- I am Ben Spain and I am taylor giffer and our project is ballistic missiles changing the course of any war.
- The use of Ballistic missiles is controversial. Many feel they are necessary for strictly defensive purposes. If used strategically they can make the difference between winning the war and losing a country. Opponents to ballistic missiles believe that they cause far too much unnecessary damage including civilian deaths. Today’s ballistic missiles though, are so incredibly accurate that the most modern could be aimed by a special form of laser light and hit targets as precise as the tip of a ball point pen.
- Ballistic missiles are missiles that reach sub-orbit. They were developed for two purposes, 1 as strategic weapons and 2 for space exploration. Our presentation will focus on the ballistic missile as a strategic weapons important to any countries arsenal. Ballistic missiles are useful weapons because they are very hard to detect and destroy. Ballistic missiles can be very mobile for their size or stationary depending on the type of missile. These missiles can be launched from air, speed, land, and ?space.
- The predecessors to today's ballistic missiles started in Ancient China. This particular rocket is the Chinese Fire Arrow developed around 904 & used in the war against gangues cong. Though it was not a ballistic missile, the Chinese Fire Arrow was the first rocket ever invented and without we would not have the ballistic missiles we have today. The Chinese Fire Arrow was an antipersonnel rocket and it had a black powder warhead which was used for fuel to launch. The fire arrow was first launched from a bow because the Chinese did not realize it cold propel itself. It was later launched from a stand.
- This form of rocket is a multi-stage, anti-personnel Hwacha invented by the Koreans in 1409. The Hwacha rockets that it fired were a form of Chinese Fire Arrow adapted by the Koreans. Though it had a better hit rate then its predecessor, the Hwacha still relied more on the power of numbers rather then accuracy, which still remained the Hwacha’s number one disadvantage.
- We’re jumping ahead a few centuries to the Goddard rocket (left) & Nazi V2 Rocket (right). The Goddard rocket was the first liquid fuel rocket. The Goddard rocket, which was named after it’s inventor Dr. Robert H. Goddard, was very different from our rockets today in the way that it’s propulsion came from the head of the craft rather than the tail. The V-2 was a ballistic missile with a range of up to 200 miles compared to the Hwacha and the Chinese Fire Arrows which just shot a few yards. The V2 was the second liquid fuel rocket. The first was invented by Dr. Robert H. Goddard whom we mentioned earlier, a German scientist and astronomer working under the command of Adolf Hitler, the Nazi extremist leader and leader of all Germany.
- This is the matador cruise missile. Some mistake these missiles for UAV’s or unmanned aerial vehicle, but even though it has no pilot and it does fly it is not a vehicle. Meaning it can not transport humans because it is a missile and will eventually detonate. It was the first cruise missile to be used by the U.S. air force or usaf.
- This is the Nike family it consists of the Ajax, Hercules, Zeus, and the X. Planning for Nike started near the ends of WWII when the US realized that normal AA Guns did not provide enough defense from newly invented German Jet Aircraft. The Nike missile was the world’s first successful widely deployed, guided SAM or surface-to-air missile. The first successful test firing of a Nike was in 1951. this missile was later named Ajax, it was a slender 2 stage liquid fuel rocket. It had a short range of 25 mi. it could reach 1600mph and could hit a target
