Stance Control/Free Knee Joints
KAFO*s (long leg braces) are used to support weak
lower leg musculature. Traditional KAFOs with
locked knee joints present considerable challenges:
frequent falls, typical walking pattern. In the long
run, these adversely a ect the users’ con dence and
productivity.
Ottobock o ers the most current technology to
overcome these problems. Your clinical condition
permitting, we can t you with a Stance Control
Orthosis. The Knee Joint is locked when your leg is
loaded and unlocks when you li it o the ground.
Alternately, we can t KAFOs that use mechanical
knee joints with free movement & in-built stability
for speci c muscle weaknesses.

The principle
An intelligent sensor system measures the position
of the leg and locks or unlocks the knee joint based
on which phase of the walking cycle you are in.

Locked Knee Joints
Signi cant lower limb muscles weakness requires
stability o ered by KAFOs with locked Knee Joints.
At Ottobock, our KAFOs use automatically locking
Knee Joints, which can be unlocked using a cable
attached at thigh level. You do not need to bend to
unlock, hence your back is protected.
Ankle Joints which assist or limit lowering/raising of
foot compliment these joints.
The shells are designed considering maximum
correction of load-line to relieve & protect your joints
in the long run.

due to trauma or sports may lead to weakness
around foot and ankle area. A seemingly small
limitation like inability to li your foot (Foot-Drop)
can lead to a limiting lifestyle.
In such situations, a correctly designed AFO** is the

When it comes to children, tting an AFO needs a
