In sales and entrepreneurship you must be prepared for, and ready to deal with
rejection on a regular basis.
You must learn to grow thick skin.
Your level of success when working for yourself or when
working in sales is in large part determined by your ability
to deal with rejection and your ability to separate your
activity from your results.
When I say "rejection" I don't necessarily refer only to someone rejecting what you say
or telling you "No". I am also referring to the fact that a lot of the effort that you put out
may not have a direct result or accomplishment.
Let me give you an example to illustrate...
You do a mailing to a list of 100 people. This may be by email or postal mail; it doesn't
really matter. Now, let's say that you get zero results from that mailing. If you look at
this as a failure then you are looking at it the wrong way. It's not a failure at all. You
simply learned that the exact method you used to market to these people wasn't
effective. It could be due to your ad copy, the quality of the list, the demographic of the
list, etc.
As long as you don't let the results of any particular activity effect your ability to
continue working your business, then you are on the right track. You can use the data
you gathered from this effort to make future efforts more effective by
- Finding a different or better source of leads
- Improve your marketing or ad copy to be of better quality of more targeted.
- Do additional mailings to the same list to increase your exposure.
- etc...
The main thing is that you learn from these types of experiences and use them to your
advantage rather than letting them effect your state of mind or your success.
2. If you change your outlook from a work based to a results based mentality and if you
accept that a lot of what you do may not have an immediate result, then you will learn to
move on and continue moving forward.
Here’s some suggestions I came up with to help this process.
- Focus on results, not the process or necessarily the work
itself.
In a normal “job” a lot of focus is put on the work itself, and not as much on the results
of your actions. Reverse your thinking and focus on the results, because it's not so
important what you did to get the results you want, but only that you did get the results
in the end. Once you know what gives you the results you want, you can duplicate it over
and over to get the same results.
- Focus on the positive, not the negative
You will deal with rejection and negativity from people. It’s simply part of the process
that you must go through. Focus on the positive aspects of what you're doing and don't
ever let any negativity or rejection from other people get you down or have an impact on
your business.
- Some will, some won’t, so what, NEXT!
You will talk to a lot of people that are not interested in what you have to offer. The
number of people that aren't interested is not important. What is important are the
results of what you do and the people that are interested in what you have to offer.

writing it. By taking these thoughts and writing them out it has caused me to think
about these factors as well and makes me want to improve my outlook on business and
sales.
