Hi, I’m Linnai Marz of Marz Business Services. Just a little background – Prior to starting ourbusiness 3 years ago, I had 18 years experience working in the accounting field – in jobs ranging from an Accounting clerk to Accounting Manager, with even a brief stint working in a CPA office. All those years of implementing software packages , looking at numbers, generating reports, and watching the companies react (or sometimes NOT react ) to the information contained in those reports created a real desire to help the business owner understand how important that information really is. Accurate Bookkeeping or Accounting isn’t something done once a year so you can file your taxes, and then you’ll find out how you did last year, it plays a critical role in helping the business owner gain the knowledge necessary to reach his goals. Where has your business been in the past?Where do you stand now?Where are you heading?
Manysmall business owners feel like they need to wear multiple hats - manage production or service aspects, make marketing and other spending decisions, staffing and scheduling, and do the required paperwork. Unfortunately, the result can be overwhelming.
The needs of a small business owner are simple – most need more money and more time. At Marz Business Services, we believe you can achieve both if you simplify your processes, maximize your knowledge, and make decision so your business will thrive.
Certainly there must be an easier way then hand-writing checks, throwing receipts into a file and checking your bank balance online. It may save time now, but costs you money during tax time. It also keeps you from really knowing how your business is doing. One idea I’ve always promoted is efficiency and simplification. Whenever possible, achieve multiple goals in 1 step. One way to do this is by computerizing your bookkeeping. The simple act of entering your bills will track due dates of bills, record the type of expense, and create buying history. This information is then available to look up at any time. Paying with computerized checks mark the bill paid, and reduce your bank balance – giving you a real time bank balance instantly. If you don’t want to create computerized checks, having a professional bookkeeper record the information for you in a computer system gives you all the benefits, and also provides peace of mind that it is done correctly.
As a Certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor, I can help the business owner customize a system set up to track the information specific to the business. We can set up processes that will make it easy to capture that information and transfer into QuickBooks for reporting. If you choose to do the entry yourself, or have staff enter it, we can provide training specific to your customized set up. Then, we will review monthly to ensure entries are complying with accounting principles and be available to answer your questions. We can also make it easy to pass off all records on a regular schedule and we will do the work and provide a system copy and monthly financials. We will also reconcile your accounts monthly so you will have a complete year end packet to hand off to your tax preparer to reduce questions and lower your bill.
Accurate bookkeeping can make the difference between a growing business and one that is just staying alive. There is a wealth of knowledge that can be found in that stack of deposit tickets, credit card statements, and bills. But, it requires the data be recorded in a way that is useful to the business owner. Most business owners aren’t trained accountants and can spend many hours just trying to keep track of the details, much less put it into a format that will really inform them of the state of the business. What could you be doing instead? What is your hourly rate….could you be generating revenue instead of sitting in the office? How much could it SAVE you to have a professional bookkeeper do this for you.
You can also, of course, identify when some expenses are too high or completely unnecessary. In the attached example, the company was spending too much money on ‘overnight delivery’ instead of planning ahead. Setting in place some process changes will save them money. You can use the Income Statement to find trends, look for expenses suddenly spiking out of control, or track your actuals to a budget. Maximize your knowledge so you can maximize your profits!
Where you go from here is up to you.
I have over 20 years experience working with small businesses. I’ve seen good examples and I’ve seen bad examples. I’ve seen enough to know that the only business that will grow is one where the business owner really understands the numbers, what they are telling him and takes action to improve based on that understanding. At Marz Business Services, we help the business owner have that information so they can make the best decisions. Their Success becomes Our Success.
