Singing sounds from trees and the movement of tree branches inspired few thoughts on complexity. The video embed makes easier to follow up on those thoughts. Using trees with leaves inside balls give rise to a complex system in which many pendulums are moving and yet we may hear sounds with rhythm and see neighboring leaves getting away from each other as they take different trajectories. The presentation offers a new setup idea for conducting brainstorming sessions, in emulation of trees.

  • Dear Vincenzo- I spent the past hour reading the references in cited in your last response. They make great readings. I suggest people read them first and then watch the inspiring videos. The game is really interesting and puzzling. next time I visit Italy, I have to watch the game live (may be participate).

    Your opinion of my presentation made me joyful. I am so glad it resonated with you. Fractals are poetic and presentations on complexity should also be poetic. This is one way to make people relaxed when reading about complexity.

    As it is always the case when I read your presentations, I liked it immensely! *You* are definitely a wonderful thinker and presenter! In your presentations there's not just wisdom, there is... poetry!

    Unpredictability, what an intriguing concept... you led me back to a paper I wrote some while ago about a deterministic game called 'Strappacuore'. The game is quite popular in Italy but not much abroad I think; thus I translated it into 'HeartQuake' -- a pun combining 'earthquake' and 'heart'. In fact when you play it at a fast pace you can feel that it gets into you and pulsations get higher...
    It's a nice 'game', but in fact it is not a game, as the procedure is decided the moment you divide the pack among the players (normally two). But the evolution of the game.... That is quite unpredictable! So you see we have a very simple procedure; something completely decided at start up time; and even there we have unpredictability!     In fact, several years afterwards, I found that the 3D graphs of the HeartQuake games are likely to have a fractal dimension... namely they *are* fractals! And those games also can be represented as musical sounds, as you mention in your presentation!     ...Indeed it looks like we are experiencing now one of those rippling effects you mentioned in your presentation!! :-)

    In fact this 'harmony' between minds producing ripples of thoughts leads me to yet another concept, namely that of Leibniz's harmony between substances -- namely between MINDS!     Your conclusions also are very much a combination of the wise and the poetic; they represent wonderful seeds that we should all turn into trees-of-love... I hope humanity will be able to reach sooner than later this level of collective awareness and intelligence; and indeed create a fractal society of minds -- a resilient and prosperous fractal social organization!

  • The idea of this presentation sprang up in my mind while standing nearby trees, which were dancing and singing with the wind
  • Idea are like trees they branch out and grow and suddenly they start dancing and whistling with the storms of brainstorming

  • Can we predict where the wind shall send the branches? Stop the video and try to guess where a selected branch will move to
  • Even for a second in the future this forecast will be difficult to prove correct
  • Now, listen to the rhythm of the singing trees Can you predict the next sound
  • Again, this prediction might be difficult even though you may notice some repeating pattern in the music.
  • A sound wave is the pattern of disturbance caused by the movement of energy traveling through a medium
  • As trees have fractal repeating patterns, so are sounds coming out of trees The orderly trees make sounds of repeating patterns Sound patterns coming out of the chaotic wind
  • We talk about the Butterfly Effect How about The Wind Effect?
  • A butterfly effect starts when a butterfly flips its wings A tree has many “wings” I mean branches
  • When trees flip their branches they whistle as well leading to maximized “Butterfly Effect”
  • Not only that as trees have built-in pendulums in their leaves’ structure Stalk (Rebiola) Leaf mass acting as ball
  • This way trees are composed of great number of pendulums moving with the wind together Out of their chaotic movements comes musical sounds
  • It is amazing how these “tree pendulums” figure out to “shout” with certain patterns
  • I wonder if this leads to a valid suggestion!
  • Why not hold brainstorming sessions in a tree-format structure so that “ideas patterns” may appear. A tree rippling effect emerges influencing leaf and tree surrounding it We need brainstorming sessions with rippling effects
  • Adjacent leaves go in different trajectories The wind ensures that two adjacent leaves in a complex system will eventually end up in very different positions after some time has elapsed. Watch the video again and see how true this is
  • A fractal is a never-ending pattern. Fractals are infinitely complex patterns that are self-similar across different scales. Do you feel the music coming from the trees in the video are ending? This is complexity in action
  • Small changes may cause big effects in trees Wax a tree leave and its behavior changes
  • Water on leaves
  • The drops of water magnifies the leaf and we discover that its structure is repeating A tree leaf teaches us that we live in infinity
  • So are the lessons from trees We may plant seeds of hate for a job, to give one example
  • So are the lessons from trees The seed grows into a tree with infinite possibilities
  • Always plant the seeds of gratitude and spread around the music of joy
