Unlike in the US, where employers are bound by law never to ask candidates to reveal their
age, in India age discrimination has a visible tilt towards younger hires.Although diversity in
terms of gender has been much talked about, the buzz around age diversity is now getting
louder in the corporate world. Industry experts said while a large number of younger
employees are hired every year, it is equally important for companies to maintain a
generational diversity which has a mix of employees in different age groups.
A survey conducted by Executive Access Research Group among middleand seniorlevel
executives across seven industries shows that 45% of the workforce lies between 30 and 40
years of age. In industrial and infrastructure industries, the employee age averages
between 30 and 40, while in consumer and technology , 40-50% of the workforce is
between 35 and 40 years of age.
Age diversity is defined as the ability to accept different types of ages within a business
environment. However, as compared to gender diversity , age diversity has been less
popular at the workplace. Organizations are now making attempts to maintain a fine
balance between different age groups. They are also facilitating better interaction across
generations.

“Generational diversity is here to stay in India,“ said Srimathi Shivashankar, associate VP of
diversity & sustainability at HCL Technologies. “Ten years ago, the average age of an IT
worker in India was 23, and now it is 29 years.As industries mature, so will the workforce
from the generational diversity perspective.“
PepsiCo India says a mix of age groups is important because the company wants to strike a
balance between “experienced veterans and fresh blood“. “Experience provides stability
while fresh blood brings new ideas on the table,“ said Samik Basu, its chief HR officer.
Although PepsiCo is a young organization with almost 50% of employees in the age group
of about 30, the organization realized that age diversity is becoming more critical. “We
believe it is important to tap talent when they are young and fresh as you can groom them
for future leadership roles from early on,“ said Basu.
Companies are realizing that generational diversity is important from the innovation aspect
as well. “Companies are driving age diversity because they don't want clones.Diversity can
bring about that mindset which is commanded by market realities today ,“ said Ronesh
Puri, MD, Executive Access (India).
