2. In Car Stereos: Choosing Speakers
We can’t all be audiophiles, but most of us want to be able to listen to music
when we’re in our cars. And, although we’re not good enough to pick up
all the subtleties of the music, we still know when our speakers are off.
However, given that we’re not experts, it can be difficult to work out
which speakers you need for your car. Here, we have provided you with a
guide to help you to choose the right in car speakers for your vehicle.

3. Size Matters
When it comes to choosing in car speakers, size matters. You need to choose
the correct size of speakers for your car. Unless you want to start cutting
holes in your car, or you want to go to the expense of getting a garage to
do this for you, you need to choose speakers that are the same size as the
ones you already have.
In general, car stereos are standardised. However, some of the more
expensive models of car do have bespoke speakers. They do this for
exclusivity, but also because, by doing this, they can make more money
out of you. Fortunately, most of us have standard cars, and so can find car
speakers at our local in car audio shops.

4. Power Matters
• In the audio world, when we talk about the size of the speaker, we also mean
power. We measure power in wattage. You need to choose the same wattage as
your original In Car Speakers. This is because the speakers will drain power from
the stereo, making it harder to listen to your music. When this happens, you will
need to buy an additional amplifier to deal with the added power. An amplifier
will need housing, so if you don’t have the space, you might have to start cutting
into the car again. To avoid this, simply choose speakers that have the same
wattage as the original speakers.
• To work out how much power the speakers can handle, you need to look at their
RMS rating. You will find this on the box (or in the description if buying speakers
online). The RMS is the amount of power that it can handle long term. For
instance, if you have an RMS of 1000. It means that the speakers can handle
1000watts of power all day long. Sure, it will be able to deal with higher wattage,
but only in short bursts. The 1000 RMS marking is like its shire horse setting: what
it can handle when played continuously.

5. Component Vs. Coaxial
Component speakers split up the various types of speaker across different
units. For instance, the tweeters and woofers are both separate units.
They enable a greater breadth of sound, but take up more room.
Coaxial speakers contain both the woofers and the tweeters. This means that
they are slightly less discerning than the component speakers, but they
take up less room.
Whether you choose a component or coaxial speaker depends on where you
are mounting the speakers and how much space you have.
