With hypothyroidism, releasing weight, though difficult, is possible.
If your thyroid stopped producing the thyroid hormone would you know it?
The symptoms of decreased thyroid hormone synthesis, known as hypothyroidism, are hard to
spot. Although approximately 10 million Americans have been diagnosed with thyroid disease,
thousands more go undetected, misdetected, and not treated properly. Nicknamed by doctors,
"the great mimicker", thyroid disease with its symptoms including fatigue, weight gain, weakness,
thinning hair, and constipation often gets mistaken for other health problems or the aging process.
At the base in the front of your neck sits the thyroid, a small butterfly-shaped gland that plays a
huge role in the endocrine system, which creates, distributes, and regulates hormones in the
body. The hormones produced by the thyroid gland, T3 and T4, regulate the body's metabolism
by providing cells with energy they need to function.
When the balance of chemical reactions in your body is disturbed by not enough of these
hormones being produced by your thyroid many times it results in a slow metabolism. THe clinical
symptoms directly related to this metabolic upset can be frustrating, the most common being
weight gain.
Less calories are burnt daily if thyroid hormone levels are low. A thyroid gland that is producing
less hormone causes every calorie to count more, sometimes double. It makes losing weight
really hard.
Attempting to lose weight and have an underactive thyroid, consider these seven things:
1. See your physician
It is important to see your Doctor if you are experiencing hypothyroidsim symptoms. Your
physician will be able to daignose through a blood test if synthetic thyroid hormones are needed.
It's important to note that taking the thyroid hormones will help normalize hormone levels, but they
won't necessarily cause you to lose weight. Releasing those unwanted pounds will require
changes to your diet and lifestyle (more about this below).
2. Don't eat foods that hinder the absorption of thyroid hormone
It's important to stay away from certain foods and nutrients that can hinder absorption when taking
thyroid hormones. For example, dietary calcium or iron can inhibit thyroid hormone absorption.
For this reason, many doctors recommend taking thyroid medication immediately upon rising and
two to three hours apart from consuming calcium- or iron-containing foods. Be sure to do your
research as some calcium- and iron-containing foods and supplements may be surprising such as
antacids, calcium-fortified orange juice, and multivitamins.
There are foods that disrupt thyroid function as well (goitrogenic foods) which should be avoided
also. Some regularly eaten foods that are goitrogenic are non-fermented soy foods, legumes such
as lima beans,and raw cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts.
You can reduce the amount of goitrogens in these foods by cooking or fermentation.
3. Quality protein should be eaten at every meal
Muscle tissue has the most effect on your bodies (BMR)-the rate your body burns calories. Even
when you are sleeping or at rest your muscles need energy to rebuild and restore. Therefore it is
key to preserve muscle when on a weight lose journey. To improve your muscle mass resulting in
greater BMR, faster metabolism, and greater energy expenditure eat meals higher in protein
compared to other macronutrients (fats, carbohydrates). It requires more calories than both fat
and carbohydrates combined to absorb and digest protein.
4. Calories should be chosen with care
Every calorie is important when on a weight lose journey. This is even more apparent when your
metabolism is sluggish. Stay away from sugary drinks, white-flour pastas and bread, and other
sources of refined carbohydrates that leavee you feeling hungry and fatigued because of quickly
spiking your blood sugar. Consuming meals loaded with deitary fiber rather than refined
carbohydrates will satisfy your appetite and keep you feeling fuller, longer. A high fiber diet also
helps rid hypothyroidism-induced constipation by bulking, solidifying and softening stools.
5. Exercise, start slow and work up
Weight loss can be aided by exercise and especially lifting weights because it speeds metabolism
and muscle growth, so do it even when feeling the common fatigue of hypothyroidism. High-
intensity interval training (HIT) is a great choice if time and desire are issues. HIT involves
alternating intense bouts of exercise ranging from 30 seconds to several minutes with recovery
periods spanning one to five minutes. When it comes to improving body composition and
metabolic health the benefits of HIT are greater than longer, continuous exercise.
6. Getting enough vitamins and minerals daily is very important
Thyroid health can be improved with a diet including adequate amounts of the minerals iodine and
selenium. Sources of iodine include iodized salt and sea vegetables such as kelp. Brazil nuts,
animal products, seafood, and dairy contain selenium. Taking supplements is a way to guarantee
you are getting sufficient amounts.
Vitamin D is especially important for people with thyroid issues and other autoimmune problems.
Vitamin D is important to so many things in the body from bone to brain health, ensure you are
getting enough through diet, supplementation or soaking up the sun.
7. Beauty sleep and plenty of it
It is always important to get enough sleep when you are trying to release weight but particularly
when you have a thyroid disorder. In an effort to increase alertness, sleep deprived people will
often eat high-calorie foods. Using unhealthy foods to self-medicate your fatigue is catastrophic to
both your trim figure and your health. A metabolic meltdown can be the result of decreased insulin
sensitivity because of sleep deprivation. Seven to nine hours of sleep each night is what an
average adult needs.
It is possible to reach your weight-loss goals even if you have hypothyroidism. Attitude,
persistence, and action will lead you to your healthy happy place.

How Much Is The Thyroid Gland To Blame For Weight Gain?

  • 1. who knew such a tiny With hypothyroidism, releasing weight, though difficult, is possible. If your thyroid stopped producing the thyroid hormone would you know it? The symptoms of decreased thyroid hormone synthesis, known as hypothyroidism, are hard to spot. Although approximately 10 million Americans have been diagnosed with thyroid disease, thousands more go undetected, misdetected, and not treated properly. Nicknamed by doctors, "the great mimicker", thyroid disease with its symptoms including fatigue, weight gain, weakness, thinning hair, and constipation often gets mistaken for other health problems or the aging process. At the base in the front of your neck sits the thyroid, a small butterfly-shaped gland that plays a huge role in the endocrine system, which creates, distributes, and regulates hormones in the body. The hormones produced by the thyroid gland, T3 and T4, regulate the body's metabolism by providing cells with energy they need to function. When the balance of chemical reactions in your body is disturbed by not enough of these hormones being produced by your thyroid many times it results in a slow metabolism. THe clinical symptoms directly related to this metabolic upset can be frustrating, the most common being weight gain. Less calories are burnt daily if thyroid hormone levels are low. A thyroid gland that is producing less hormone causes every calorie to count more, sometimes double. It makes losing weight really hard. Attempting to lose weight and have an underactive thyroid, consider these seven things: 1. See your physician It is important to see your Doctor if you are experiencing hypothyroidsim symptoms. Your physician will be able to daignose through a blood test if synthetic thyroid hormones are needed. It's important to note that taking the thyroid hormones will help normalize hormone levels, but they won't necessarily cause you to lose weight. Releasing those unwanted pounds will require changes to your diet and lifestyle (more about this below). 2. Don't eat foods that hinder the absorption of thyroid hormone It's important to stay away from certain foods and nutrients that can hinder absorption when taking thyroid hormones. For example, dietary calcium or iron can inhibit thyroid hormone absorption. For this reason, many doctors recommend taking thyroid medication immediately upon rising and two to three hours apart from consuming calcium- or iron-containing foods. Be sure to do your
  • 2. research as some calcium- and iron-containing foods and supplements may be surprising such as antacids, calcium-fortified orange juice, and multivitamins. There are foods that disrupt thyroid function as well (goitrogenic foods) which should be avoided also. Some regularly eaten foods that are goitrogenic are non-fermented soy foods, legumes such as lima beans,and raw cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts. You can reduce the amount of goitrogens in these foods by cooking or fermentation. 3. Quality protein should be eaten at every meal Muscle tissue has the most effect on your bodies (BMR)-the rate your body burns calories. Even when you are sleeping or at rest your muscles need energy to rebuild and restore. Therefore it is key to preserve muscle when on a weight lose journey. To improve your muscle mass resulting in greater BMR, faster metabolism, and greater energy expenditure eat meals higher in protein compared to other macronutrients (fats, carbohydrates). It requires more calories than both fat and carbohydrates combined to absorb and digest protein. 4. Calories should be chosen with care Every calorie is important when on a weight lose journey. This is even more apparent when your metabolism is sluggish. Stay away from sugary drinks, white-flour pastas and bread, and other sources of refined carbohydrates that leavee you feeling hungry and fatigued because of quickly spiking your blood sugar. Consuming meals loaded with deitary fiber rather than refined carbohydrates will satisfy your appetite and keep you feeling fuller, longer. A high fiber diet also helps rid hypothyroidism-induced constipation by bulking, solidifying and softening stools. 5. Exercise, start slow and work up Weight loss can be aided by exercise and especially lifting weights because it speeds metabolism and muscle growth, so do it even when feeling the common fatigue of hypothyroidism.
