The POV shot of the fist hitting Pip, is quite unexpected. He is stereotypically dressed, and is wearing leather glove which can give the impression of a ‘man that means business’.Some people that viewed this part of the film, people found quite comical, but the general idea is that he is lurking on a vulnerable, young girl.
These are our two main male protagonist, they both conform to the general idea of gangster thugs. Adam on the left has a shaved head, black top and a black leather jacket these three characteristics stereotypically lead you to think of a man you wouldn’t want to mess with. On the right, Edward looks Eastern European and is also donning black. Due to his look he appears threatening and confrontational.
Our victim, Pip is being carried into the torture room. The room is pretty stereotypical for thriller movies. Its in an isolated location, In a room designed to resemble a dark basement. There are tools hanging around and old boxes, it creates an eerie atmosphere and a chilling feel. This still frame is the beginning of the gripping build up of the torture scene.
The torture scene is becoming more and more gruesome and here we can see the hammer being positioned to smash Pip, our torture victims toes. In the sequence we view just before Pip’s toes are smashed followed by a wide shot of them getting hit, and her sharp out cry of pain, this gives it a really realistic touch. And it starts to become shocking to watch. As an audience we feel extreme sympathy for her but also at the same time, get a thrill. Just like the male protagonist, we are placed in their position and we enjoy watching it.
Edward is preparing to attack our torture victims knee, with a metal bar. We see the sadistic pleasure through voyeuristic eyes, which as an audience we enjoy, as shocking as it may be! The creative positioning of the lighting in this shot casts eerie shadows around the room adding to the fear of what is yet to come? It glues the audience to their seats almost looking forward to the next scare!
This is personally one of my favorite shots. I think its really captures Adam’s, one of our man male protagonist, threatening look. The light here really helps to create this cold hearted look.
Our main protagonist, Adam, is screaming, ‘Where is he?!’, we are shown the first clue why she is in this situation. The camera is angled looking up at Adam, therefore we feel inferior to him. Edward our other protagonist is in the background, and from this shot gives the impression that Adam is the main man.
This is a great action shot. Pip is being slapped and hit around the face. Again we are being voyeuristic in this shot. This part is quite uncomfortable to watch, but as an audience we enjoy to watch it. The camera is angled looking up to the male protagonist, this gives them a high statues.
We see the main male protagonist having fun, and enjoying what they are doing. As an audience we don’t want to enjoy what is going on but its hard not to. And again the camera is angled looking up at the male protagonists. In the sequence this is when the music starts, this brings a lighter tone into it, and as an audience we start not to feel as bad to enjoy what is going on.
