Introduction
In this task I had to do music video and pick song that I liked with
my group and make music video. My group and I picked waiting all
night by rudimental, its drum and bass song, and our target
audience is young people and mostly young women’s and people
that liked drum and bass music. Music video conventions that I used
lip-syncing, narratives performance, shot types, facial expressions,
editing in times to the music, fading visuals cross cutting and some
filters all these are important because to make a professional and
successful you need all these conventions.
Preproduction process
To make my music video successful I had to do a lot of research and
planning on different tasks, first I watched 4 different music videos
and saw everything they did wrong and right which helped me
prevent the mistakes I was about to make, I also watched what
codes and conventions they used and what went well for them and
what didn’t ,then I went on to research the different shot types and
the continuity editing they used, then I started listening to different
songs to understand how the song and the lyrics effects the
narrative, which helped me decide what song I wanted to do. Then
started researching about star constructions how most singers
performance represent themselves and what media interactive sites
they use.
I also used another research methods to help me with my music
video, the storyboard I had to make so I get a bit more
understanding about my music video and how I exactly wanted it to
be, and then we undertook other productions on the way, we did
filming schedule where we decided where wanted to film with my
group who’s doing what, and then we did the location ideas we
Google the best locations for drum and bass song and we find great
2. locations like Camden market and Hempstead park, then we went
on to do our costume ideas we all talked about what costume we
wanted our artist to wear casual clothing and more urban cloths
then anything else, because our artist was quite teenager and we
wanted her to be comfortable with the outfits.
We had to sit down as a group to discuss the song we wanted to pick
so, at first everyone had to get three songs and talk about why they
think its good idea for us to pick one of those songs and use it. We as
group all agreed to use rudimental waiting all night.
I undertook various preproduction tasks to help with the filming of
my music video such as filming in different locations and making my
narrative really interesting, my first narrative had scene at the bar
and parks, I wanted to film in dark road to give then impressions
that the song is sad and about someone waiting for someone else
and being alone.
My research planning was very effective because it helped me see
how I wanted my video to understand how to make successful
music video, and I knew exactly what to do when I finished my
research planning.
In my research and planning I could of improved how I used my
time because we spend lots of time filming the performances and
forgot about the narratives, we had to do all the narratives last
minutes, and they could been better if we had used our time wisely.
Review production process
What went well in the production process of my music video were
our performer and the locations we picked. The performer lip-
synced and the clothes she was wearing fitted very well with the
music video we got beautiful shots of different locations we used
different angles to capture different emotions of the performer we
used lots of tracking when the performer was walking to show that
3. she’s anger and sad we also used close up and extreme close up to
capture the emotions on her face and our performer was great
actress. We worked very well as group we definitely made sure
everyone had part and certain role to play and everyone played
their role, we discussed everything before doing everyone was
contributing and saying their opinion. We filmed so many different
shots and different footages just in case, and to have more options.
What didn’t go well was how we managed our time, we spend lots of
time filming performances and had to rush all the narratives w still
managed to get couple good shots but it could’ve been better. Also
the lighting was great we had many shots that we filmed in the dark
and we needed lighting and some shots was filmed in bad angle so
you couldn’t see the performer face that well.
My production log and my editing log went well because I was
posting every time I edit or film on to my blog explaining what I did
how I did.
I went through the music video so many times seeing all the
mistakes and try to correct them so it can look like professional.
Review the finished product
Compared my the original ideas my music video changed a lot, in
good way interims of the narrative it changed to for example I
wanted scenes in the bar and the park but we couldn’t do that, I kept
changing my mind through out the filming process because I was
realizing that those ideas wont good enough for professional video
and changing them straight away.
The conventions that I used in my music video was lip syncing and
making lyrics go with the narrative to make it more effective and
when the beat goes up we would make our performer dance to have
that feeling of drum and bass song, we also used fading visuals cross
4. cutting and varied costumes and for the locations we used
iconography to link it to the genre of the song.
Technical qualities
The music video definitely connects to the genre of the song, our
performer is young and very stylish she shows that throughout the
music video her sense of style really suits the song and every time
the beat drops are performer dances and jumps which links back to
the drum and bass song and all the shot types we took are effective
because she gives lots of emotions to the camera which looks real
and meaningful, she also does moves that suits the lyrics way she
moves and runs around while the camera is tracking her. The
feedbacks we most got where positive and everyone mostly talks
about emotions we put in the music video and the effect if had on
them.
