5. 5. WHAT QUESTIONS DO YOU BRING WITH YOU TODAY?
6. 6. What is media?

In communications, media (singular medium) are the storage and transmission channels or tools used to store and deliver information or data. It is often referred to as synonymous with mass media or news media, but may refer to a single medium used to communicate any data for any purpose.

(from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_(communication))
7. 7. What is social media?
Social media are media for social interaction, using highly accessible and scalable communication techniques. Social media is the use of web-based and mobile technologies to turn communication into interactive dialogue. A common thread running through all definitions of social media is a blending of technology and social interaction for the co-creation of value.
(from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_media)
8. 8. How is it different than other forms of media?

Most modern forms of media are unidirectional. Content is created by one party and then distributed to others who receive the content. The hope is that persons will interact with the content but within the media itself (i.e. the medium of distribution) there is no structure to facilitate that interaction.

SOCIAL MEDIA IS BI-DIRECTIONALANDOMNI-DIRECTIONAL
Initial content is created by someone and then persons interact with that content. The media itself is the means and place where the social interaction happens. I do not need to go anywhere else to participate actively.
9. 9. SOCIAL MEDIA IS SOCIAL

It is more about the relationships that are built around the content than the content itself. The content is often secondary to the relationships.

“The medium is the message”
a phrase coined by Marshall McLuhan meaning that the form of a medium embeds itself in the message, creating a symbiotic relationship by which the medium influences how the message is perceived.
10. 10. SOCIAL MEDIA HAS A MESSAGE OF ITS OWN

If what McLuhan said is true, then social media has a message of its own over and above everything that is being shared through this form of media. It is also creating its own environment (culture) by its mere presence. What that culture is, is not fully understood yet. However, what is sure is that it is impacting most of the population in our world. It is changing how people relate to one another as families, friends, colleagues, consumers, nations, enemies, and in the church. We do know a little about what is happening though as we will see in the next video

SOCIAL MEDIA IS MORE THAN A FAD
11. 11. SOCIAL MEDIA IS ORGANIC

The possibility of social sharing is that content and the interaction with that content can create its own eternal loop sharing system and go on for decades without the one who originally created it doing anything more to keep the content going. Stored in the “cyberspace” the conversations take on a life of their own independent of the creator.

What is the ministry of Jesus?
Luke 4:18-19: “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
12. 12. What is the ministry of Jesus?
Matthew 28:18- 20: Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
21. 21. If you want to use social media where to do you start?
Begin as a follower
Evaluate the “channels of communication” that exist in your network of relationships already to determine how much time you should spend with social media
22. 22. If you want to use social media where to do you start?

Start sharing what is happening in your life. Don’t worry about being trivial

Be consistent
Comment on and contribute to what others are doing, noticing, thinking, and creating. BE SOCIAL AND RELATIONAL
23. 23. If you want to use social media where to do you start?
Use the same social skills that you use in “real life.” To build real relationships with real people
As you go into all the nations make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.
Share as yourself not about yourself
24. 24. How can I use social media responsibly?
Don’t over share
Don’t be afraid
Don’t think that it is going to make people rush into you church
Make it 1 way you relate to people; not the only way
25. 25. How do I not spend all my time on the computer?

Decide how much time you want to spend on this a week and stick to it.

How are others using social media?
26. 26. How are others using social media?
27. 27. QUESTIONS AND QUALIFIERS
Be Useful – is there clear value to the user?
Be Interesting – messages need to be interesting to be shared.
Be Human – the Internet is made up of people. people matter. this includes you.
Scratch an Itch – solve problems. provide a service. create public goods.
Social Design – encourage social actions (share, RT, like, video reply, spawn offline actions).
28. 28. QUESTIONS AND QUALIFIERS
Unadvertising - don’t sell or shill – solve problems, enlighten, share.
Be Snackable – create short, discoverable, quick touch points for the social life-stream.
Cater to the other – help users look smarter.
Build Trust & Community – be “we” and inclusive.
Inspire – does it inspire you? If it doesn’t… why would it inspire others?
29. 29. How is MCUSA using social media?
Goal # 1 - Use Social Media to Share News
To use current Internet based social media applications such as Twitter and Facebook in conjunction with the biannual conference news gathering services of MCUSA to share information among our Mennonite community of faith and beyond before, during and after the conference in Pittsburgh, PA. To use social media to tell the story.
30. 30. How is MCUSA using social media?
Goal #2 - Use Social Media to Broaden Conversation
To use social media to lower the barriers of invitation, inclusion and investment to and in the Pittsburgh 2011 MCUSA National Conference and beyond for persons that are not able to be physically present for whatever reason. To use social media to build community.
35. 35.
