Pattern of interaction: 4 groups of 5 students each.
Topic: The life-cycle of the butterfly
Warmer (10’)
We’ll read the story “The very hungry caterpillar” by Eric Carle to the students. Before
reading we’ll ask children to recognize the character of the book, and we’ll make sure that
they know what a caterpillar is. After reading we’ll ask some comprehension questions.
We’ll tell the students that we are going to do a project in which we will learn about the
transformation of the caterpillar into a beautiful butterfly, as in the story.
Web (30’)
Ss will start working on the webquest. “Caterpillars”
We’ll explain the task and the objectives they are expected to achieve. We’ll also explain
Ss that whenever they find difficulties with some vocabulary words, or if they want to
check something, they can do so by accessing dictionaries online. We’ll give them some
links in the webquest.

To start with, they will work on points 1 and 2.
In point 1, they will have to search some links and gather information about caterpillars to
answer some questions in a word document. The web pages they will investigate are the
following:

3. b)
In point 2 they will have to draw the body of a caterpillar indicating all its body parts, with
the help of the links above.
If students do not get to answer all the questions, or do the drawing because they’ve run
out of time, they can finish it as homework.
What next (5’)
After Ss have finished the first two points, the teachers will brainstorm the word
CATERPILLAR. Ss will say words they relate to it, such as what they eat, where they live,
and any information they have gathered from the web pages.
