  4. 4. <ul><li>A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY </li></ul><ul><li>With the idea of conquering new lands and finding a better life, coasting emerged. In distant times, sailor’s families sited lights on high points in order to guide sailors in their trip or to indicate a dangerous area. Families sited light points on land zones in the middle of the sea too. </li></ul><ul><li>The first business routes were opened by the Carthaginians, they were between the Mediterranean Ocean and the North Atlantic Ocean. </li></ul><ul><li>The first lighthouse is thought to have been built in Alexandria (323-270 BC). The most ancient lighthouses are documented in the Post-Roman period. </li></ul><ul><li>Today, lighthouses a symbol, although most of them are automated. Lots of them have been turned into tourist attractions. Some of them still preserve their lighthouse keeper. </li></ul>

Lijo and Agapito Mendoza work here. </li></ul><ul><li>Agapito is fifty years old and he has been the lighthouse keeper since 1976. </li></ul><ul><li>They each work in 48 hour shifts each one. </li></ul><ul><li>Romans came here in order to confirm that the whole world was behind their back. </li></ul><ul><li>Celtics thought Fisterra was the beginning of the “ Afterlife ”. </li></ul>

  9. 9. RIBADEO LIGHTHOUSE <ul><li>From this lighthouse you can see Ribadeo, the monastery of Santa Maria (Vilanova de Lourenzá), A ponte de Arante and the viewpoint of Santa Cruz Mountain. </li></ul><ul><li>It was rebuilt in 1880. </li></ul>

  31. 31. BUDA’S PEAK LIGHTHOUSE <ul><li>This area was signposted and lighted in 1864 with 3 iron lighthouses. </li></ul><ul><li>Buda Lighthouse was swallowed up by the sea in 1960. </li></ul><ul><li>Nowadays we can see it one mile into the sea. </li></ul>

FANGAR’S PEAK LIGHTHOUSE <ul><li>This lighthouse was lit for the first time on 1st November 1864 </li></ul><ul><li>It elevated the focal plain to 9m above sea level and 8m above land. </li></ul><ul><li>The lighthouse has a medicine chest and a delivery service that takes place twice a week </li></ul>

PORT OF BARCELONA LIGHTHOUSE <ul><li>“ AB01” is a new system of signposting created by two young men from Barcelona. </li></ul><ul><li>Many foreign cities are interested in it. </li></ul><ul><li>It’s a big stainless steel arch with some leds. </li></ul><ul><li>Its luminous signal is visible from 5 miles out of sea. </li></ul>

COLUMBRETE ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE <ul><li>There are no constructions in this island, except for a jetty, a 19th century lighthouse, and the installations used by the biologists working in the natural park. </li></ul><ul><li>The lighthouse keepers are no longer here. The lighthouse was automated years ago. </li></ul><ul><li>Today, the only inhabitants on the islands are the park employees working for the Columbretes Island Nature and Marine Reserves. </li></ul>

  61. 61. CHIPIONA LIGHTHOUSE <ul><li>This is the tallest lighthouse of Spain, the third of Europe and the fifth of the world. It measures 62 meters. </li></ul><ul><li>It indicates the Guadalquivir entrance, the only navigable river in Spain. </li></ul>

Sometimes I'm sad and alone Like the captain at the wheel, wanting to be home But you are there for me You shine your bright light for me to reach out to Sometimes I'm confused, not sure what to do Like the seaman who looses his way in the fog But you are there for me Your voice tells me the right direction. Sometimes life is as rough as the uncaring sea It causes panic, frustration, and despair But you are there for me A quiet entity on the edge of a rugged cliff.
