Who were the greasers (1950’s)?
 • Greasers were a predominately white ethnic youth subculture
   that originated in the 1950s among young northeastern and
   southern United States street gangs.
 • The style and subculture then became popular among other
   types of people, as an expression of rebellion.
 • In the 1950s and early 1960s, these youths were known as
   hoods
 • The name greaser came from their greased-back hairstyle,
   which involved combing back hair with wax, gel, creams,
   tonics or pomade.
 • Greasers were known for their love for hot rod cars.
Identity:
            Hair
              • Typical Greasers hairstyles
                included the pompadour, the
                Duck's tail and the more
                combed-back Folsom style.
                These hairstyles were held in
                place with hair wax.
Clothing:
            Greasers items
            usually consisted of
            white t-
            shirts, baggy levi
            jeans either suited
            with a black leather
            jacket or denim
            jacket. With
            footwear of black
            harness boots or
            white chuck taylors.
Cars:

The greasers
were into hot rod
cars, which many
of them used to
race.
Music:

• known for
  being fans
  of 1950s
  rock'n'roll
  and
  rockabilly
  music.
Common stereotypes:
•   All greasers are dumb or uneducated.
•   All greasers are hood.
•   All greasers are failures
•   They are poor
