4. 1ST PERSON WRITING
• First person point of view is a point of view in which
an "I" or "we" serves as the narrator of a piece of
fiction. The narrator may be a minor character,
observing the action, as the character. In addition, a
first-person narrator may be reliable or unreliable.
 First person is often used for describing personal
experiences, feelings or stories.
 Writing an effective first-person essay enables you to
insert yourself into the essay and can be practice for
college admission essays and cover letters that often
require the use of the first-person format.
 While first person point of view can allow a reader to
feel very close to a specific character's point of view, it
also limits the reader to that one perspective. The
reader can only know what this character knows.
Some writers, especially beginning writers, have a
tendency to get stuck in first person point of view.

12. SECOND PERSON WRITING
*Use of the imperative mood (expresses a request or command) and the
pronouns you, your, and yours to address a reader or listener directly.
*The second-person point of view is commonly used in step-by-step
instructions--that is, in a directive process analysis that explains how to do or
make something. Here is an example:
How to Build a Sand Castle
Making a sandcastle is a favorite project of beach-goers of all ages. Begin by
digging up a large amount of sand (enough to fill at least six pails) and arranging
it in a pile. Then, scoop the sand into your pail, patting it down and leveling it off
at the rim as you do. You can now construct the towers of your castle by placing
one pail full of sand after another face down on the area of the beach that you
have staked out for yourself. Make four towers, placing each mound twelve
inches apart in a square.

 When writing in third person we are telling the
readers what our characters are doing and their
thoughts. In first person we would use the words
I did, but in third person we only ever say he or
she did.
 Third person form can be written in various
forms; omniscient, objective, subjective and third
person-limited.
