Wedding Ceremonies
by Do nald Baetz
T hroughout history, people’s weddings have been as much a ref lection of their cultural upbringing as much as
their religious belief s. Past generations of weddings were more closely structured by what cultural and religious
customs dictated. Today, weddings are certainly more f lexible and unique than what we once thought; wedding
tradition is of ten eschewed in f avor of the individual expression of the two people involved. Couples today can
personalize their weddings more than ever, with a myriad of options f or dif f erent event spaces, visuals and
design, catering and music.
Obviously, not every couple completely rejects the staples of a customary wedding, but today’s culture of
individualism has seen subversions of wedding traditions. T he couple’s choice of venue is perhaps the biggest
giveaway of their desires to turn wedding tradition on its side. Depending on the scale of the event, a
destination wedding can give provide a couple with much greater control over every aspect of the environment
on their special day.
Traditionally, a common spot f or a destination wedding is a beachf ront resort or tropical locale. But a
destination wedding isn’t necessarily all about crystal blue waters, sandy beaches, and lounging poolside.
When trying to deviate f rom the norm, some destination wedding-bound couples relish individualism and
uniqueness – perhaps to the point of strangeness. Interesting settings like baseball stadiums, aquariums,
scenic plantations, golf courses, and even zoos have all been host to weddings.
As wedding locales became more exotic, so too have brides and grooms sought out inventive new twists on
traditional wedding attire. Although some brides-to-be would balk at wearing anything but white, more and more
weddings see beautif ul colored gowns of rich, pale pink, vibrant yellow, or sometimes, even black. T he cut of
the dress can also be altered; brides these days can select f rom dresses of various lengths, and go shorter
than is the norm. T he classic look of a well-tailored suit is undeniable, but not every man wants to get married
in one; be it in a suit or tux, more and more men are opting f or baby blue, beige, khaki, navy or grey.
Couples have also been known to serve their guests dif f erent types of appetizers and main dishes that don’t
always f all in line with the norm. A nontraditional caterer, or do-it-yourself buf f et setup will go a long way in
helping your event stand out to your guests. Try a specif ic theme f or your appetizers, like a certain animal,
seaf ood, or country of origin; in addition, you could go the other direction and pass out cute and creative
f inger f oods like s’mores, “sliders”, and other small plates. For desert, of f er the guests at your reception a
choice of dif f erent sweets rather than relying on that old standby, plain wedding cake.
