While the first wave of malaria symptoms is usually uncomfortable but not really frightening,
the later symptoms can be very problematic. In some cases, people develop what is known
as cerebral malaria, which can cause seizures and sometimes comas. This type of malaria is
often fatal if not treated soon enough. Malaria can cause liver and kidney failure because
these are the organs that malaria parasites usually attack most. To avoid these sorts of
problems medicine is needed as early in the disease as you can get it. If you are
experiencing any malaria symptoms at all, it is important to get your blood tested. This way, if
you have managed to get malaria it can be properly treated before progresses to a more
severe stage. Most malaria symptoms start out as mild. Also, you may not even notice the
symptoms until later, such as several weeks after a malaria-carrying mosquito has bitten you.
You might have cold or flu like symptoms after a period of being in a country where malaria is
present. Many people tend to ignore those symptoms, thinking they simply have a cold or flu.
Make sure you visit your doctor right away if you exhibit cold or flu like symptoms after being
in a country known for having malaria. It's quite easy to treat mild malaria cases. If you don't
get the symptoms treated in a timely manner, a mild case of malaria may come back at a
later time but as a severe case. It's a deceptive disease. So if you think your symptoms may
be that of malaria, it's important that you get medical help at the soonest.
Infants and children are especially hard hit by malaria. To reduce the risk of your children
contracting malaria, make sure they are given anti-malarial drugs prior to traveling with them
to a malaria risk country or region. Medications given to children and adults for preventing
malaria are the same. However, the doses given to children are smaller. It should be pointed
out that exceeding the recommended dosage of these drugs is dangerous. These drugs must
be in containers that are childproof and stored where your children can't have access to
them. Malaria is not a disease you'll want to ignore or be casual about, especially in children.
Don't think twice about taking your child to the doctor if he or she is showing symptoms of the
disease.
For many decades now, health experts have been trying to find ways to eradicate malaria.
Third world countries are where malaria is particularly rampant, and it is because of this state
of poverty that malaria is difficult to eradicate. You're at risk of contracting malaria if you
travel to a country where this disease is prevalent, which is why it's important that you take
steps to learn about the disease and take preventive measures.
