Simple Tricks to Optimize PDF Files
1. Simple Tricks to Optimize PDF Files
A Portable Document Format (PDF) needs to be optimized for the web. In other words, it has to be
made as functional as possible for the user. Although, while one is creating PDF file for the web, PDF
optimization is oft snubbed. Therefore, there is a need to understand the significance of PDF
optimization. It might be cumbersome to create PDF document for the web. One can face problems like
the file being enormously heavy due to excessive fonts, images and forms that are not optimized. It also
has to be understood that optimizing PDF file for the web is done in order to enhance competency and
speed in retrieval, storage and execution. Optimizing PDF file will reduce its size tremendously, thus,
easing the functionality for you.
Now, that we have understood the vitality of PDF optimization, we can discuss all that it takes to create
small PDF files for the web. The factors that need to be taken into consideration to create PDF file are
the size of the fonts and images as well as their usage. We also need to know about the image type and
its resolution. Needless to say, the smaller the size of the file, the easier it is to optimize. Hence, reduce
the number of fonts and bitmapped images. In lieu of that you can use vector graphics. Vector-based
graphics are usually made in GIFs. These take up lesser space and yet display every pixel of your
image. However, you can compress vector-based data using ZIP compression to reduce the size even
more. Not using multimedia in your file also helps a lot to keep the file size small.
Besides, when you create PDFs for the web alone, you can choose the RGB (red, green, blue) color
model instead of the CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, key black) color scheme. For the simple reason
that RGB has one less data as compared to the latter, the file size is much smaller. But you get the
similar color effect. However, if color is not required in your format, then avoid using it. Use grayscale
images instead and see the difference in your file size. Once you have created the web-only file, you
need to click on 'File' and then 'Save As' and overwrite your existing PDF file. This option will remove
changes added on to PDF using the 'Save' command instead. It will also linearize the file for quick
web-viewing. Linearized pdf file allows the user to view the first page while the remaining file is
downloading in the background from the web.
