2. La Voz Pasiva
In active voice the subject performs the action.
El mecanico arregla el coche.
The mechanic fixes the car.
In passive voice the subject is the recipient of an
action that is preformed by an outside agent.
El coche es arregaldo por el mecanico.
The car is fixed by the mechanic.

3. La Voz Pasiva
The passive construction is:
subject + ser + past participle (+ por + agent)
•The verb ser can be in any tense or mood.
Las fotos son reveladas por ese fotografo.
Las fotos eran reveladas por ese fotografo.
Las fotos fueron reveladas por ese fotografo.
•The past participle agrees with the subject.
El coche fue arreglado por el mecanico.
Las ventanas fueron arregladas por el carpintero.

4. La Voz Pasiva
• Passive construction is used to focus on the subject
rather than on the agent.
La casa fue destruida por un incendio.
The house was destroyed by a fire.
(The focus is on the house not the fire)
• The agent is not always expressed.
Este castillo fue construido en el siglo XV.
This castle was built in the 15th century.

Describa las siguientes catastrofes usando la voz
pasiva:
1. Mi hermanito rompio las ventanas de la sala.
Las ventanas fueron rompidas por mi hermanito.
2. Un incendio destruyo esas casas.
Esas casas fureon destruidas por un incendio.
3. Un huracan tumbo los arboles.
Los arboles fueron tumbados por un
huracan.

6. La construccion ser + verbo
In passive constructions where the agent in not
expressed you use the constructions:
se + verb + subject or subject + se + verb
ex: Aqui se arreglan coches.
Cars are fixed here.
• The verb always agrees with the subject, which
may come before or after the verb.
• The subject almost always represents object but
can represent people.
Se necesitan mecanicos
Mechanics are needed.

7. La construccion ser + verbo
• This construction is often used to describe
events resulting from unknown agents or natural
phenomena
Se quemaron los arboles en el incendio.
The trees were burned in the fire.
• The se construction is also used to express
unitentional actions.
Se le rompieron los vasos.
He broke the glasses (unintentionally)

8. La construccion ser + verbo
The impersonal se construction can be used to show
that unspecific people did something to a specific
person.
se + singular verb + a + specific person
ex: Se felicito al buen arquitecto.
They congratulated the good
architect
• Since the subject is the indefinite pronoun se the
verb is always in the singular

9. La construccion ser + verbo
Diga si, en su opinion, se realizaran las siguientes
cosas antes de 2015.
1. Descubrir un cura para el cancer.
Si, (No, no) se descubrirá un cura para el cancer.
2. Construir mas centros de nucleares.
Si, (No, no) se construirá mas centros de nucleares
3. Cambiar la Constitution de Los Estados Unidos.
Si, (No, no) se cambiará la Constitution de Los

10. Las contrucciones ser y estar + el
participio pasado
• The construction ser + past participle is used to
express and action in the passive voice.
El restaurante es abierto por la gerente.
The resaurant is opened by the manager.
• The construction estar + past participle is used to
express a condition resulting from an action. In
this construction the agent is never mentioned.
El restaurante esta abierto.
The resaurant is open.
