Full Synopsis
As a 16 year-old girl in High School, the teenager is easily influenced by
everything around her. One day, while sitting at home, she notices that her
older brother has all his friends over and that they all seem to be having a
good time. She then calls her friends to see if they want to do anything and
they all say they are busy with their boyfriends for the day. She realizes that
she hasn’t had a boyfriend in a while and begins to wonder why. She sets
down her phone and heads to the kitchen.
In the kitchen the girl goes to a jar of cookies on the counter and takes one
out. Next to the cookie jar, she sees a magazine with an ad about being pretty
and skinny. She then sees all the skinny girls in the magazine and begins to
think about her weight. She looks down at herself and decides to throw the
cookie away, grabbing the magazine and taking it back to her room.
While in her room, the girl continues to look at the magazine and read the
articles on how to lose weight and how to diet. She then flashes back to an
image of herself being skinny, and all the guys being interested in her.
Looking out the window, she sees the boys and thinks about how they would
be interested in her if she were skinny like the girls in the magazines. She
changes into workout clothes and heads out the door, leaving the magazine
full of skinny girls open on her desk.
She starts going for a run around her neighborhood and pushes herself to get
a good workout in. The girl continues to stay on her workout routine, going
for a run anytime her mind wanders to wanting food. She comes home one
day after one of her runs and goes to too step on the scale, noticing no
difference She lets out a sigh of frustration and sadness and goes to head back
out the door, for another workout.
2. As she is about to go out for another run, one of her guy friend shows up at
the door. He asks her how she have been doing and sees if she would want to
go get food with him. Instead, she tells him that she is not hungry and that
she is about to head out for a walk. He questions her, saying that she looks
like she was just working out, and when she denies it, he tells her that she
looks like she has lost a lot of weight. He then goes on to tell her that he
thinks she is beautiful and perfect just the way she is, and that she should not
be starving herself. He wishes he could have a chance with her. This is a
turning point in the story, which makes the girl smile and wonder why she
had never noticed that he was interested in her.
The story ends with the girl going out to dinner with the guy and two of their
other friends. They sit and enjoy their meals and she happily eats her food,
laughing at the idea that she was starting herself in order to be happy and find
a boyfriend. She looks over at her guy friend and smiles, as he leans in to kiss
her. She is happy with who she is and doesn’t need to be influenced by the
medias portrayal of what a ‘pretty’ girl should look like.
