The Program
John Lawrence
B.Sc (Hons) M.Sc B.Com (Hons)
In a world of distinguished engineering professionals,
finding presenters who are leaders in their field is
paramount. John Lawrence fits the criteria as a
distinguished presenter, receiving excellent course reviews
over the past 15 years.
John was extensively associated with the Diamond and
Gold mining industries in Southern Africa, and has over 20
years experience as a project and departmental manager
for a multinational oil company. During this time, John
focused on designing and managing the infrastructure of
the telecommunications, data communications and IT
systems.
In the past 5 years, John has worked extensively for a
number of multi-national clients, managing projects
including facilities management, budgeting and financial
forecasting.
When John is not consulting or lecturing, he enjoys
increasing his own skills by reading and writing about state-
of-the-art technology topics and how to optimise Return On
Investment (ROI) for the overall IT infrastructure. John is a
dedicated professional who has trained engineers and
technicians around the world.
This workshop is designed for engineers and technicians who need practical, extensive knowledge
of the design and troubleshooting of Industrial Ethernet networks, as well as the selection,
installation, and configuration of components such as routers and switches.
This in-depth workshop deals with the underlying TCP/IP protocols, and specifically addresses both
design and configuration issues related to IPv4 and the more recent IPv6.
The workshop also covers the more advanced aspects and applications of Ethernet such as
advanced switching and routing, CCTV over IP, OPC and Modbus/TCP over Ethernet, industrial
security, intrinsically safe applications, switched rings (including the latest IEC 62439-3 redundant
ring standard), and highly-deterministic Ethernet-based field buses (e.g. for servo control) capable of
1 millisecond repetition rates and jitter of less than 1 microsecond.
Taking a practical, hands-on approach, whilst incorporating the use of real, industry specific
equipment, this IDC workshop will ensure that you effectively test and apply a the knowledge and
skills that you learn.
Pre-requisites: A basic working knowledge of Ethernet networks and IPv4 addressing will be
useful. Real-life experience with equipment and hands-on testing will enable the workshop to be
placed in context.
