Portugalete is a town lying to the west of Bilbao in the province of Biscay in the Autonomous Community of Basque Country, northern Spain.
THREE TRADITIONAL STREETS
The three oldest street of portugalete are: Santa Maria, Coscojales and the middle.These three streets were abandoned in the early twentieth century, due to the darkness of the streets.Coscojales and Azaranazas streets were occupied by workers of Portugalete.
BASILICA OF SANTA MARIA
It is reported the construction of the present church in 1492, with the tower-porch a later work (s. XVII and XVIII). Is Gothic - Renaissance. Presents basilica and has an octagonal apse three panels. While inside the vaults are supported by pillars fasciculate, outside loads are distributed over buttress attached to the buttresses. Among them are housed chapels borne by noble families
SHOPPING CENTER BALLONTI
The town of Portugalete Vizcaya was the site of the first digital cinema in three dimensions of the Basque Autonomous Community.That new room was joined at six under for 'Ballonti Cinemas' 2,300 square meters and 1,100 seats in the upper floor of the shopping complex Jarrilleros municipality.
It is the world's oldest transporter bridge and was built in 1893, designed by Alberto Palacio, one of Gustave Eiffel's disciples. From his house in Portugalete, Alberto Palacio could see how his master work was partially destroyed just before his own death.
On July 13th of 2006 it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
EVENTS AND FESTIVALS
San Roque Festivals - 16 August They officially last four days, from August 14 until August 17, the main festivities occurring on August 15 and August 16, "San Roque" day. "La Diana Portugaluja" is the song that is sung in the morning August 15, eve of "San Roque" day. "Los Portugalujos", the people of Portugalete meet up in the Town Hall square singing the song, in order to liven up the festival.
Monuments in Portugalete include the 15th century Basílica of Santa María, Salazar's Tower, and the town hall in addition to the old medieval arches and streets in the older part of the city.
PORTUGALETE FOOTBALL TEAM
Club Portugalete is a Spanish football team based in Portugalete, in the autonomous community of Basque Country. Founded in 1909, it plays in Tercera División - Group 4, holding home games at Estadio La Florida , with a capacity of 3,000 seaters.
Built by the provost of the town, Ochoa Salazar, in the year 1.494-99. The most famous of Salazar was Don Lope García de Salazar. This tower was strategically located ground for a battle over banderizas. It comprises the whole of the tower and the rest of the wall that formerly had to surround the building. In the tower, the second level shows the shield of Salazar. Until the eighteenth century, the first floor was the role of prison. It was rebuilt in 1934 by the architect Joaquín de Yrizar, due to a fire, the restoration does not respect some elements .
