  2. 2. What is it? <ul><li>The nation’s highest military honor </li></ul><ul><li>Awarded to gallant and intrepid soldiers throughout American history in wars like WWI and WWII </li></ul><ul><li>“The deed performed must have been one of personal bravery” </li></ul>

Only 1 Soldier was Awarded This Award <ul><li>The Japanese American soldiers were the most decorated and credited with shortening the war by 2 years. </li></ul><ul><li>Many Japanese American soldiers were recommended for this high honor… </li></ul><ul><li>But only one soldier, Sadao Munemori was awarded the Medal of Honor </li></ul>
  4. 4. Nearly 50 years after WWII… <ul><li>Once Senator Daniel Akaka knew that awarding the Medal of Honor was based on racial discrimination, </li></ul><ul><li>He ordered the re-evaluation of Japanese Americans in WWII </li></ul>
  5. 5. <ul><li>Based on impressive record of 100 th Infantry Battalion/ 442 nd Regimental Combat team it was believed there should have been more medal of honor recipients </li></ul><ul><li>On June 21, 2000 President Clinton awarded 20 other Nisei soldiers. </li></ul>
  6. 6. <ul><li>13 were given posthumously and the 7 that survived accepted their awards personally </li></ul>

Hajiro <ul><li>He did 3 heroic actions at Bruyeres, and Biffontaine, France in October, 1944 </li></ul><ul><li>The one that most impressed me is: </li></ul><ul><li>He and 1 comrade, while on security duty, concealed themselves, ambushed an 18-man, heavily armed enemy patrol, killing two, wounding 1, and took the rest as prisoners. </li></ul>
