This question has received a lot of answers over the years, and seems dominant on search engines.
Well to be honest with you, the answers people give are not right and could open the gate for poverty to
encroach. How can an individual possibly leave his well paid job as a receptionist, to pursue his
passion for plumbing?
When people are told not to pursue their dreams, it is probably termed as an insult. Well, if I should let
you know, most creative minds did not just sit down to work what they wanted, they had to scout for a
job that would support them. That wasn’t a barrier to their chase for that which they love to do. In other
words, your day job is not a criterion for not following your passion. All over the internet, when
questions like this are thrown, the answers given are contrary to the real fact. You quit your day job,
become your own boss, but does the income at the beginning cater for your needs? I came up with this
article to help people balance the equation of their day jobs and their passion.
Long before I started blogging, I had a day job which I had to do between the hours of 7:30am to
4:00pm. My passion is and has always been to have a work doing while at home and to be able to
share my opinion and ideas to the world through blogging. Now, I neither had the resources nor the
technical skills at that time to kick of this dream pursuit, I had to apply for a job, so I could cater for my
minute needs. After about 5 months, I was able to save up to purchase a modem and a hosting
package to start my blog project. After working during the day, I would keep my blog fresh with
information at night.
My point is, your day job brings you to your passion. Before ever you think of quitting your job and fully
chasing after your passion, you should have clearly listed reasons why you should do it.
Test yourself for some consistent period of time, and see how it works out for you (though 70% regret
this decision).
It’s true that what you have passion for, is what you tend to do best, but before this dream can be
actualized you need perseverance, fortitude and determination. These qualities do not just come to you
immediately you quit your job, develop them while you work. Bloggers go as far as publishing posts like
“How I quit my day job, and followed my dreams”
“How I quit my day job and started earning big sitting at home”
I term this kind of posts dis-satisfactory because it only makes you hope and dream without actualizing
those dreams.
My Advice
Before you indulge yourself into doing what you could regret for a long time, it is best you take your
time to understand your situation. Do not do it because someone did it and it looks really easy,
remember that as we differ facially, so does our life. Yes, Adam quit his job as a marketer and became
a super sprint racer and Sharon quit her banking job to become a horticulturist with class, the same
may not be said for you. These stories would only thrill and inspire you to your doom, but if you chase
2. your passion and don’t make it big at the beginning, you always have a backup (your day job).
Conclusion
Do not quit your day job to pursue that which you love, while your day
job pays your bill, your passion makes you happy. P.S: fulfilling your
dreams becomes a whole lot easier.
