CSP Case Study
Linking two Sport Maker groups to
       increase deployment

Oxfordshire Sports Partnership ran one Sport
Makers event for students and one for police
officers. By challenging the students to deliver a
sport session as part of the officers’ event, the
        CSP created immediate deployment
opportunities. Read on to find out how they did
        it…

Linking two Sport Maker groups to

      • Oxfordshire Sports Partnership decided to approach their
local police force with a view to delivering Sport Makers to
police officers. They reasoned that the programme would
keep officers active and encourage them to engage with their
community (one of the most deprived areas in the region).

      • They approached their local community policing sergeant
and agreed to deliver an event to officers.

      • The CSP met with the community policing team to promote
Sport Makers in their area. The community policing sergeant
took on the responsibility of marketing and recruitment within
           the police force.

      • A Sport Makers event for students at The Oxford Academy
and apprentices at Oxford and Cherwell Valley College was
also being planned at that time. The CSP decided to link this
event with the work they were doing with the police.

      • The CSP first ran an event for the students. Part of the event
included planning a sport session that the students would run
for the police officers, who would be attending a Sport
           Makers event the following day.

      • They then ran an event for over 20 police and community
sport officers at The Oxford Academy, where students
organised football and dodgeball sessions that both police
staff and officers took part in.

                      What worked?
CSP Case Study
Linking two Sport Maker groups to
       increase deployment

        • Linking the two events – by asking students to deliver sport
to police officers, the CSP created immediate deployment for
the students and demonstrated how the programme worked
            to the officers.

        • Delivering the events separately - although both groups
took part in the second event, this allowed for each one to be
            delivered effectively for both audiences.

        • Having students lead the officers in the 2nd event - this
broke down any ‘us vs them’-style barriers, allowing police
officers to engage positively with younger members of a
            deprived community.

        • Holding the events at The Oxford Academy – the
Academy’s specialist sports facilities meant that various,
easy-to-run deployment opportunities were available to
students. The head of sport encouraged students to deliver
sessions to peers during lunchtimes and after school, using
            school equipment.

        • Asking officers to use the Sport Makers website – police
officers are reluctant to use the website to record hours. The
CSP is investigating ways in which they can do it for them.

        • 25 police officers and nearly 40 students attended the
            events.

        • One police Sport Maker has been organising group fitness
sessions, while a group from the police force have organised
            a football tournament.

        • Rounders Activators and Jog Leaders have been recruited
            from the police force.

      • Greater positive engagement between the police and the
           community.

      • Coverage in the local media – including in The Oxford Mail.

      • A sergeant who says she’s happy to see the PCSOs smiling
           for a change!
