Haiti faces many challenges including poverty and lack of access to education. An organization called The World Bank aims to help Haitians by promoting education programs to empower communities and create long-term positive change. Their goal is to support Haitians in developing their country through education initiatives that strengthen individuals and society.
French fight Spanish and win Haiti. They turn the country into a factory: growing and exporting sugar, tobacco, indigo and cotton. There were 750,000 slaves, imported from Africa, to only 32,000 French. Public torture and execution are used regularly to maintain control.
Haiti's painful and brutal history of slavery, colonialism, imperialism and this popular struggle for democracy had completely drawn me in. Getting to know Haitians and witnessing their determination and perseverance in the face of incredible odds compelled me to engage indefinitely with Haiti, with Haitians.
Children's Academy earthquake resistant building is beautifully designed and intended to foster innovation. It's a source of incredible pride for the people in the community – a very poor, rural community outside Port au Prince.
We hold monthly open community meetings at the school to make sure issues are getting addressed.
