22. INTRODUCTION
OPERATING PRINCIPLE
There is a perforated drum with specially
designed vanes which rotates at high speed
when operating. Oil mist will be drawn into the
unit and it impacts on the vanes at high velocity.
There are also special drum pads around the
drum to assist the coalescing process and ļ¬lter
out stray solid particles. Also centrifugal force
can push oil to the unit`s outer case along which
the oil drains back to the machine for reuse or
collection. At the same time clean air is returned
to the workshop through the top of the unit.
OPERATING STEPS
1.The unit remove oil mist at source.
2.Oil mist is removed from the air by centrifugal impaction and stay on the vanes.
3.Under the centrifugal forces, clean oil is returned to machine.
4.Clean air is returned to workplace.
5.Smoke and fume can be removed and eļ¬ciency increased with the addition of a clip-on
afterļ¬lter.

23. Introduction
Oil mist collector ļ¬lters are afterļ¬lters, which are designed for the removal of oil smoke and any submicron
particles that have passed through the oil mist collector unit. After installation of the oil mist unit, you can
retroļ¬t it by the ļ¬lters, which will ļ¬t easily over the exhaust end of the unit by using clips to ļ¬x it.
The ļ¬lter cartridge is a media type ļ¬lter which can create a physical barrier through which the air must pass.
And they are constructed of ļ¬lter media formed into continuous pleats. The end caps can be injection
moulded or galvanized steel base with integrally moulded hooks. There is a foam seal around the base to
ensure all the air ļ¬ow passes through the media ļ¬lter.This construction is very light and robust.
There are two types of high eļ¬ciency afterļ¬lters available,the highest grade oļ¬ering up to 99.95% ļ¬ltration
eļ¬ciency.

There are ļ¬ve mechanisms by which particles are ļ¬ltered from the air by air ļ¬lter media. Theyin clude Straining
(Sieving), Interception, Diļ¬usion and Intertial seperation and Electrostatic attraction. Each mechanism has a certain size range where
it is the dominant factor for ļ¬ltration of particles. Inertial separation and interception are the dominant collection mechanisms for particles
greater than 0.2 m, and diļ¬usion is dominant for particles less than 0.2 m. Electrostatic attraction is obtained by charging the mediaĪ¼ Ī¼
as a part of the manufacturing process.
Straining occurs when the opening between the media members
(ļ¬bers, screen mesh, corrugated metal, etc.) is smaller than the particle diameter of
the particle the ļ¬lter is designed to capture. This principle spans across most ļ¬lter
designs, and is entirely related to the size of the particle, media spacing, and media
density.
In order to be intercepted, a particle must come within a
distance from a ļ¬bre of one radius of itself. The particle thus makes contact
with the ļ¬bre and becomes attached. The interception mechanism can be
contrasted with the impaction mechanism in that a particle which is intercepted
is smaller and its inertia is not strong enough to cause the particle to continue
in a straight line. It therefore follows the air
Diļ¬usion occurs when the random (Brownian) motion of a particle
causes that particle to contact a ļ¬ber. As a particle vacates an area within the media,
by attraction and capture, it creates an area of lower concentration within the media to
which another particle diļ¬uses, only to be captured itself. To enhance the possibility of
this attraction, ļ¬lters employing this principle operate at low media velocities and/or
high concentrations of micro ļ¬ne ļ¬bers, glass or otherwise. The more time a particle
has in the "capture zone", the greater the surface area of the collection media (ļ¬bers),
the greater the chances of capture. Filter manufacturers have two distinct methods
of addressing this principle ā employ more square footage of ļ¬ne glass-mat type
media or employ less
Inertial Separation uses a rapid change in air
direction and the principles of inertia to separate mass (particulate) from the air
stream. Particles at a certain velocity tend to remain at that velocity and travel in
a continuous direction. This principle is normally applied when there is a high
concentration of coarse particulate, and in many cases as preļ¬ltration mode to
higher eļ¬ciency ļ¬nal ļ¬lters.
Filters utilizing large diameter ļ¬bre media
rely on electrostatic charges to increase their eļ¬ciency of ļ¬ne particle removal.
Large diameter ļ¬bre media is normally chosen due to low cost and air ļ¬ow resistance.
However, these ļ¬lters often lose their electrostatic charge over time because the
particles captured on their surface occupy charged sites, thereby neutralizing their
electrostatic charge.
