Premature birth and certain congenital conditions can cause a persistent opening between the pulmonary artery and aorta called a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). Babies with a PDA may experience fast breathing, poor feeding, weight gain issues, and fatigue. A PDA allows oxygen-poor blood from the pulmonary artery to mix with oxygen-rich blood from the aorta, resulting in too much blood flow to the lungs and reduced flow to the rest of the body. Treatments for a PDA include medication to close the opening, a catheter-based procedure to insert a device, or surgery to ligate the duct if other methods are unsuccessful.

Bell had a special relationship with his deaf mother, which shaped his views on sound. He went on to teach deaf students and develop Visible Speech, a method for teaching spoken language through mouth shapes. In 1871, Bell moved to Boston where he taught and exhibited Visible Speech. With funding from one of his student's fathers, Bell began experimenting with telegraph transmission theories, which led to his invention of the telephone in 1876. Bell received many honors for his invention and continued work related to sound and communication for the deaf.
