS 4 U! I have seen this paradox at work in classrooms, bystudents who value a low, barely passing mark with arigorous demanding teacher over a perfect mark witha teacher who is less demanding. Another examplewould be attending a conference or event for freeversus paying a fee. As incredibly unbelievable as it may sound, wehumans, the world over, value effort and hard work,to the point of personal sacrifice, in our lives. Itfollows then, that when you give someone a freeentrance to a conference, or some other event, it isquite likely that a huge number of absences willoccur. It is not hard to understand why. After all, wehave lost nothing. We paid nothing, we lose nothing.Nothing from nothing leaves nothing. Thiscalculation is universally true when it comes tohuman behaviour. However, I am not pessimistic. There are peoplelike me. If you give me a free ticket, I will go to theconcert, to the conference, to the show. After all, it isgood, it cost me nothing. Likewise, if you give me a free book, I will acceptit with a smile and a “Thank You kindly”! Then I’llread your book, and if it is good, I’ll tell someone elseabout it. If it made me smile, if it made me cry, if ittouched me in some kind of emotional way, I’ll tellthe world about you and your book. 35
  • 42. Thomas Jerome Baker I’ll even go out of my way to ensure that thepeople in my world knows about you, who you are,and what you did. I’m talking about the important people in my life,my family, my relatives, my friends, my co-workers,my colleagues, the mailman, the milkman, the taxi-driver, the whole world I come into contact with, Iwant to make sure that I share with someone else. Finally, dear reader, that’s what I’m doing rightnow. I’m sharing with you, for free. You pay $0.00cents. I’m sharing four books that I wrote, each of whichI know is a great book, with an important message forthe person who reads the books. For example, Boudica is a strong woman who hasto make some difficult decisions. You may agree ordisagree with Boudicca, but one thing is sure: readingBoudicca: Her Story will make you more aware ofyour own humanity, and consequently, how fragilewe are as individuals, and as a society. Meet Me in Memphis is a love story. Love storiesare all around us, every day, every where we look, wesee two humans with a profound emotional bondwith one another. At this moment, if you could seeme, you would see me smiling, because I’m in love.I’m thinking about the woman I love, my Gaby. I fellin love with her the first moment I saw her.Incredibly enough, she fell in love with me the firsttime she saw me. It was only later that she found outI wasn’t such an easy person to get along with. She 36
  • 43. FOUR FANTASTIC FREE BOOKS 4 U!has managed to make me a better person than I everwould have become without her. What’s the message? Here it is: When a personwrites a love story, the writer must be in love. It is the only requirement for the love story, that itbe real, and thus able to impact you, the reader in aprofound, emotional way. Meet Me in Memphis isreal... Time to Teach Teens is equally real. You take ateacher, me, and you spend time with me as I sharewith you a very special summer spent working with agroup of teens. I share my thoughts, my tips, my waysof working with teens. The reality of looking at my work, from areflective point of view, is that you come away with apoint of comparison, if you are a practicing teacher, between yourself and me. You compare how we teach, literally. If you are a young teacher, you get some ideas thatyou might want to try, or to avoid. You will developyour own style, based on your own experiences, buthere is as good as any place to start from: theexperience of reality. Finally, Teaching Academic Writing is exactlywhat it says. You get essays about aspects of teachingacademic writing, taken from a year in which I taughtAcademic Writing to English pedagogy students atUniversidad Andrés Bello in Santiago. As you read, you have access to actual practice. You get a chance to understand one way of helpingstudents to become better writers. You will find that I 37
  • 44. Thomas Jerome Bakeram a great fan of process over product. You will meetDr. Peter Elbow, a man who discovered that he hadgraduated from university, but had not learned towrite. You will meet genre, you will meet controversy, and in the end, you will have a more informed basefor your own practice, and for your own writing. Finally, I’m sharing with you because I knowthere are people who will take advantage of thisunique opportunity. For others, who won’t or can’ttake advantage of something that is free, we willaccept, quite simply, that life is like that. I hope you enjoy all four books. A part of me iswithin the pages of all four books, waiting for you todiscover. A smile is inside each book for you. Anaspiration, a hope, a dream is inside each book, waiting for you to find it. And when you find it, that part which moves you, that which touches you emotionally, then pleaseshare with someone else. If you will do that, thenFREE is a good word, and FREE matters. And if you find nothing inside the pages of thesefour books, then of course, you have nothing to share, and I accept the blame for my failure, for your loss oftime. If such is the case, I humbly beg yourforgiveness, in advance. Still, I hope you enjoy yourbooks, for I have written them for you, dear reader. 38
