2. Diabetes is caused by eating too much sugar
and I wont get it if I don’t eat sweets.
Its not so. Carbohydrates and
fats are the culprits if taken
too much in any form.

3. I’m overweight and ill eventually develop
diabetes.
Its not so. But you are at risk.

4. Diabetes is not a very serious disease.
Type 2 diabetes is not as bad as type 1 diabetes.
It’s a serious
disease.
Both are
equally bad if
the blood sugar
is not kept in
control.

5. The disease ll ruin my life. I cant prevent its
complications.
With effective blood sugar control, you can.

6. If my doctor advises
me to start using
insulin it means my
diabetes is getting
worse.
It means your blood sugar
is not in control and that
doesn’t necessarily mean
your diabetes is getting
worse.

7. I cant eat sweets or chocolate because of
my diabetes.
You can eat in smaller amounts, but make
sure it fits in your required caloric intake.

8. I should eat special diabetic foods if I have diabetes.
Fruits contain carbohydrate so I should avoid
including them in the diet.
There is no such thing as special diabetic diet.
your regular diet is just modified to match your
required caloric intake.
Not at all. But some fruits like Mango have a high
carbohydrate content. If needed, it can also be
consumed – but regulated according to your diet.

9. I shouldn’t
exercise if I
have
diabetes
Nope you can. Work
out a plan with your
physician.

10. Diabetes in women
prevents them from having
children.
Diabetes can cause
complications during pregnancy
but definitely you can have
children.
