1ST PERSON WRITING
• First person point of view is a point of view in which
an "I" or "we" serves as the narrator of a piece of
fiction. The narrator may be a minor character,
observing the action, as the character. In addition, a
first-person narrator may be reliable or unreliable.
 First person is often used for describing personal
    experiences, feelings or stories.
 Writing an effective first-person essay enables you to
insert yourself into the essay and can be practice for
college admission essays and cover letters that often
require the use of the first-person format.
 While first person point of view can allow a reader to
feel very close to a specific character's point of view, it
also limits the reader to that one perspective. The
reader can only know what this character knows.
Some writers, especially beginning writers, have a
tendency to get stuck in first person point of view.
WRITE ABOUT A FAMILY
    MEMBER
• Choose someone in your family to write about.
    Write his/her name here: _____________________________

• Fill in information about your relative.
    1. How is this person related to you?
       _________________________________________________
    2. How old is he/she?
       _________________________________________________
    3. Is he/she married or single?
       __________________________________________________
    4. Where does he/she live?
       ___________________________________________________
     5. What does he/she do?
       ____________________________________________________
      6. What are his/hobbies?
       _____________________________________________________

• Information about your relative:
    1. How is this person related to you?
       Jessica is my daughter.
    2. How old is he/she?
My daughter is 21 years old.
    3. Is he/she married or single?

• Use as much information as you want. Include
your relative’s name in the first sentence.
Jessica is my daughter. She is twenty-one
years old and single. I am proud to say that
Jessica will be celebrating her twenty-second
birthday next week. At this time, she is training to
be a restaurant manager. Other than playing her
cello and enjoying her animals, I know she works
hard towards fulfilling her career goals.
CHECK POINT – FIRST
PERSON

 First point of view uses ____ or ______ .
 First person is often used for describing _______
  experiences, ________ or _______.
 Writing an effective first-person essay enables you to
  _____ yourself into the essay.

 How to Write a First-Person Essay | eHow.com

SECOND PERSON WRITING

*Use of the imperative mood (expresses a request or command) and the
pronouns you, your, and yours to address a reader or listener directly.
*The second-person point of view is commonly used in step-by-step
instructions--that is, in a directive process analysis that explains how to do or
make something. Here is an example:

How to Build a Sand Castle
Making a sandcastle is a favorite project of beach-goers of all ages. Begin by
digging up a large amount of sand (enough to fill at least six pails) and arranging
it in a pile. Then, scoop the sand into your pail, patting it down and leveling it off
at the rim as you do. You can now construct the towers of your castle by placing
one pail full of sand after another face down on the area of the beach that you
have staked out for yourself. Make four towers, placing each mound twelve
                               inches apart in a square.
SECOND PERSON PARAGRAPH
        WRITING
         SAMPLE
Writing about a person you know can be fun. First,
choose a friend or relative to write about whom you
find interesting. Second, gather information which
describes the friend or relative to the reader in detail.
Lastly, provide the reader with interesting or little
known facts that will make the story exciting.
CHECK POINT – SECOND
PERSON
 Which pronouns should you use when writing in
  second person? _________, ________, ______
 Second person writing is commonly used in _________
  by __________ writing.
 Second point view writing explains _____ ____ ____ or
  __________ something.
  and-third-person.aspx
THIRD PERSON WRITING
 When writing in third person we are telling the
readers what our characters are doing and their
thoughts. In first person we would use the words
I did, but in third person we only ever say he or
  she did.
 Third person form can be written in various
forms; omniscient, objective, subjective and third
  person-limited.
THIRD PERSON POINT OF
                 VIEW
                SAMPLE

 Jessica is a recent undergraduate, who is
interested in becoming a restaurant manager.
Jessica is serious about her career, although she
is only 21 years old. She often spends her free
time doing research and studying, but she does
find time to enjoy the small things in life.
Jessica’s favorite hobby is playing the cello and
spending time with her dog, Barky.
CHECK POINT – THIRD
           PERSON
 Third Person tells what the characters are
  ________ and their ____________.
 Third person uses only the words _______ or
  ______ .
 Third person can only be written in on format?
  True or False
 http://www.ehow.com/how_5110284_write-essay-
  third-person.html
FINAL NOTES
 You should use particular points of view in
particular situations.  To help you with this,
keep these three things in mind:
 Use 1st person to indicate personal experience,
  evaluation, and/or opinion.
 Use 2nd person to instruct or address the
  reader.
 Use 3rd person to generalize the experience or
  situation.
