Part three of my “What Do You Eat For?” blog series.
In part one, I highlighted eating for pleasure and the emotional or immediate gratification that goes along with
it. In part two, I explained how eating for energy is often controlled by our blood sugar driving food
choices. Now, let’s dive into part three, “Eating for Recovery.”

Effects of Eating
This category of eating is positive, but making the decision to eat this way is usually a result of the cumulative
effects of eating for pleasure and eating for energy. Eating for recovery can be tiresome and judgmental. You’re
usually coerced into healthier meal plans and restrictions because you’ve:

Put on some pounds, maybe even to the point of obesity.
Been diagnosed with some form of disease or disability like diabetes, cancer, etc.
(Most positive reason) become aware of how your food choices impact energy, health, and brightness of mood.
Being pushed into this category usually means that the benefits of eating this way will be short-lived, and you may
be tempted to go back to your old habits. There definitely is an immediate positive effect of making healthier
food decisions like eating more nutrient-rich foods and less of the Standard American Diet (SAD) foods that got
you into this position. But change is hard... and even harder when you’re at a low point trying to climb out.
Deep Core Reason for Eating
What can you do to improve the likelihood of successfully eating for recovery? I think its important to start
educating yourself on the significant impact food choices have on you. At the most basic cellular level, food is
recognized as either a nutrient or a toxin by the body. Nutrients promote cell growth and
resilience. Toxins, on the other hand, impair cellular function and disrupt normal health within our
bodies. Knowing which foods are the best forms of fuel for our bodies and minds will make a huge difference.
Finding a deep, core reason within you for eating this way that is more meaningful than surface reasons like
simply eating to “get yourself off diabetic medication” or “to lose your muffin top” is incredibly powerful as
well. Why not start thinking about “eating for health?” We’ll dive into this topic in the last part of this blog
