People often consider that creating a web application is done by creating a bunch of HTML, Javascript and CSS files together in a text editor and uploading them on the web. Well, things have changed and in this presentation, you will see how the workflow used to deliver web applications has evolved over the past few years! We will start by seeing how you can use Yeoman and its generators to kickstart your project. Then you will see how Bower let you manage the dependencies of your project. Downloading the JavaScript and CSS frameworks that you are using for you. After that we will have a look at Chrome Devtools in order to debug and edit our application. We will also see how to use remote debugging to inspect a web application running on a phone or a tablet. Finally we will see how you can set up your whole continuous integration workflow with Grunt. Compilation, static code analysis, unit tests, integration tests, minification, code coverage, you name it. This talk has been presented during EclipseCon North America 2014 in San Francisco

OSGi Community Event 2018 Presentation by Lukasz Dywicki (Code-House) Abstract: During this short presentation I will revisit existing mechanisms and approach towards OSGi and JEE development. I will show how many manual steps can be avoided and how to maintain project in effective manner. I will try to find a balance between execution environment requirements and programmer happines at same time. I believe that OSGi and Eclipse ecosystem experience troubles gaining people from outside for few reasons. Beside overall impression of OSGi complexity there is equally old and invalid complain about quaility of developer tooling. Since invention of BND development experience can be really pleasant and independent of text editor/IDE preferences. Sadly lots of people still rely on former experiences spreading black/bad PR. I would like to clarify their point. After this presentation attendees will learn: How to use Maven to build OSGi projects (without Tycho). How to automate manual tasks. How to build custom software distributions with Maven artifacts and run it with Apache Karaf. That OSGi development doesn't differ much from regular day-to-day usage of application servers or microservice runtimes. This talk is intended for people who know basics of OSGi as it will show few basic technics towards better developer productivity.

This presentation will discuss how we use Docker to improve our development and deployment of WordPress sites. The presentation describes how themes and plugins can be developed locally and then packaged into a Docker container. A Jenkins pipeline is used with Git to automatically run a build and deploy the new WordPress container onto a test server where automated Selenium scripts are executed. Based on the results of the tests the container is tagged as a production candidate. A deployment pipeline is then used to execute a Blue-Green deployment on the latest update to production. Once the deployment is proven to work through automated testing the router is switched to the new deployment. The overall process helps reduce the risk of production updates to WordPress, themes, and plugins as well as reduce security concerns caused by randomly installing plugins by users. The presentation will also discuss strategies for running a WordPress database both outside and inside of a Docker container. It will discuss the pros and cons of each approach. In the battle to stay organized, efficient, sane and maximize on billable time it helps to have systems in place to help deal with the daily business processes and management that make sure that you are working on what you should be and that projects, budgets and timelines stay on track. In particular, when you work on your own, its critical to have things like billing, time tracking and project management as a natural and seamless part of your workflow. This session aims to be a whistle stop tour of some useful open source tools and subscription solutions I have found to be well worth their costs - including how they can be used effectively together to allow you to make the most efficient use of your time designing and developing Drupal sites. I work as a remote contractor & consultant and my clients are drupal shops and companies needing web sites and systems designed, built, themed and/or maintained. These tools and services work for me to help stay organized and on top of my workload and help me to manage my responsibilities across multiple clients and timezones effectively. The material in this session is geared more towards individual freelancers although much of it will be relevant for larger drupal shops and teams too. Business services won the "most likely to get digitally mugged" award, with education and retail nipping at their heels. Hackers expanded their repertoire beyond boring old encryption to the much more exciting world of extortion. The US, UK and Canada took top honors in the "countries most likely to pay up" category. Bitcoins were the currency of choice for discerning hackers, because who doesn't love untraceable money?

Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with. Attend this talk and prepare for the performance issues that will eventually hit any successful system.
